Nature Notes from the Veluwe, Holland #03
In the southern part of the Veluwe we find the valleys that have been there since the last ice age. Here the soil mainly consists of moraines, sand and loam.
The meandering valleys have been formed due to the fact that, in the ice age, the surface water could not sink into the soil.
The national park Veluwezoom consists for 25% of heath land, and for 70% of forests.
The heath land is a source for concern for the park management. Icelandic horses graze in the southern part of the area, they keep the grass short, so that the heath gets the chance to spring and grow again.
The visitors' centre of the Organisation for the Conservation of Nature Reserves has as its motto looking inside to have a better view outside. With the basic information from the centre in hand, a whole new world opens up. If you are lucky, your path is crossed by that of a fox or a boar. But, let's be honest: it is not that easy.
Observing wildlife in the area can best be done at dawn or dusk. The fox hunts at night and in the twilight. In spring, when they have young, you may be lucky and see the young foxes play near their den.
An encounter with a wild boar is easier. Each day, they run from here to there and back again. December is the mating season, and the young boar are born in February.

Maarssen & Doornburgh Estate, The Netherlands
Beautiful Holland: Picturesque Maarssen and a beautiful estate with associated park: Outdoor place Doornburgh
The snow from yesterday, Saturday 11 February, gave some great photo moments.
Maarssen is richly endowed with its river Vecht and the many outdoor places.
One is the 17e-century Estate Doornburgh located along the River Vecht. The House is, together with the surrounding park, the access gates, a Carpenter's home, a Coach House and a Icehouse, recognized as national monument.
Since 1957 Doornburgh is in possession of Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchers. In 1964 they requested Jan de Jong to design new Monastery complex, the Priory Emmaus, the building was inaugurated in 1966. Since then, the country house in use as guests House of the Priory. In 2013 the new monastery complex was proposed as a national monument in the framework of various important works from the Reconstruction.
Because the number of sisters has declined strongly, the continuation of the monastery became impossible.
That is why the beautiful estate was sold in January 2016 to a real estate company and the monastery will be closed.
Chatter is it will become some kind of museum of the Priory and the House would be transformed into a partly protected housing for the elderly. But a final destination is known.
It is a beautiful Estate and I can certainly recommend to stroll through the park before it might not be possible anymore in the future

Mooi Stichtse Vecht: Pittoresk Maarssen en een prachtig stukje landgoed met bijbehorend park: Buitenplaats Doornburgh
De sneeuw van gisteren, zaterdag 11 februari, zorgde voor mooie foto momenten.
Maarssen is rijk bedeeld met zijn rivier de Vecht en de vele buitenplaatsen.
Een daarvan is de aan de Vecht gelegen 17e-eeuwse Buitenplaats Doornburgh. Het huis is tezamen met onder meer het eromheen gelegen park, de toegangshekken, een timmermanswoning, een koetshuis en een ijskelder erkend als rijksmonument.
Sinds 1957 is Doornburgh in bezit van Kanunnikessen van het Heilig Graf. Deze lieten in 1964 een door Jan de Jong ontworpen nieuw kloostercomplex, de Priorij Emmaus, bouwen dat in 1966 werd ingewijd. Sindsdien is het landhuis in gebruik als gastenhuis van de priorij. In 2013 werd het nieuwe kloostercomplex voorgedragen als rijksmonument in het kader van diverse belangrijk geachte werken uit de Wederopbouw.
Omdat het aantal zusters sterk is afgenomen werd het voortzetten van klooster onmogelijk.
Daarom is het mooie landgoed in januari 2016 verkocht aan een vastgoedbedrijf en zal het klooster gesloten worden.
Er wordt over gesproken om van de Priorij een soort museum te maken en het buitenhuis Doornburgh zou gedeeltelijk omgebouwd worden tot een beschermd wonen voor ouderen. Maar een definitieve bestemming is nog bekend.
Het is een schitterend stukje landgoed en ik kan zeker aanraden om door het park te lopen voordat het misschien in de toekomst niet meer mogelijk is.
Netherlands Overijssel Deventer Walstraat bekend van Dickens festival Nederland Deventer
Walstraat in Deventer is a street in the old town center of Deventer. Walstraat is part of the Bergkwartier. Walstraat is a street full of energy.
Every year several activities organized by residents and shopkeepers of Walstraat in cooperation with the local tourist office. The well-known Dickens Festival, and the cozy Walstraatdag Flea markets are good examples.
THE HISTORY
Deventer formerly protected in any way against potential intruders. The enemy is far from the city and citizens to keep ditches were dug and walls, walls (elongated accumulations of soil) and solid gates constructed or built. From that state of defense was also dating from 1458 Walstraat. The street behind a stone rampart was constructed and it owes its name. Behind the stone rampart was formerly a canal, which was subsequently dried. When the shore as a defensive structure was no longer needed and they have had more trouble than convenience, it was decided to break the stone shore.

