Gais - Piccola Grande Italia

SWITZERLAND VLOG/Lost in a thunderstorm on top of a mountain?!
You are going to want to watch this vlog all the way through! We did sooo many exciting things in Switzerland. We got lost on a mountain and ended up hiking 5 hours in a thunderstorm, paraglided, rode bikes up to a small town on a beautiful day.
Switzerland literally was in our top 3 places on our Europe trip. I can easily say paragliding and then biking up to Lauterbrunnen was the BEST day of my life.
In this vlog we went to:
Interlaken
Gruyeres
Lucern
Mount Pilatus
Lauterbrunnen
Paragliding: Skywings Switzerland

Scottman895 Travel Delights: Bengal Spice (Holmfirth, England)
The United Kingdom is home to many great ethnic restaurants. Bengal Spice provides delicious Indian cuisine in Holmfirth, England. I head over to the restaurant and enjoy what the restaurant has to offer.
Aescher: Amazing Restaurant in the Swiss Alps
Watch my film of the Aescher Inn in the Swiss Alps right to the end and form your own opinion about this famous restaurant. The video will either convince you that you MUST see this place before you die, or that there’s NO chance of you being as comfortable as a mountain goat in such an environment!
What strikes you immediately about Aescher is its stunning location: ‘nestling’ under a 100m cliff, ‘tucked in’ to the mountainside, and ‘perched’ on a ledge above a long drop – this is the place for those who like to live life on the edge. On the other hand it’s quiet: all you can hear on the soundtrack are peaceful sounds of nature and my boots crunching on the path.
The movie takes you all around the vicinity of the inn, showing the various paths arriving at their goal, and also the terrace on the same ledge as the restaurant. I included plenty of shots of the 100m rock face above, because that’s one of the distinctive features of the Aescher’s location, as is the dramatic view down to the valley below.
Some of the things said about Aescher:
“the world’s most interesting restaurant”
“the destination of a lifetime”
“perhaps the most beautiful place in the world”
“mountain inn of the year, 2012” (the year it opened!)
Getting there (open May to November)
The ‘proper’ way to arrive is on foot, hiking up on one of four trails from Wasserauen, the terminus for the Alpenzeller train line. Aescher is at an altitude of 1454m (4,770 feet) so it’s going to take you three hours, but don’t worry: they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner all day, from 07.30 to 23.30.
If you are not able to undertake a three hour climb, then take the cable car up from Wasserauen to Ebenalp, then it’s just a fifteen minute walk on a paved path, though it is steep (you can see people arriving on this path towards the end of the film).
Unless you are in a party of ten or more, the restaurant will not reserve you a table: just turn up and wait your turn. There is a terrace with tables for fine weather. The menu is classic Swiss food: soups, cold meats, salads, sandwiches. A speciality is ‘rösti’ (potato fritters), with eggs and cheese. (But I don’t think the food is the point – their website hardly mentions it: it’s all about the location.)
Where to stay: The Aescher is a restaurant and it does not have rooms, so you will need to book somewhere else. If you want to stay on the mountain there are other guesthouses with accommodation within walking range – have a look at the Alpstein website.
Overtourism, Insta-hype and the Influencers……
What’s going on when a tourist attraction has 17,000 more visitors than the year before? When 105,000 visitors go to the same place in one summer? That’s what happened to Lake Cauma in Switzerland in 2017 – 2018. As a famous beauty spot, lots of people are going to check it out, but in the age of the internet and the digital camera they are not going to pass by without showing their friends and family what they are missing – probably via Instagram. And what will many of the ‘Instagrammed’ people do? Make a mental note to go look at it for real next summer, of course. Before then they will ‘share’ it with everyone they know too. The Swiss have a word for this exponential process: “Insta-hype”.
Switzerland is a relatively small country, and the beauty spots are well-known. Over-tourism is a real problem, as more people in the world become affluent: the more people who visit, the more they destroy the very experience they are seeking. The internet merely makes over-tourism happen more quickly. ‘Influencers’ are people with a lot of followers on Twitter or Facebook/Instagram, and some casual word from them can result in visitors flocking to a particular site. Naming somewhere the most “beautiful place in the world” could soon render it less beautiful, as more car parks have to be built and you start having to queue for the prime ‘selfie’ position!
So let’s finish this rant with a sad little story about the Berggasthaus Aescher: the couple who have owned the business for a long time are now having to give up because they can’t take the pressure of so many tourist visitors a day. New owners will take over next year. You might be thinking ‘Yes, I’ll bet they are crying all the way to the bank…’ But what if they liked their peaceful existence with less money but more beauty, before the influencers, Insta-hype and overtourism?
Argentina, Tierra del Fuego and its new electronic heaven
Argentina declared Tierra del Fuego a tax haven, so that the region can grow in population. Big electronics companies came to Tierra del Fuego and that changed the Argentinian town Ushuaia radically. What did the economy growth in Argentina bring to Tierra del Fuego and what are the electronic firms bringing to the inhabitants of the end of the world? What means this new development for the mountains and the nature in Tierra del Fuego?
Dutch presenter and film maker Stef Biemans travels across the back of the Andes and wonders how people are doing in South America. In the third episode he experiences life in Tierra del Fuego, that mostly is known for his amazing nature and that in the last years has also become a place where electronics are produced. How are people making a living here and what are they dreaming of in an area that is surrounded by emptiness?
Tierra del Fuego is the new migrant paradise of South America. Since the news has been circulating that at the southernmost tip of this continent you can easily get work in an Argentinian electronics factory, the capital Ushuaia has grown rapidly. The Argentine government has declared the area tax-free, as a result of which companies have launched large smartphone and television factories.
Growth is going so fast here, that it feels like a threat to many people. What, for example, are the consequences for nature in the mountains around it? Should not the biodiversity of Tierra del Fuego be left intact? Charles Darwin studied Man and Animal on Tierra del Fuego and found the principles of his theory of evolution. Can the inhabitants of today adapt to the changes? Or are they stuck in the past? And how bad is that?
