The Bombardier Dash 8 or Q-Series, previously known as the de Havilland Canada Dash 8 or DHC-8, is a series of twin-engined, medium range, turboprop airliners. Introduced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) in 1984, they are now produced by Bombardier Aerospace. Over 1,000 Dash 8s of all models have been built, with Bombardier forecasting a total production run of 1,192 aircraft of all variants through to 2016.
The Dash 8 was developed from the de Havilland Canada Dash 7, which featured extreme short take-off and landing (STOL) performance. With the Dash 8, DHC focused on improving cruise performance and lowering operational costs. The engine chosen was the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100. The aircraft has been delivered in four series. The Series 100 has a maximum capacity of 39, the Series 200 has the same capacity but offers more powerful engines, the Series 300 is a stretched, 50-seat version, and the Series 400 is further stretched to 78 passengers. Models delivered after 1997 have cabin noise suppression and are designated with the prefix Q. Production of the Series 100 ceased in 2005, and the Q200 and Q300 in 2009.
Q400: Stretched and improved 70–78 passenger version that entered service in 2000. Its 360 knot (667 km/h) cruise speed is 60–90 knots (111–166 km/h) higher than its competitors/predecessors. Powered by PW150A engines rated at 5,071 shp (3,781 kW) at maximum power (4,850 shp or 3,620 kW maximum continuous rated). The maximum operating altitude is 25,000 ft (7,600 m) for the standard version, although a version with drop-down oxygen masks is offered, which increases maximum operating altitude to 27,000 ft (8,200 m). Learn more about airBaltic:
Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic: “For the first time, we have designed a special livery for our aircraft to mark the Olympics. In another first, Latvia’s 58 athletes will be joined by their counterparts across the border on dedicated airBaltic flights both to and from the games, in what could be called a truly pan-Baltic team. We sincerely hope that at the end of the Olympic games, our aircraft will return just a bit heavier due to the medals won.”
Žoržs Tikmers, Head of Latvian Olympic Delegation: “Latvia is proud to send its strongest Winter Olympic team ever to Sochi. We are delighted to have World and European champions and medallists, and winners of various competitions. This is a historic moment as airBaltic flies the special Winter Olympics livery for the first time, it is an honour for the athletes, and for the airline. I am confident that Sochi Winter Olympics will be exciting for all sports fans in Latvia.”
Aldis Mūrnieks, Chairman of the Board of SJSC Riga International Airport, said: “Every time when our athletes depart for the games, the atmosphere at Riga Airport is very special, because we are aware of the fact that this is the moment when their Olympic journey begins. Latvia’s athletes have always demonstrated the performance of the global level. Their determination to achieve the best results sets a good example to all of us, because it requires great commitment and precision to reach the top – whether it be sports, aviation or any other area. The airport wishes the Olympic Team of Latvia success in reaching the highest peaks in their particular disciplines!”
As announced earlier, airBaltic has designed a special livery for its aircraft to mark the Olympics. Applying the ornament the surface area of which was a staggering 40m ² to the left side of the plane consisted of painting with four colours and applying a sticker afterwards. The colours were three different shades of green and a shade of blue, and were all used for the mountain view of the symbol. The paint itself was a polyurethane coating, one used specifically for the needs of aviation. It has a very high endurance level, which any material used in a plane’s livery needs in order to remain intact in the high speed that an airplane can reach. This paint has to be elastic also - a little rubber-like, because the airplane, once high up in the atmosphere, expands slightly. The sticker placed on the paint was made out of vinyl film, which is so strong that it can remain on the surface it is placed on for up to seven years.
airBaltic serves over 60 destinations from its home base in Riga, Latvia. From every one of these, airBaltic offers convenient connections via North Hub Riga to its network spanning Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, CIS and the Middle East.

Kayak Adventure 950 km 4 months in US west coast, DAY 50
When I wake up at 6:30 a.m., tattoo of rain on the tent surrounded me. A thermometer hung in the tent read 63 degrees F. Breaking up a camp in the rain for departure is troublesome because I cannot avoid letting some gear get wet.
I ate bagels for a breakfast.
I paddled out into the Columbia River at 9:00 a.m.
It was rain and light tailwind under gloomy and cold sky all day today. Wind hit me continuously because water surface of the great river is entirely windswept. Since that wind evaporated water soaking into the outer layer of my jacket, the enthalpy of vaporization took heat from my body without cease. Therefore, it was very cold regardless of the temperature. After I endured for long time, I was able to find a landing spot. I landed on, put on a down-jacket, and got warm. Instead, I moistened the down because I put on it in the rain.
However, in here I have to endure just only the cold rain and wind. It is a carefree travel relative to the situation of the Columbia River Gorge where I was constantly on the alert for sudden change to windstorm. Viewing rainy forest from on the great river, smells of water and life surrounded me as if I was in a cradle on the water. In contrast to that natural beauty, powers of huge ocean-going cargo ship overwhelmed me which I felt fear to go near to.
I began to look for some space to pitch the tent, for the evening was coming. However, at the first landing beach, I saw a notice board saying Private Beach and was not able to find a landowner's house. Therefore, I had to give up. At the second landing beach, a landowner was not at home. Therefore, I also had to give up. At the third landing beach, when I visited a large two-storied house overlooking the river, Joan Harvey Chester gave a cheerful consent to pitch the tent on their beach with tender smile. Already it was 6:40 p.m. I paddled continuously for nine hours and 40 minutes for 38 miles.
Feeling grateful that they offered me a safe and comfortable camping space, I was pitching the tent on the well-kept grass. When I almost finished it, Joan and Richard Erickson came and gave me a more affection; they offered me invitation to stay in their house although we had had only few conversations yet. The house was not their residence I had thought but was their elegant hotel with three rooms named The Villa at Little Cape Horn, and to my surprise, they offered me a gorgeous room with a view of the river. In addition, caring me, they cooked a hot meal just for me and washed my clothes. I was stricken by meeting with an unexpected cordial reception here too.
While I was taking a hot shower, my frozen body was melting. I can sleep in a large bed. Their deep affections wrap up me.
