David’s Been Here travels through Lesotho to explore what many call “the Kingdom in the Sky.” Lesotho is the only country in the world to be entirely above 1,000 meters above sea level. David’s favorite hotel in Lesotho was the Maliba Mountain Lodge in Tsehlanyane National Park, which he profiles in this video.
The lodge graciously hosted David in a luxurious chalet with double beds, beautiful vistas, wood burning fireplace, and handcrafted furniture. The Maliba Lodge has 6 mountainside chalets for couples and 4 river chalets that can accommodate up to 8 people.
People come to Lesotho to enjoy the natural landscapes and local culture. Maliba Lodge took David horseback riding, on a village tour, and gave him a much-needed back massage at the hotel spa.
Some of the features that make Maliba Mountain Lodge so great is the free Wi-Fi, heated floors, and heated beds (yes, you read that right). David then lets Daniel, the hotel’s Guest Relations Manager, say a little bit more about the property.
Daniel explains that the hotel is situated in the northern part of the country. It has two room types: the 5-star mountain chalets and the 3-star self-catering cottages. Activities offered by Maliba Mountain Lodge include: horseback riding, hiking, spa treatments, and cultural visits to nearby villages. Guests who want to horseback ride are sent with an experienced guide and all the necessary equipment to explore the trails of Tsehlanyane National Park.
Village tours are meant to familiarize guests with the local culture. Stops include seeing the local doctor, traditional mud huts, and the local school. The video finishes by showing us the landscaped gardens and unique architecture found at Maliba.

Lesotho Highlands Tour 5th February 2018
First day of 3-day road trip through Lesotho's Maluti Mountains. At midday we left from Maseru north to Leribe & lunched at northern town of Butha-Buthe before continuing inland to climb into mountains at 2,820m high Moteng Pass. From there we traversed the 3,000 metre high 46kms long Roof of Africa road past the Afriski mountain resort & Letseng Diamond Mine before descending into the deep valleys to small town of Mapholaneng, and further on east towards Mokhotlong. The highway descends down to a river crossing of the great Senqu River of Lesotho - where it meets other great rivers in a confluence basin of gorges before heading south then west into South Africa to become the Orange (Gariep) River. After a brief visit to Mokhotlong we turned back & continued south along the recently constructed A31 highway following the Sehonghong River Valley until a final climb over the 3,240 metre high Koti-Sephola Pass & down to Sani Flats. A short 10km drive further on saw our arrival in darkness at Sani Mountain Lodge by 8pm, where we had a meal & stayed overnight at the nearby backpackers hostel.
Climbing Thabana Ntlenyana Mountain, Drakensburg Mountains, Lesotho
For more information on the Sani Pass and climbing Thabana Ntlenyana see our blog:
Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482m) is the highest peak in the Drakensberg Mountains and the highest point in Southern Africa. We climbed this from Mamokae village (about 6km from Sani Top) with a Basotho guide, George, on a glorious day in April 2012. Thank you, George, for sharing your beautiful country with us.
Maletsunyane Falls x LESOTHO [travel]
Located near Semonkong, the Site of Smoke, a remote town in the capital district (Maseru) of Lesotho; a Kingdom landlocked within the country at the southernmost tip of Africa. The Falls is close to 200m high, you can imagine why the camera shook so dreadfully. [A MUST VISIT]
I do not own rights to the music.
