Road Closures Due To Flooding In Fremont, Omaha & Surrounding Areas 2019

My son didn’t make it to school yesterday, Thursday, March 14, 2019 because of road closures. He said for his own safety, he decided to turn around and go home. Today is a different story, he has 2 Midterm Exams: Biology and Psychology so he had to go. We were hoping that with the current flooding situation, the school might cancel and re-schedule the exam. Unfortunately, the school didn’t even though e-mails were sent to students that they might evacuate due to flooding.
To relieve the stress of exams and getting there, I volunteered to drive him there. We were ready with 2 cellphones fully charged, one that will direct us to routes to avoid on US Hwy 30 W closures and the other one as a back-up. We left at 9:30 to make sure he gets to his 11:00 class.
We decided to go with US-275 W route via Hwy 30 and Hwy 31 because it make sense rather than going to Blair or Fort Calhoun just to get to Highway 75 where parts were closed as well. We went as far as N 225th Street which was blocked, can’t get to N 230th. We ended up on a Dirt Road. The entrance didn’t looked bad but as we got farther away, it was bad. The area must have been flooded previously and dried out. It was like a driving into a crater. We can’t turn around because it was a narrow road with a long strip of deep holes on the sides where the water must have drained. Aside from that, the GPS didn’t recognize the area. I drove till I found a parking lot to turn around to and go back on the road. As we were getting out of there, other cars were also diverted in that area.
Every route suggested by GPS didn’t work. You can only go up to a certain point; you can't go all the way through. They were blocked by police cars. We chose another route – W Maple Road. Unfortunately, it was blocked as well. It looked more like a lake up ahead. We were on the road for an hour and a half - nowhere close to MidlandU so we decided to go home. Not only did we have to avoid road closures, we had to avoid potholes. With what we went through, it wasn’t worth the drive.

Minneapolis was destined to be a center of commerce due to its location at the Falls of St. Anthony, which was named by the French explorer Fr. Louis Hennepin in 1680. St. Anthony Falls is by far the largest source of water power on the Mississippi River. The falls were harnessed to power lumber mills in the 1840s and later for flour milling. By 1870, Minneapolis on the west bank and St. Anthony on the east bank formed the largest flour producing center in the world. In 1872, Minneapolis absorbed its older neighbor. Most of the old St Anthony township is now known as Northeast Minneapolis. A small part of the old township comprises most of the current suburb of St. Anthony
