In this episode I take you to the the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho, the highest country in Africa. This country has the highest low point on earth.
The entire country is 1000 meters above sea level. It's located about 7 hours drive south of Johannesburg and 5 hours west of Durban. For the next 72 hours I am going to be showing you what to see and do in Lesotho!
This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!
After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.
Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.
Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.
We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)
Have you ever been to the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho? Leave a comment below if you've been or want to go!

David’s Been Here travels through Lesotho to explore what many call “the Kingdom in the Sky.” Lesotho is the only country in the world to be entirely above 1,000 meters above sea level. David’s favorite hotel in Lesotho was the Maliba Mountain Lodge in Tsehlanyane National Park, which he profiles in this video.
The lodge graciously hosted David in a luxurious chalet with double beds, beautiful vistas, wood burning fireplace, and handcrafted furniture. The Maliba Lodge has 6 mountainside chalets for couples and 4 river chalets that can accommodate up to 8 people.
People come to Lesotho to enjoy the natural landscapes and local culture. Maliba Lodge took David horseback riding, on a village tour, and gave him a much-needed back massage at the hotel spa.
Some of the features that make Maliba Mountain Lodge so great is the free Wi-Fi, heated floors, and heated beds (yes, you read that right). David then lets Daniel, the hotel’s Guest Relations Manager, say a little bit more about the property.
Daniel explains that the hotel is situated in the northern part of the country. It has two room types: the 5-star mountain chalets and the 3-star self-catering cottages. Activities offered by Maliba Mountain Lodge include: horseback riding, hiking, spa treatments, and cultural visits to nearby villages. Guests who want to horseback ride are sent with an experienced guide and all the necessary equipment to explore the trails of Tsehlanyane National Park.
Village tours are meant to familiarize guests with the local culture. Stops include seeing the local doctor, traditional mud huts, and the local school. The video finishes by showing us the landscaped gardens and unique architecture found at Maliba.

Maseru in Lesotho, travel, hotels, holiday, business, resorts, Basotho Hat shop
,Maseru has a total of six hotels, two of which, the Lesotho Sun and the Maseru Sun,.[18][19] During the 1960s, prior to the relaxation of South Africa's g were popular attractions among South African visitors, but the interest in them has since waned.[19] The Basotho Hat shop at the city's entrance is a popular source for souvenirs.[5]
The main tourist attractions of Lesotho, Lancer's Gap, Sani Pass, Afriski resort, Katse dam, Thaba Bosiu and the Maluti Mountains are located a short distance from Maseru. However, distances are deceiving in Lesotho as even a 120 km trip can take over 3 hours due to the rugged terrain.

Most of the traditional thatched-roof mud-brick houses, called rondavels, have been replaced with modern housing and office blocks which have a tint of traditional architecture. There have recently been some new buildings in the center of the city, particularly the building across LNDC center which now houses Good times cafe, a Vodacom shop, offices and the new building of the Ministry of Health which was completed in late 2007.

Lesotho is Crazy Beautiful
I'm on Instagram at
Lesotho is crazy spectacular. It's just one of those countries that suits me. It's full of incredible mountains, and lots of rugged landscape. There's this wild freedom to the country that just grabbed me right away.
But, Lesotho is also a challenge; especially as a photographer. There are so many amazing things to see and photograph in the country, but it's a bit of a challenge finding ways to properly photograph them. There's very little tourism infrastructure, and even the roads don't really have places that you can safely pull over to make photos.
Still, there is this energy to Lesotho that I really love. It has me back to feeling really good about travel. It has my spirits back up, and has me excited to explore. Lesotho even has me excited for a bit of mis-adventure, and I got some. On my second day driving around, I smashed into a rock and bent the rim of my tire. Luckily, I got some help and eventually continued on my way.
I ended the day at a place in Lesotho called Semonkong. I came here to photograph a waterfall called Maletsunyane. It's the number one reason I came to the country, and though it would be even more spectacular if the water levels were higher, it's still impressive.

Crossing border between Lesotho and Aouth Africa (Maseru)
Please like my videos, and don't forget to subscribe by clicking the subscribe button up top!
The border between Lesotho and South Africa is 909 kilometres (565 mi) long and forms a complete loop, as Lesotho is an enclave entirely surrounded by South Africa. The border follows the Caledon River, the drainage divide of the Drakensberg mountains, the Tele River, the Orange River, the Makhaleng River, and a series of hills joining the Makhaleng back to the Caledon.
