Los Glaciares National Park is a federal protected area in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina.
The park covers an area of 726,927 ha, making it the largest national park in the country.
Established on 11 May 1937, it hosts a representative sample of Magellanic subpolar forest and west Patagonian steppe biodiversity in good state of conservation.
In 1981, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The park's name refers to the giant ice cap in the Andes, the largest outside of Antarctica and Greenland, feeding 47 large glaciers, of which 13 flow towards the Atlantic Ocean.
In other parts of the world, glaciers start at a height of at least 2,500 m above mean sea level,
but due to the size of the ice cap, these glaciers begin at only 1,500 m, sliding down to 200 m.
Los Glaciares borders Torres del Paine National Park to the south in Chilean territory.
The park has a cool and moist temperate climate. Mean temperatures range from 0.6 °C in winter to 13.4 °C in summer
although at higher altitudes, the mean annual temperature can be around −3 °C.
The park receives an average annual rainfall of 500 mm in the west and 900 mm in the east which is evenly distributed throughout the year. Snowfall is common during the colder months.
The mountains hold most of the humidity from the Pacific Ocean, letting through only the ice coldness
and creating the arid Patagonian steppe on the Argentine side of the range.
This area is habitat for guanaco, cougar, and South American gray fox, the latter of which has suffered from the invasion of the cattle industry and are endangered.
The guanaco, while not endangered, has had a dramatic decline in historic population due to large scale grazing of livestock throughout much of Patagonia.
There are over 100 species of birds in the area (condors, eagles, and others).
Between the ice and the Patagonian steppe there is a fertile area of
Magellanic subpolar forests composed mainly of lengas and guindos, but also ñires.
Within these more hospitable areas also live huemul deer and torrent duck.

El Calafate is located at Lago Argentino and is famous for the Perito Moreno glacier which is nearby. With its unique layout facing a peninsula you can get some of the most spectacular glacial views in the world. Several terraces have been built to provide several angles and to get up close.
We ourselves took a cab to the National Park Los Glaciares to have as much time as possible to take pictures, film and watch ice collapse from the front of the Perito Moreno Glacier.
This part of the trip was executed within 2 days and this is what we saw:

In Patagonia, there are plenty of unique and delicious things to eat. As in all of Argentina, beef is important, but particular to the area is the cordero, lamb, which is of a very unique flavor (supposedly because the Patagonian lamb eats a unique mixture of herbs found only in Patagonia) especially when grilled in the typical parrilla (grill).
Dulce de leche, similar to caramel and made by adding sugar to milk and cooking it, is used on nearly all desserts, including facturas (pastries eaten for breakfast or tea, or to accompany mate, filled with dulce de leche, dulce de membrillo, crema pastelera, roquefort, or many other things), alfajores (traditional cookies that consist of tiny biscuits stuck together), and many other Argentine desserts.

10. Mar del Plata
Once a retreat for Argentina’s aristocracy, Mar del Plata today is the country’s top beach resort city. Located on the Atlantic Coast in the Buenos Aires Province, Mar del Plata attracts millions of tourists every year to its sandy beaches and lively culture. During the summer weekends it can get very crowded here but outside the summer months, the city takes on a much more relaxed feel.

At the geographical center of Argentina is Cordoba, the country’s second largest city. At the northern side of Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, stands one of the most iconic mountain peaks in the world and probably the best one in Andes mountain - Mount Fitz Roy. This video documentary takes us to the base of the mountain and the stunning lake of Laguna de los tres which is very popular among hikers from all over the world. It was one of the many places we visited during our Patagonian expedition in Argentina and is one of the best till date. The Carretera Austral is a 1200km long road in the south of Chile which connects the most remote areas of the country. The ruta 7 is a paradise for adventure seekers as it is a mostly unpaved road which brings you to the lesser known parts of Patagonia in the stunning Los Lagos and Aysen Region.
Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. After finishing this adventure in the last episode we wanted to get to El Chaltén in Argentina with a visit to the O’Higgins Glacier and an overnight stay at the Farm Candelario Mancilla.
To do the border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chaltén one first needs to take a boat to cross the O’Higgins lake and get to Candelario Mancilla on the other side. We opted in for the additional boat excursion to see the O’Higgins Glacier and have some whisky with ice from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
The next stretch we needed to hike for 22km to Laguna del Desierto where we took another boat to cross over to the southern shore where we spend the night camping before hitchhiking the remaining 37km to El Chaltén.
El Chaltén is the trekking capital of Argentina and one of the best spots for hiking and climbing in Patagonia. From the several hiking options in this area we chose the popular hike to Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre first before hiking to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres on another dayhike.
This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using altogether 2 boat, 1 bus and one car - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in el Chalten:
