The Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market is one of the most visited, most loved, and highly revered attractions. The Old City transforms into an outdoor market stretching for miles.
Filled with vendors selling everything from clothing, art, trinkets, and street food, the air is filled with the burning incense from the nearby temples as well as the beautiful aroma of charcoal burning cooking wonderful treats. If you’re in town for the weekend, you definitely need to check out the Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market.
Below is a description of the items I ate at the Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market:
Coconut Ice Cream – Made from coconut milk and coconut meat, this ice cream is actually quite light and refreshing. It is typically served with peanuts and a cherry on top.
Bael fruit – Also known as “wood apple,” this strange and exotic fruit makes a delightful juice that is extremely distinct tasting. If I had to describe the flavor, I would say it lies somewhere between a smokey apple (as its name implies), coconut essence, pandan leaves, and vanilla bean.
Fish Gill Soup – To be honest, this was actually quite tasty. It's not for the faint of heart, as it contains blood cubes (a common theme in Southeast Asian soups) and it is extremely fishy. The gills of the fish have an unusual loofah texture and the soup is filled with quail eggs. The soup itself is gelatinous and goopy, but has an overall decent flavor.
Blood Cockles – Also known as “blood clams,” these little shellfish snacks are quite yummy. Served with a spicy green chili sauce, these taste very much like expensive mussels. The texture is similar to a shiitake mushroom. Dubbed “15 most dangerous foods to eat” by MSN, make sure you have all your travel vaccinations if you are going to try this contentious seafood.
Sticky rice with Red Bean – Red beans, or adzuki beans are a popular ingredient in Southeast Asian desserts. It also just happens to be one of my favorite flavors in the world. The sticky rice is formed into a pan and then cut into many rectangle shapes which are covered in shredded coconut and sprinkled on top with palm sugar. This is a delicious snack and a great introduction to Thai sweets.
Miang Kham – An extremely exotic and refreshing treat in the hot weather of Chiang Mai. Miang Kham is actually a Northeastern Thai delicacy that is not commonly seen as a street food item. Betel nut leaves are filled with shredded coconut, lime, shrimp, ginger, peanuts, and fish sauce. The leaves are wrapped carefully into small triangular packages and skewered. When you bite into the leaf, there is a burst of flavor that is both sweet, sour, and shrimpy. Delish!
Thai Wine – It's not the very best wine I've ever had in my life, but it's definitely tasty and original. For roughly around $1 USD, you get a nice chilled glass of Thai wine. There are a couple flavors to choose from including strawberry, lychee, longan fruit, and ginseng. This wine vendor is only available at the Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market (so don’t miss it!)
Toddy palm fruit cakes – This dessert was my favorite food items I tried in Chiang Mai. Fluffy, spongey, light, bready cakes flavored with an orange palm fruit flesh make this a one-of-a-kind treat. The flavor of toddy palm fruit is nutty, buttery, caramelized, and smokey. It also just happens to be gluten-free (for any celiacs out there!)
Tapioca Noodles in Sweet Coconut Milk Drink (Lod Chong Nam Ka Ti) – This is a sweet, creamy, coconutty, and starchy drink that is best enjoyed chilled. If you like boba, you'll be a fan of this fun and exciting beverage. It is commonly sold by roadside vendors who serve it with giant sized straw for slurping up the colorful tapioca noodles swimming in sweet coconut milk.
Price: 10 baht to 30 baht range per item ($0.28 – 1.13 USD)
