— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

TOP 5 PLACES TO VISIT IN COLOMBIA | BEST CITIES IN COLOMBIA

Huffington Post:
The country of Colombia has seen a massive increase in tourism and travellers in the past 10 years making it one of the best, most affordable and exciting places in the world, to travel to.
The north of Colombia, on the north side of the arm which connects Colombia with Panama, is situated on the Caribbean. Here you will find cities and towns like Cartagena de Indias, as well as Santa Marta, Barranquilla and more. South of the Caribbean is lush jungle, temperate rainforest and the big cities of Medellin, Bucaramanga, and the capital of Bogota.
So, prior to your travels to Colombia, you need to learn which cities and towns to spend time in, and which you can avoid. Here, I run down my top 5 places, cities and towns to visit when you travel Colombia.
I advise you to watch the video of top 5 places to visit in colombia, and the best cities in Colombia, instead of reading the description as the video outlines and shows images and video clips of the places in Colombia that I have visited to give you an idea of what to expect when you visit.
Starting at my 5th favourite place in Colombia, Santa Fe de Antioquia just outside Medellin. Incredible Colombian town on the opposite side of the valley from the touristy Guatape, Santa Fe is a beautiful escape from the growing Colombian tourism.
Santa Fe de Antioquia:
Number 4, is the tiny town of Salento. Nestled in the hills of the Colombian coffee region, Salento is a sleepy, classic Colombian town that even though it is becoming more and more popular, it still remains a little town that functions around coffee production and tourists visiting the Cocora Valley.
Click below to see the video of my top 5 things to do in Salento, Colombia.
I also have a few videos of my time in Salento, and the Cocora Valley.
Salento, Colombia Coffee Tour:
Cocora Valley, Colombia:
Number 3, best place in Colombia, are the twin towns of Santa Marta, and Taganga. Seperated only by a small hill, the coastal city of Santa Marta and Taganga are twin towns. Santa Marta is a big city catering to all your needs, and Taganga is a sleepy fishing village which acts as a perfect escape from the busy city.
Tour of the city of Santa Marta.
Walking through Taganga, Colombia:
Number 2 and number 1, favourite place or city to go to in Colombia has come in as a tie. I could not decide between Cartagena and Medellin so they have tied for the number 1 spot. Cartagena is the definition of enchanting, where simply walking the tight cobblestone streets feels special, with the only downside being the humidity.
Cartagena, Colombia |
Medellin is one of the most fun, characterfilled cities I have ever visited and I have only good memories from there. The beautiful greenery spread throughout the valley, the fast paced way of life, happy people, and again, only one downside which is the fact that its not on the ocean.
Parque Lleras, Medellin, Colombia:
Those are my 5 favourite places to visit in Colombia. I hope this helps when selecting the locations where to travel in Colombia and remember to subscribe and go through my channel for more first hand videos of each of these places mentioned in this top 5 list.

Top 10 Best Places to Visit in Colombia !! Tourist Attractions in Colombia
Top 10 Best Places to Visit in Colombia !! Tourist Attractions in Colombia
Colombia has something that will please most travelers, from sandy beaches of the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, to the Andes Mountains and the Amazon rainforests. Its heritage reflects the culture of its indigenous peoples as well as the Spanish who began settling here in the early 15th century. A couple of decades or so ago, Colombia was not on the tourist map because it was not a safe place to visit. However, the government is working hard to change that image, making it safer for travelers to enjoy the many features Colombia offers. An overview of the best places to visit in Colombia:
10. Popayan
Popayan is one of Colombia’s most impressive colonial cities. Located in southwestern Colombia, it is sometimes called the “Ciudad Blanca” (White City) because its buildings are chalk-white. Founded in 1537, its mild climate in the Valle de Cauca quickly attracted wealthy Spanish families who built mansions, schools, churches and monasteries. The city is famous for its Maundy Thursday procession as well as its nightlife.
9. Medellin
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Medellín was considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, home to Colombia’s infamous cocaine cartel. But when drug lord Pablo Escobar was snuffed out in 1993, Medellín began to bury its troubled past and rebounded tremendously. These days, the increasing number of tourist who come here find an inviting, modern city with one of the country’s best climates.
8. San Andres y Providencia
San Andrés and Providencia Archipelago are two island groups that are located closer to Nicaragua than Colombia in the Caribbean. San Andres is the largest island, and also the capital. Providence Island was initially settled by English Puritans who used slave labor on their plantations and took up privateering. White sand beaches and palm trees are San Andres’ best features.
7. San Agustin
San Agustin is a laidback little town surrounded by awesome landscapes and the remains of a forgotten civilization. One of the most intriguing ancient sites in Colombia, the archeological park of San Agustin is home to more than 500 monoliths, statues, petroglyphs and sarcophagi. Most of the stone carvings at San Agustin were created between 100 A.D. and 1200 A.D. They include representations of human figures, smiling and sneering monsters as well as animals such as snakes, birds and jaguars.
6. Zona Cafetera
Travelers who love their java will definitely want to visit Zona
Cafetera (Eje Cafetero) where almost half of Colombia’s coffee crop is grown on the slopes of the Andes. Visitors can learn more about coffee at El Parque del Café, a park that has a botanical garden with coffee plants and an amusement park. The Zone has a gold museum featuring pre-Columbian artifacts.
5. San Gil
San Gil is an old colonial town in northeast Colombia. Founded by the Spanish in 1689, it was named the region’s tourism capital in 2004. The designation honors mainly the main outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, rafting and kayaking. Couch potatoes may enjoy a visit to the cathedral built in 1791
4. Villa de Leyva
Villa de Leyva may be a small town less than a four-hour drive from Bogota, but its Plaza Mayor is one of the biggest town squares in South America. At one time people were executed on this immense square, which is now used as a gathering place for celebrations and festivals, such as the onion beauty pageant.
3. Bogota
Bogota, sometimes referred to as “the Athens of South America”, was first settled by indigenous peoples, though the founding date is generally set at 1538 by a Spanish explorer. Today, the city is one of the largest cities in South America and Colombia’s capital. Once considered a place to avoid, Bogota has cleaned up its act and is fast becoming one of the best places to visit in Colombia.
2. Tayrona National Park
Tayrona National Park is a must-see place for travelers who enjoy nature and exploring old ruins. Located on the north Colombia coast, the park offers a variety of ecosystems, from swamps to scrublands to cloud forests. For many travelers, the park’s biggest attraction is its beaches, set in deep bays and shaded with coconut palms. In fact, Tayrona beaches are among Colombia’s most beautiful.
1. Cartagena
Cartagena is the bustling city where Kathleen Turner’s character Joan Wilder begins her Colombian adventures in Romancing the Stone. Hopefully, travelers will get their visits off to better starts, though the city is just as busy as when it was one of the key Caribbean ports from the 16th to 18th centuries. Fought over by various countries, Cartagena was one of the most heavily fortified cities in South America; these fortifications can still be seen today.

