Quito is the capital of Ecuador, and the second largest city. Established during the 16th century on Inca ruins, Quito became the first city in the world to be declared by UNESCO a cultural heritage for the humanity in 1978.
The city has more history than buildings. There are more things to do in Quito than you can count, but make sure not to miss the Middle of the World monument.

Otavalo Animal Market - Ecuador
Saturday morning is when the Farmers Market happens in Otavalo. A very interesting part of this is the weekly Animal Market - don't miss it. It is basically over by early afternoon so go early and you have plenty of time for the handcrafts and produce market later.
Here animals are bought and sold. This is an actual market for the locals living in the villages and valleys around Otavalo. Most tourists just stay in town and go to the handcrafts and food market, so you will not see many tourists. But the sights are great.
The noise, sounds and for sure the smell you will not forget quickly. It is very hard to show in a few minutes what you can experience for two hours or more. Only about 6 or 7 blocks from the centre of town.

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, high up in the South American Andes, is where this journey begins. On sixth of December, 1536, Quito was newly founded and built on the ruins of an Inca town. Thus originated the Plaza Grande, the square in which many of the country’s historic events have taken place, from the country’s foundation right up until its Independence. Today the city has a new attraction, El Teleférico, the highest cable car in South America whose spectacular views are quite overwhelming. When the Spanish conquered the Inca realm, various Catholic Orders followed. The Jesuits built the Baroque church of La Compañia De Jesus that is known as the most remarkable religious building in the whole of South America. The Chiva Express is a colourful ‘bus on rails’ that travels along the ‘Autoferro De Los Volcanes’, theRoad Of Volcanoes. It passes through several small villages and soon nature is all that is to be seen. The fertile highlands of the Andes, located between snow covered volcanoes, are a real adventure. Close to Machachi, the first section of the railway line comes to an end and the train stops in the middle of nowhere. Nariz Del Diabolo, the ‘Devil’s Nose’, is the most difficult and dangerous part of the journey as it negotiates a steep slope five hundred metres into the depths below. The rails zigzag and the train moves slowly forwards and then backwards, thus it is able to gradually overcome the difference in altitude. Alausi appears and it is here that the world’s last great adventure on rails comes to an end. A challenging yet marvellous experience, thanks to the Amazing Autoferro De Los Volcanes!

Ride Day 44: Quito, Ecuador to Cuenca, Ecuador
Full Post: After spending 4 nights in Quito Ecuador, I needed to get back on the road and the 290+ miles (487 kilometres) to Cuenca, Ecuador. The ride would take me deep into the Andes Ranges and would take over 8 hours.
It was so great to get on the road again and driving high up mountains and then deep into the valleys through some spectacular villages on my way to Cuenca was a treat I had been missing for a while.
I would travel through many towns on my journey to Cuenca, such as Machachi, Latacunga Canton, Ambato, Riobamba, Sibambe and Azogues onto my final destination in Cuenca, Ecuador.
Hotel Vargus, Cuenca, Ecuador
Nice modern hotel, is in a decent location about 10 minutes from old city centre. Some rooms have balconies (my room did) with views of the city.
The bathroom was roomy and the beds comfortable and the room spacious. There are also quite a few restaurants and cafe's nearby. There is a small restaurant cafe on premises with room service.
The WIFI was only basic and needs to be improved for business customers. (resulting in loss of one star). I was able to park my Motorbike in Secure Carpark below.
Cuenca, Ecuador
Cuenca (Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca) is a city in southern Ecuador’s Andes mountains. It's known for its Tomebamba River waterfront and handicrafts including Panama hats. Its central plaza, Parque Calderón, is home to the blue-domed Catedral Nueva and the 16th-century Catedral Vieja, now a religious museum. The Museo y Parque Arqueológico Pumapungo displays ruins and artefacts from the Incan city of Tomebamba. From Wikipedia
Saquisili- authentic rural market Ecuador
Every Thursday hundreds of indigenous people from the mountains prepare to make the journey towards Saquisilí where they gather for market day. They arrive in the early hours of the morning, sometimes while it is still dark, and set up their stalls to showcase the variety of products they have come to sell. The whole town is converted into a vibrant market where one can walk through the central plaza and shop for handicrafts of all kinds.
The market vendors will sell everything from pots and pans, to pigs and goats, and colourful handicrafts. The market is well known for its animal market. Food stalls will sell a variety of local specialties, while the local butcher slaughters pigs, cattle and sheep to sell off piece by piece. The market, as with many of the markets in Ecuador, is a chance for locals to socialize and an opportunity to wear their finest.
Enjoy this truly authentic market set amongst the stunning and spectacular Andean mountains. Not only is it a great opportunity to find some beautiful local crafts and taste the local cuisine, but also a chance to see and experience the culture traditions of the indigenous communities of this area of Ecuador. Setting foot in this market is like stepping into another world!
