Quito Ecuador Travel Guide
Quito, formally San Francisco de Quito, is the capital city of Ecuador, and at an elevation of 9,350 feet, it is the highest official capital city in the world. Located in Ecuador, South America, Quito is situated in the Guayllabamba river basin, on the eastern slopes of Pichincha Volcano, an active stratovolcano in the Andes mountains.
Quito is the second most populous city in Ecuador, after Guayaquil. It is also the capital of the Pichincha Province and the seat of the Quito Canton|Metropolitan District of Quito. In 2008, the city was designated as the headquarters of the Union of South American Nations, UNASUR. Quito, a beautiful city and capital of Ecuador, offers great cultural activity throughout its districts and is a great starting point for visits to the rest of Ecuador.
The historic center of Quito has one of the largest, least-altered and best-preserved historic centers in the Americas, and is undoubtedly one of the cities main tourist attractions. Quito, along with Kraków, were the first World Cultural Heritage Sites declared by UNESCO in 1978. The central square of Quito is located about 25 km south of the equator; the city itself extends to within about 1 km of zero latitude. A monument and museum marking the general location of the equator is known locally as Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world), to avoid confusion, as the word ecuador is spanish language for equator.
Quito is roughly divided into three parts: the Old City (Centro Histórico) in the middle, with South (Sur) and North (Norte) districts to either side. The South part is mainly industrial and residential, a working class area. The city's main inter-province bus terminal is located here in the Quitumbe district, as well as the main train station. The North part is the modern Quito, with high-rise buildings, shopping centers, the financial district (locally known as the micro-centro, and upper-class residential areas and some working-class housing areas. This area of Quito is also home to several museums, art galleries and the cities most renown education institutions, as well as home to a variety of restaurants and nightlife options.
The North Part of Quito is also home to the city's largest concentration of parks, with the most new one being Parque Bicentenario. The Old City continues to be Quito's main attraction. Quito's surrounding valleys (Valle de Tumbaco & Valle de los Chillos) also are great weekend get aways, with excellent local ecuadorian cuisine, as well as some great outdoor eco-tourism opportunities.

Ecuador Adventure Travel
Ecuador Adventure Travel - Adventure Setting off on a trek into the Andes can seem like stepping into a fairy tale: there's the patchwork of small villages, gurgling brooks and rolling fields, with a slowly wheeling condor overhead. Then the mists clear, a view of those towering snow-covered peaks comes into view, and the adventure begins -- the challenging climb to the summit of a 5000m-high volcano.
Although the view from the top is sublime, you don't have to scale a mountain to enjoy the Andes. These verdant landscapes make a fine backdrop for mountain-biking, horseback-riding or hiking from village to village, overnighting at local guesthouses along the way. Ecuador's other landscapes offer equally alluring adventures, from surfing tight breaks off the Pacific coast to white-water rafting Class V rivers along the jungle-clad banks of the Oriente across your Ecuador Adventure.
Beyond the cities, the Ecuadorian Travel landscape unfolds in all its startling variety. There are Andean villages renowned for their colorful textiles and sprawling markets, Afro-Ecuadorian towns where days end with meals of fresh seafood and memorable sunsets, and remote settlements in the Amazon where shamans still harvest the traditional rainforest medicines of their ancestors. I hope you liked this Ecuador Adventure Travel!

Chimborazo, February 2017
Read about my experience:
This ride was exhilarating! I previously rode Death Road in Bolivia in July 2015. Compared to Death Road, this ride was definitely more dangerous/advanced but less life-threatening. Recorded with my GoPro Hero 4 Silver. I am still playing around with all its uses. I used a helmet mount, which was attached to the visor. This is why the video appears to be quite shaky, although the terrain was quite sandy and rocky for much of the ride.
To do this ride, you must go to Riobamba, Chimborazo Province, in Ecuador. The company (Pro Bici; info below) arranges for all of the entrance information to the national park.
Chimborazo is an inactive volcano and the highest point in Ecuador. It also is the furthest point from the center of the Earth. The route began at 4800 m. on the main road and then ventured off onto a new trail that opened at the end of 2016. The route passed by an archeological place known as the Inca Barracks (altitude 3675m) with small Inca and colonial ruins, a mineral water spring, hummingbirds, hawks, other birds, native fauna and flora. After the drive out of the Inca Barracks to the top of the mountain range at 3900m, we rode 5km downhill on a dirt road to the Cuatro Esquinas (Four Corners) Community and continued 10km on asphalt downhill until reaching the busy Pan American North Road closer to Riobamba.
This tour cost $60 US, and the total biking distance is 40km of which 27.5km are dirt and 12.5km asphalt, total biking time from 4 to 4.5 hours and total tour time is about 9 hours.
