Fly Fishing the Awakino River North Island New Zealand
This video about fly fishing the Awakino river is about an adventure that start in Auckland. Being stuck for several weeks in a concrete desert, I felt the urgent need to escape the busy city life. Therefore, I drove into the backcountry of the North Island of New Zealand and explored the river on a 3 days trip.
Many unforeseen things happened and the fishing did not convince at first, but in the end: is it about the fish?

LIFE'S a BEACH WHAKATANE NZ
Music by Kevin MacLeod
Ohope Beach is a beach in the eastern Bay of Plenty, on the northeast coast of the North Island of New Zealand, six kilometres east and over the hill, from Whakatane.
It is a popular holiday destination during the New Zealand summer, and features several kilometres of safe swimming beaches. The western end of the beach, named 'West End' is a popular surfing area during the summer and Christmas period.
Coastlands Beach is located just before Whakatane, taking a left hand turn before going over the Whakatane bridge. It is a great place for landbased fishing and for putting the kontiki longline out. Snapper, kahawai, trevally and yellowtail kingfish are the main fish species caught here. Also an ideal place to go for a relaxing walk with the family and the dog.
The Wandering Writer: Sun, Sand, Surf - Northland, NZ
Nicola Claire is the Wandering Writer...
Getting inspiration for that next hot romance novel wherever she can.
Today, it's a family vacation to the Far North of New Zealand. Enjoying the sun, sand and surf at Northland beaches. From the golden sands of Cable Bay to a windswept 90 Mile Beach at Ahipara, Nicola and her boys check out beautiful and stunning locations from her childhood to showcase for you. Coopers Beach, historic Russell and the Bay of Islands, and quaint Mangonui with its old wooden buildings and mirror-like harbour. It's all here, as well as a quick look at Tane Mahuta, the 2000 year old Kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest.
And you never know, you may see a setting from one of her books as she takes you on a trip of a lifetime around Doubtless Bay, the Far North, and Northland, New Zealand.

STREAKED GURNARD
Streaked Gurnard (Trigloporus lastoviza)
Trigloporus lastoviza belongs to the family Triglidae, order Scorpaeniformes, class Actinopterygii and phylum Chordata.
The Streaked Gurnard, is a species of searobin found in the Mediterranean Sea, eastern Atlantic: Norway to South Africa including Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands; southwestern Indian Ocean: South Africa to Mozambique. This species is the only known member of its genus.
It can be found over rocks and sand, at depths of from 10 to 150 metres, though it usually occurs at less than 40 metres. The streaked gurnard feeds on crustaceans.
This species grows to a length of 40 centimetres, although usually only half that size. It has a large head with a steep forehead. Uniquely amongst gurnards the body is covered with transverse ridges of skin that originate at the lateral line. The lateral line scales are enlarged and armed with small spines. It has two dorsal fins, the first with 9-11 spines and the second, like the anal fin, has 14-17 rays. The caudal fin is truncate. The streaked gurnard is red above and pale below with dark spots on the head and back. The grey pectoral fins have large dark blue spots.
The streaked gurnard on this video was seen on the 27th December 2014 at Mgarr ix-Xini on Gozo’s south coast at a depth of 14m.

Kawhia Hot Water Beach, New Zealand [DJI Drone]
Kawhia is a peaceful beachside town steep in Maori history, and is the final resting place for the voyaging Tainui Waka (canoe). This heritage is illustrated not only in the community of Kawhia but in the world famous Kawhia Kai Festival – held in February each year the Kawhia Kai Festival is a celebration of Maori Cuisine, culture, and traditions and draws crowds from near and far. Lonely Plant listed the Kawhia Kai Festival in the Top 10 Indigenous events for overseas visitors and tourists to attend.
The off-the-beaten-track and somewhat untouched nature of Kawhia provides for the perfect destination to escape to. The Kawhia Harbour is great for a spot of fishing as well as off the wharf. On a hot summer’s day you will often find local children jumping off the wharf to cool off.
Kawhia Hot Water Beach Location:
Directions: Drive to the end of Ocean Beach Road (ask one of the friendly locals if you have trouble finding this road)
Park in the car park and walk over the sand dunes down onto ocean beach.