De Walstraat in Deventer is een straat in het oude stadshart van Deventer. De Walstraat is onderdeel van het Bergkwartier.
De Walstraat is een straat die bruist van energie. Ieder jaar worden meerdere activiteiten georganiseerd door bewoners en winkeliers van de Walstraat in samenwerking met de plaatselijke VVV.
Het welbekende Dickens Festijn, De Walstraatdag en gezellige Brocante markten zijn daar goede voorbeelden van.
DE GESCHIEDENIS
Deventer beschermde zich vroeger op alle mogelijke manieren tegen eventuele indringers.
Om de vijand verre van de stad en burgerij te houden werden grachten gegraven en muren, wallen (langgerekte ophopingen van grond) en stevige poorten aangelegd of gebouwd.
Van die staat van verdediging maakte ook de uit 1458 daterende Walstraat, verbindingsweg tussen Brink en Bergkerkplein, deel uit.
De straat werd achter een stenen wal aangelegd en dankt daar haar naam aan. Achter die stenen wal lag vroeger een gracht, die later droogviel.
Toen de wal als verdedigingswerk niet meer nodig was en men er meer last dan gemak van had, werd besloten de stenen wal af te breken.

Viewing A Conjunction of Jupiter, Venus and the Moon in Tracy, CA (August 23, 2014)
In this video, it shows basically photos of my mini, early morning outing to Tracy, CA to see a spectacular triangular conjunction of Jupiter, Venus and the thin crescent moon around dawn. It was a solo, last minute trip. I had planned to view the conjunction at home but thanks to the morning low clouds lingering, I had no choice but to do a great escape from the clouds and headed northeastward into the Central Valley. This was a rare conjunction so I was determined to go! I had left home around 4:30ish a.m. It was still dark. I tried to head to the nearest Central Valley city ASAP before sunrise. Thankfully, there was no traffic along the way. While around Livermore, I saw a heavy backup traffic on the westbound side while along I-580. Luckily it was still clear eastbound. Once on top of Altamont Pass, the fog and low clouds had finally cleared dramatically and right when I was headed downhill along the pass (where we would see the Central Valley horizon during the day), I saw the conjunction!! I tried to take pics while driving but it was scary so I just headed quickly to my final viewing point, which was along the Mountain House Pkwy, located around the western edge of Tracy, CA. I parked on the side and finally set up my camera and snapped away and then simply enjoyed the conjunction slowly rise higher and higher until the break of dawn. After satisfying my eyes, I headed in the car and updated my situation with mom so she won't worry lol. I chilled a bit in the car and waited then for the sunrise. After sunrise, I finally headed back home. It was a smooth drive all the way back home with no traffic. What an interesting morning I had indeed!
The three brightest objects in the night sky were set to create a spectacular cosmic triangle this early morning of Saturday, August 23, 2014. Weather permitting, early skywatchers were able to catch the celestial display. During the past couple weeks, observers have been treated to a twilight tango between Venus and Jupiter. They had even approached each other and had passed extremely close to each other on August 18. Venus and Jupiter were now starting to go their separate ways after their spectacular mid-August encounter. On Saturday (Aug 23), the twilight tango turned into a trio as Earth's moon, got involved in this eye-catching celestial scene. A slender crescent moon had positioned about 5 degrees to the lower right of Jupiter. Venus was about 5 degrees below and to the left of Jupiter and nearly 10 degrees to the left (east) of the slender moon. The trio resembled an isosceles triangle, with Jupiter as the tip. This Saturday was one of the last chances to see Venus in all its glory. The planet was soon ending its brilliant morning appearance, which started in late January. The planet was still easy to spot below Jupiter, but after mid-September, it was to rise only about 30 minutes before sunrise. Jupiter would be climbing progressively higher with each passing morning and will become more and more prominent in the predawn sky. But on Saturday morning, about 45 minutes before sunrise, low in the east-northeast sky, Jupiter was sharing the billing with Venus and the moon. These three brightest objects of the night had called everyone's attention to the eastern sky as the dawn twilight advanced. This particular conjunction was one of the uncommon types. The conjunction of Venus and Jupiter in this part of the sky only happens once every 12 years. That being said, I hope you guys had a chance to view this triangular conjunction of these 3 heavenly bodies!
