Kagoshima, a seaside city on Japan's Kyushu Island, is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture. It's best known for Sakurajima, an active volcano that faces Kinko Bay. Kagoshima has warm summers (Jun–Sep), cool winters (Dec–Mar) and year-round rain. Popular times to visit are May–Aug. The city is home to festivals like the Umbrella Burning Festival (Jul); the Summer Lantern Festival (Jul), when paper lanterns are offered at a Shinto shrine; and the Ohara Festival (Nov), featuring a parade with traditional dance performances. The Kagoshima Cup, an international regatta, is held in Jul.

Living in the Shadows of a Volcano
Kagoshima City is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Kagoshima Prefecture and is a castle town dating back to the 14th century. The city and its suburbs are located on the northeastern part of Satsuma Peninsula and face the Kagoshima Bay, which is more commonly known as Kinko Bay.
The smoking Sakurajima centered in Kinko Bay is one of the main symbols of Kagoshima Prefecture. Throughout history Sakurajima (4 km from central Kagoshima City) has been the site of multiple massive eruptions and continues to be one of the most well-known active volcanos in the world. Sakurajima was originally an isolated island however, as a result of the eruption of 1914, the island was joined to the adjacent Osumi Peninsula. The leva fields can still be seen on the island as testament to the history of the volcano's eruptions. - Japan Tourism

Sakurajima is the symbol of Kagoshima, Japan.
It erupts almost every day!
Under the foot of this active volcano, many famous people have changed the history of Japan. Those people include Mt. Takamori Saito, Mr. Toshimichi Okubo, Mr. Tatewaki Komatsu, Princess Atsu-Hime and Lord Nariakira Shimazu.
(Where is Sakurajima?)
Sakurajima is located in the center of Kagoshima.
It is located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay and at the south of Kyushu Island, Japan.
You can go to the Sakurajima from Kagoshima City by ferry. You can have delicious Japanese Udon nooles on the ferry.
Sakurajima is connected to the Osumi Peninsula and you can go to the Sakurajima from the Peninsula (Tarumizu City) by car.
(Brief Explanation)
Sakurajima is an active volcano. Minor eruption occurs almost every day.
Sometime massive eruption takes places, but there have not been the lost of human life in the past decades. So, please be relaxed and come to Kagoshima!
It has an elevation of 1,117 meters and a circumference of about 50 kilometers.
(Sighseeing Sakurajima)
There is a Nagisa Park near the Sakurajima Port. There, you can take free foot bath and enjoy wonderful view of Kagoshima City and Kinko Bay.
I also recommend you to have Sakurajima small oranges. It is very sweet and delicious!
You can have go to the Yunoura Observatory Platform. It is the 5th station of Sakurajima

Kagoshima City is very closed to the Sakurajima.
Are city people safe in such a close distance from the active volcano?
If the wind flows from east, volcanic ashes fall on Kagoshima City.
The ash causes my eyes ache. I cannot go out without a mask covering my mouth.
I cannot wash my hair easily due to ash.
If ash is much amount, it is hard to drive a car because you cannot see in front of you. If wiper moves fast, it can damages windshield of the car. Please be careful!
Many Japanese children made the sandy mountain with my friends, but I collected ash at the garden and made many ASH mountains in my childfood
(History of the Island)
The most powerful eruption happened in 1914.
Sakurajima was an island, but the much lava sprang up at the time and the Sakurajima was connected to the Osumi Peninsula.
Much ashes fell on Kagoshima City and the sky was not visible for several days.
There is Kurokami Shrine on Sakurajima. The eruption buried an half part of the shrine gate with ash.

Beautiful View of Kagoshima Bay, Japan (2015/08/02 13:20)
I took the video on the beach of Uminoeki Hirakawa, Kagoshima City, Japan. You can enjoy eating various taste of seafood while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
I had a very delicious Tuna Donburi (Bowl) at the place.
It takes about 30 minutes by car from Kagoshima Chuo Station.

You can have a great view of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay (Kinko Bay).
Please get taste of tropical feelings while enjoy the spectacle view.
My personal recommendation is to take a foot bath for free.

There are various kinds of restaurants here.

Barbecue (baked beef and pork)
Green tea ice cream
Coffee restaurant
Japanese Izakaya bar
Western style restaurants
You can also taste traditional Kagoshima foods such as Keihan (Chicken soup rice with eggs and pickles) and Kurobuta (pork of Kagoshima traditional black pigs).

There are also convenience store and glossary stores.
Many families and couples come here to enjoy shopping on weekends.
ACCESS
Please take a tram and get off Izuro station.
Then walk toward sea. Tram fare is about 160 yen.
It takes about 10 minutes from Tenmonkan Street by foot.
It takes about 10 minutes from Kagoshima-Chuo Station by a car.
