Visit Macedonia - Serres Prefecture
The prefecture of Serres is one of the 13 prefectures of Macedonia, the largest province of Greece in size and wealth. The prefecture stretches from Strymonikos bay in the south, to the Greek-Bulgarian border to the north. It borders with the Prefectures of Drama and Kavala in the east and the prefectures of Thessaloniki and Kilkis in the west. It is one of the flattest Prefectures in Greece, considering that 48% of its total stretching is described as semi-flat mountainous, and is surrounded by the mountains of Kerkini- Vertiskos- Kerdylia in the West and Orvilos- Menikio- Paggeo in the the east. The Strymon river, starting in Bulgaria and ending into the Strymonikos bay (Orphanos bay as it was called in the past), flows north- south through the prefecture. Its main tributary is Aggitis, in the Eastern part of the Prefecture. The total population of the prefecture, according to the 1981 census, was 196,247 people, 2% of the population of Greece.

Serres Prefecture
Stretching from the Strymonikos bay to the Bulgarian border, the Prefecture of Serres is Greece's treasured possession. The destination combines the beauty of nature, the peaceful life of province and the cultural tradition in a way like no other. Surrounded by mountains and known as the flattest area in Greece, the region owes the fertility and beauty of its inland areas to the old waters of the river Strymonas. Northwest of the flat area lies the artificial lake Kerkini, constructed to dam the Strymon River and harness its energy.
The region of Serres offers the opportunity to discover, beyond the authenticity of provincial life, the hospitality, the local cultural heritage, and the historical monuments. A must do experience is touring the villages. To see traditional fire dancing head to Agia Eleni, for magnificent caves and impressive canyons as well as archeological remains of the ancient cities visit Alistrati and Amfipoli.

Macedonia today is a geographical region of Greece, and the largest of the Greek territory.
It constitutes most of the geographic and historical region of ancient Macedon, a Greek kingdom ruled by the Argeads whose most celebrated members were Alexander the Great and his father Philip II.
In 336 B.C., Alexander the Great became the leader of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. By the time he died 13 years later, Alexander had built an empire that stretched from Greece all the way to India. That brief but thorough empire-building campaign changed the world: It spread Greek ideas and culture from the Eastern Mediterranean to Asia. Historians call this era the Hellenistic period.
The name Macedonia was later applied to identify various administrative areas in the Roman and Byzantine Empires with widely differing borders.

Thessaloniki is the largest and largest city of Macedonia in northern Greece, and the second largest in the country, after the capital Athens. It is the seat of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the capital of Regional Unity of Thessaloniki, as well as the headquarters of the Region of Central Macedonia and the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia - Thrace.
We started our walk from Aristotelous Square to the most famous square in the city. We are looking forward to the temple of Saint Demetrius, who is a Polychous of Thessalonica. We take a bicycle ride on the beach by passing through the famous umbrellas of the beach from the statue of Alexander the Great and from the White Tower where we are going up to see the view from above. We also take a boat trip to the thermal of Thermia! !!!
Kastoria - A city in northern Greece in the region of West Macedonia
Kastoria is a city in northern Greece in the region of West Macedonia. It is the capital of Kastoria regional unit. It is situated on a promontory on the western shore of Lake Orestiada, in a valley surrounded by limestone mountains. The town is known for its many Byzantine churches, Ottoman-era domestic architecture, fur clothing industry, and trout.
Name
The name Kastoria first appears at the end of the 10th century, though a town existed on the site since at least the sixth century. There are several theories about the origin of the name Kastoria. The dominant of these is that the name derives from the Greek word κάστορας (kástoras, meaning beaver). Trade in the animal's fur, sourced from nearby Lake Orestiada, has traditionally been an important element of the city's economy. Other theories propose that the name derives from the Greek word κάστρο (kástro, meaning castle; from the Latin word castra) or from the mythical hero Κάστωρ (Kástōr), who may have been honoured in the area. The word is sometimes written with a C, Castoria, especially in older works.

Voluntary a National Park in Greece
Hi !!
I am Bony, a 23 years old french girl and I was volunteer in Greece last year. I did an 11 months European Voluntary Service in a little Greek village named Dadia, that is 10 km from the Turkish border. I was working with the NGO WWF (World Wildlife Fund) that monitor birds there (especially vultures), in the Dadia's National Park. My main activities were to stay into the forest during 6 or 12 hours, watching (count, observe behaviors...) birds with binoculars or telescope, or to help workers to do others various tasks.
I arrived there without any knowledges about birds and this year was really interesting for me ! It made me change a lot, in the good way !! Moreover, I learnt so much !! I was integrated into different cultures (Greek and Turkish), I improved my language skills and I met so much great people !!!
About the video, I realized it in Greece, with french friends that came one week to visit me during my service. I made it to present EVS program to Greek students from universities of my Greek area.
I think that, to open our minds to different countries, to travel, to live with customs of other countries, is the best way to live in the real actual world and to evolve !!

