ORGAN BUILDER 12 - Kögler

Christian Kögler (2003)

The full name of the company is Firma Orgelbau Kögler GmbH and it started in 2003 when Christian Kögler took over the company from his father Helmut. But the history of the company goes way back to 1832.

The founder of the current Austrian company was Josef Breinbauer who started an organ building shop close to Passau, before moving to Ottenstein in Upper Austria. The company would go on to build some 300 instruments in various European countries. Josef died in 1882 and his son Leopold and later on his grandson, also Leopold took over the company. Both Leopolds died in 1920 as a result of WWI. Wilhelm Zika took over the company in 1921. When he died in 1954, his son Wilhelm took over the company and changed its name. Helmut Kögler took over the company in 1972.

The big turning point in the company was in 1990 when they worked together with the Dutch/Swiss organ builder Bernhardt Edskes. From then on the company specialized in mechanical action instruments built in Baroque style. Their instruments can now be found in the various German speaking European countries, The Netherlands, Scotland and beyond.

Their instruments are built using the best of materials and by excellent craftsmen. They use wedge bellows for a “breathing” wind supply. The pipes are only voiced once in place in the completed organ, on location.

Major installations include the 41-stop organ built for the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and the 45-stop organ in the Stiftskirche in Kremsmunster.