Colombia tourism & Vacation 2016 (HD)
Colombia tourism & Vacation 2016 - Colombia trips - Colombia travel guide 2016
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide
Colombia - Twice the size of France, and with a diversity of landscapes and cultures that would be hard to find even in countries five times its size, Colombia should by all rights be one of the world's top travel destinations.
Pick a climate, and it's yours—if you find the light jacket weather of Bogotá cold, drive an hour down through the mountains and sunbathe next to the pool of your rented hacienda. If you don't want to sit still, head off into the Amazon or any of the country's other many inland jungles, snow-capped volcanoes, rocky deserts, endless plains, lush valleys, coffee plantations, alpine lakes, deserted beaches.
For culture, intellectual Bogotá might lead the rest of Latin America in experimental theater, indie-rock, and just sheer volume of bookstores, but you could also get a completely alien education in an Amazonian malocca, or you could delve into the huge Latin music scene of salsa and cumbia, with the most exciting dance display being the enormous Carnival of Barranquilla.
For history, wander the narrow streets of South America's original capital in Bogotá, check out old Spanish colonial provincial retreats like Villa de Leyva, trek through the thick jungle-covered mountains of the northeast to the Lost City of the Tayrona Indians. Walk the walls of Cartagena's achingly beautiful old city, looking over the fortified ramparts upon which the colonial history of South America pivoted.
For nightlife, hot Cali is today's world capital of salsa, claiming that competitive distinction even over Colombia's other vibrant big city party scenes, which keep the music going long into the small hours of the morning.
For dining, you'll find everything from the ubiquitous cheap, delicious Colombian home-style meals to world-class upscale and modern culinary arts in the big cities, with cuisines from all corners of the world represented.
And for relaxing, there are gorgeous tropical beaches along Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts, but you can find even more laidback and peaceful retreats on the idyllic and unspoilt Caribbean island of Providencia.
The political violence has subsided substantially throughout the majority of the country and savvy travelers have already flocked here from around the world—come before everyone else catches on!
See in Colombia
==============
Much of Colombia is in the Andes, which means there is very nice mountainous scenery to be found. On the other hand, there are also nice beaches to be found in the lowlands. The altitude of some peaks mean that snow can be seen even though they lie in the tropics.
Do in Colombia
===============
There are a lot of things to do in Colombia, and you can find parties and celebrations wherever you go. Colombians especially love to dance, and if you don't know how, they'll happily teach you. Colombia is known for its exciting night life.
There are many groups and agencies offering eco-tourism and it is very usual to find trekking plans (locally named 'caminatas' or 'excursiones') on weekend; many groups (named 'caminantes') offers cheaper one day excursion, special trips (on long weekends or during periods of vacation time (January, Holy Week, July, August, October, December) to different places in the country. Some recommended groups based out of Bogotá are: Viajar y Vivir, Fundación Sal Si Puedes, Caminantes del Retorno; there are many other. Patianchos in Medellín; Rastros in Bucaramanga. They usually offer guidance and transportation to the place; on long trips include lodging and other services. The recommendation is asking if the guide has the official certification.