Skra is located only 4km away from the boarders of FYROM and extends over the NE slopes of Paiko mountain at an altitude of 520 m. Its former name was Lioumnitsa, while its present name was taken from the nearby mountain top Skra di Legen where the homonym battle (Skra-Ravine) took place during the First World War. This battle was of great importance for the course of Greek State and the First World War.
With its characteristic proud old plane tree in the center of the village, Skra is considered to be a place of celebration in honor of the homonym battle, while every year on 17th of May a memorial ceremony for the officers and the soldiers of that battles belonging to the so called Greek Division of Crete and Archipelago is held at the Monument to those who died in 1918.
Since May 2002, the Museum of the First World War- Skra Battle has been operating in Skra, housed in a specially constructed area. The Museum exhibition presents relics, photos and historic documents from the Macedonian battles of the First World War, as well as from the victorious Skra battle. The well known victorious battle took place on May 17, 1918.

Thessalonike - Macedonian City
Thessalonike - Macedonian City (Not Solun)
Inscribed base of a statue of Thessaloniki, of the 2nd c. A.D., found in the area of the ancient Agora and part of a group of statues of the family of Alexander the Great.
Inscription:
ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗΝ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑΝ
Inscription reading
To Queen Thessalonike, (Daughter) of Philip.
Archaeological Museum.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The city was founded around 315 BC
by the King Cassander of Macedon, on or near the site of the ancient town of Therma and 26 other local villages. He named it after his wife Thessalonike, a half-sister of Alexander the Great and princess of Macedon as daughter of Philip II.
Under the kingdom of Macedon the city retained its own autonomy and parliament and evolved to become the most important city in Macedon.

The Classical world came to Afghanistan with Alexander the Great, between 329 bc and 327, he conquered the area before moving into India, but he left behind him settlers, cities that he found it, and of course being Greeks they express their culture. The Greek legacy is so strong because the art so divine beautiful. The legacy of Greek art reach in Afghanistan by sea on every land and came up into places that Alexander formerly ruled.

Donald Kagan - Yale university
Quote:
We know the Macedonians were fundamentally Greeks. That is to say they were Greek speakers and ethnically they were Greek.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
George Cawkwell - Oxford university
Quote:
The Macedonians were Greeks, their language was Greek.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Historians refer to this enlarged Greek society as the Hellenistic world. At the start of his reign, the 20 year old Alexander was the crowned King of only Macedon - a crude Greek nation of north-east mainland Greece. His mother Olympias came from the ruling clan of the north-western Greek region of Epirus.
[David Sacks (1995), 'A Dictionary of the Ancient Greek World',
Oxford University]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As members of the Greek race, and speakers of the Greek language, the ancient Macedonians shared the ability to initiate ideas and create political forms.
[N G L Hammond, Professor of Greek / Fellow of the British Academy]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The latest archaeological evidence now confirms that [ancient] Macedonia was named after a Greek speaking tribe of people called the 'Makednoi', meaning in Greek highlanders' from the Greek 'macos' meaning tall, high, or long. Their local dialect of north-western Greek was later replaced by Attic Greek.
[Roger Wilson, 'Encyclopaedia of Ancient Greece']
------------------------------------------------------------------------
What language did the Macedonians speak?
The name itself is Greek in root and ethnic termination. It means 'highlander' and is comparable to Greek tribal names such as 'Orestai' and 'Oretai' meaning 'mountain-men'. A reputedly earlier variant, 'maketai' has the same root, which means 'high' is in the Greek adjective 'makednos' or the noun 'mekos'.
[N G L Hammond, 'The Macedonian State']
----------------------------------------------------------------
Alexander was not the first Greek to recieve divine honours in his lifetime, but the precedents were very few, and of course, inevitably inexact.
('The Greeks Crucible of Civilisation', Ch. 15, p. 228)
[Paul Cartledge, Professor of Greek, Cambridge University]
------------------------------------------------------------------
He [Alexander] achieved what no other Greek leader had accomplished, in uniting all the individual city-states into one [Greek] nation.
[John Guy, 'Greek Life', p.22]
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hesiod first mentioned 'Makedon', the eponym of the people and the country, as a son of Zeus,a grandson of Deukalion, and so a first cousin of Aeolus, Dorus, and Xuthus; in other words he considered the 'Makedones' to be an outlying branch of the Greek-speaking tribes, with a distinctive dialect of their own, 'Macedonian'.
[N.G.L.Hammond, Oxford Classical Dictionary, 3rd ed. (1996),pp.904,905]
-----------------------------------------------------------
Ancient Macedonia was - and still is - a territory of northern Greece,
the ancient Macedonians were of Greek origin and spoke a broader rougher dialect of Greek.
