Hydra, Greece: Traffic-free Tranquility
More info about travel to Hydra: Only a 90-minute hydrofoil ride from bustling Athens, Hydra is the prettiest of the Greek isles. The community is an easy blend of work-a-day commerce, fancy yachts and lazy tourists meandering through traffic-free streets, alongside the occasional donkey.

Aegina, Poros & Hydra | 3 Greek Islands in 1 Day Cruise
Welcome on board to get to Aegina, Poros and Hydra islands, all three islands in one day!
Sail with me first to the biggest island on our journey in the Saronic Gulf, Aegina (in Greek: Αίγινα) island. We are going to stroll around the small beautiful harbour city, buy the world famous pistachios and see some cats by the animal protection station.
After a delicious buffet on board, we sail to Greek island-pair called Poros (in Greek: Πόρος). There, we are going to visit the famous landmark of the island, shop some local products from a boutique shop and have a walk around the harbour under the blue sky.
Last, we are going to visit Hydra (in Greek: Ύδρα) island. Hydra port is a picturesque crescent-shaped small harbour town where we are going to relax after a long day. Why? Because since by law, cars and motorcycles are not allowed on this Greek island. Mules, donkeys and water taxis provide public transportation in this island. So, we are walking around to see the breathtaking views and climb up to visit the statue of Andreas Miaoulis, admiral during the Greek War of Independence.
After a whole day on the sea and visiting three Greek islands in one day, it´s time to head back to Athens. But wait, not before we have a quick Greek traditional dance party on the cruise boat.

HYDRA GREECE - BEST ISLAND DAY TRIP from ATHENS - vlog
Wondering which island to visit on a day trip from Athens? Look no further than the beautiful island of Hydra.
From the Athens port of Piraeus, we take the ferry on an hour and a half journey across the Aegean Sea to Hydra, an island filled with history, beautiful ocean, narrow cobblestone alleyways, hilltop views, cats, al-fresco Greek dining, water sports, relaxation, and old movie charm.
Best of all, the island is traffic-free and does not have any cars.
Hydra is rich in history. We visit the island's historic Greek Orthodox churches, then venture to the top of the hills to capture the views.

A Tour of SYMI, GREECE | The Most Beautiful Greek Island?
Hydra, a Popular Day-Trip Destination from Athens
Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf. It is separated from the Peloponnese by narrow strip of water. In ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea, which was a reference to the springs on the island.
There is one main town, known simply as Hydra port. It consists of a crescent-shaped harbour, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals. Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. Most of the local residences, as well as the hostelries on the island are located on these streets.
Hydra is deservedly one of the most popular day-trip destinations from Athens. The port of Hydra has a scenic location in a deep harbor, with whitewashed houses rising on the hills on both sides from an azure blue sea. An enlightened policy of development has meant that there are absolutely zero high-rise houses, cars, or motor-bikes and while the main port boulevard is packed full of tourists in season, only a few minutes away are quiet back alleys with nary a soul, and many of those visitors are day trippers, leaving the town relatively peaceful by night.
All hydrofoils and catamarans dock at the center of the north side of the island at the eponymous port of Hydra. Practically everything of interest to the visitor is on the waterfront, in the few main streets behind the harbor, or along the main road that follows the coast or within a block or two of it. If you head west for about a kilometer, past a little headland, you'll reach the neighboring, far less touristy village of Kamini.

Hydra - Videos from Greece
Hydra is the most impressive island in the Argo Saronic Gulf. Due to its close distance to Athens, it gets very popular as a summer weekend destination. The town is constructed on the slopes of a hill around a port and impresses visitors at first sight with the elegant stone mansions. The special thing about Hydra island is that cars and other motor vehicles are entirely prohibited in all the island, so all transport is done on foot, by boat or riding the donkey. In fact, the donkeys are very characteristic figures of Hydra Greece. Beaches on the island are actually small coves with crystal water and green surroundings. Source: greeka.com
