El Salto de Cutivireni

This is a converted S8 video shot by myself in 1977 during the field works belonging to the Evaluation of the Hydro-Power Potential of Peru Project. None of the resources I found about this waterfall is mentioning the apparently man made hydraulic structures at the bottom of the main waterfall, as it can be seen in my video. This waterfall doesn't have a particularly large drainage, but there's no denying the falls are tall. Google Earth elevation profiles support the estimate of height as being 3000' (914m). We initially learned of the existence of this waterfall while researching the nearby Catarata Parijaro. We saw a photo of the entire series taken by Alejandro Balaguer. We think that 3000' (914m) is a wholly credible figure. In 2003, much of the land in the area (some of which was already protected under the auspices of Bosque Nacional del Apurímac or Apurímac National Forest) became part of Parque Nacional Otishi. This is due, in part, to protect striking natural features in the area, including the Pavirontsi Natural Bridge (the largest known natural bridge in the world), and several other magnificent regional waterfalls including Catarata Parijaro and Catarata Hectariato.

(Junín department): This is probably the most imposing waterfall to be found in Peru, a whopping 300-meter drop from top to bottom in the final foothills of the Vilca-bamba mountain range. The area, Cutivireni, is one of the last refuges of the Asháninka tribe. Getting there is neither easy nor cheap. The lack of roads means getting onboard a light plane in the city of Satipo. A 40-minute plane ride gives visitors the first glimpse of the massive waterfalls, which emerge from the jungleclad hills before thundering over a reddish semicircular cliff. Nearby lie the equally impres-sive Hectariato and Tres Hermanas. Should the more adventurous at heart get the idea of heading out there on foot, be warned: it is not for the faint at heart. Having landed at the Cutivireni airstrip, trekkers will need a native guide to take them on a full day's walk to the Sankatiaro refuge.The following day involves a tough climb up to the look-out point of Tonkare (heights in the Ashaninka language). Tonkare is a superb spot from where to gaze out over Parijaro, but to get to the bottom of the waterfall itself will need another full day's walk through dense jungle. In all, the expedition would need at least a week. From:
