THE RACK RAILWAY, A UNIQUE TRAIN !
The rack railway from Diakofto to Kalavryta, ''Odontotos'' in Greek, is one of the few rack trains in the world and a unique attraction for Greece: it was so named in Greek after the mechanism that such trains use in order to climb safely on steep slopes. For the longest part of the journey the train moves on conventional rails, yet, when the degree of slop exceeds 10% it moves on the rack rails, using suitable rack gears. The train crosses scenic areas of significant natural beauty and covers the 22 km journey at a speed of 30 to 40 km/h on conventional rail and 6 to 15 km/h on the rack rails.
A WONDERFUL JOURNEY
The rack railway connects Diakofto with Kalavryta, crossing one of the most beautiful scenries in Greece. Departing from the shores of the Corinthian golf, it crosses the Vouraikos Gorge, which forms
small and larger waterfalls. The train stops at Niamata, Triklia, and Kato Zachlorou, the latter being a convenient stop for visitors of the Mega Spilaion Monastery. From that point the trip continues for another 18 Klm, with a stop at the village of Kerpini before it reaches Kalavryta, its final destination.
Kalavryta and its greater area are a fascinating destination all year round, with noumerous villages with friendly inhabitants, unique landscapes, a rich history and important monuments like the Aghia Lavra Monastery where the Greek Revolution of 1821 began, as well as the site of the Holocaust of 1943, during the German occuration. Kalavryta is famous for its ski center, one of the largest in Greece and is also one of the few places in the world combining mountain skiing with swimming being very near to the sea at Diakofto.

TRAIN-SPOTTING AT ZACHLOROU, RACK RAILWAY
The morning sun rises over the line of Diakopto-Kalavrita rack railway and the first train travells into the gorge. After train-spotting deep into Vouraikos canyon during the morning, we spent the afternoon under the shadow of Zachlorou trees. The magic little village of Zachlorou located next to the river Vouraikos is the best place for a tired train-spotter to rest. The relaxing sound of the river, the wind rise the trees and the train passing close to the houses worth the trip from Athens.

Driving to Elati and Libovisi (Kolokotronis' home - mountain road driving, Greece) - onboard camera
Driving to Libovisi (the place where Kolokotronis grew up and where his family home is placed) with a Mitsubishi Lancer 1.5L Invite sedan. The video starts at the junction of Greek National Road 33 (GR-33) with Greek National Road 74 (GR-74), continues on GR-74, passes through the villages of Pyrgaki and Elati and comes to an end at Libovisi. From 19:50 mark of the video the road passes through a thick forest of fir trees that contiues till the end of the video. The type of vegetation changes near Libovisi where the altitude is lower than Elati.
A few words about Theodoros Kolokotronis:
Theodoros Kolokotronis (Greek: Θεόδωρος Κολοκοτρώνης) (3 April 1770 -- 4 February 1843) was a Greek Field Marshal and the pre-eminent leader of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.
Kolokotronis' greatest success was the defeat of the Ottoman army under Mahmud Dramali Pasha at the Battle of Dervenakia in 1822. In 1825, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Greek forces in the Peloponnese. Today, Kolokotronis ranks among the most revered of the protagonists of the War of Independence.
