Best Vietnam Travel - NORTH VIETNAM's STUNNING CHURCHES of Nam Dinh
I've always wanted to see the churches of Nam Dinh. In the past heading towards Ninh Binh on the road, the familiar towers and arches of massive gothic style French influenced churches would peak from beyond the horizon, sparking my curiosity. Later on, I saw many pictures of the online. So I knew that one day I had to go see them for myself. And it happened.
The Hanoi Bus Station has quite a few buses in Nam Dinh's direction. In fact, every 15 to 30 minutes or so. I recommend going to a ticket office and buying a ticket first, but be warned that these mini buses still might take their time leaving to pick up more passengers along the way. Remember that. And the buses can be quite hot too.
About 2 and a half hours later I made it to Nam Dinh, got into a cab and checked into my hotel. I rested for about an hour because I was completely exhausted from the early morning flight and the time on the bus. I tried to rent a car and driver with two rental places and they were all either busy or gave some outrageous number. So I contacted the same taxi guy that dropped me off. Then I realized that all of the churches were in the rural province of Nam Dinh and not in the city. This was a shocker because I was planning to see at least ten. In the back of my mind, I kept thinking that they were next to each other, similarly to how Ho Nai in Bien Hoa's mega churches are. I was more than wrong.
All the major churches are far apart from each other. You can ride a motorbike for sure, but it'll take you all day. I only had about 4 hours or so before sunset. So because I didn't know for sure where I was going and the driver wasn't an expert on the churches, we just opted to use the meter instead, which at the end of it was 1.8 million Dong. The first few churches weren't that far from each other, but they weren't on the main road. They are all tucked in little communities off of the side. The last one called Hai Ly or the Ruined Church as the locals call it was quite a ways away from all the other churches.
I was disappointed that I couldn't see more churches. I was also disappointed that pictures made them look more grand and beautiful. But that's photoshop for you. There was also the fact that many of the churches were given a new coat of paint. You see, that's the problem and the double edged sword. These are active churches that people use. So naturally, they have to restore them and improve them. And a new fresh coat of paint is a part of that. Though, I personally would just have left it alone. But that's not the local mindset.
So are the churches still worth checking out? Yes. Give yourself from morning to evening to properly explore them. Some of them are stunning. Their grand size made it impossible to film them completely. The people in the churches were so nice. From my experiences of traveling, church volunteers and visitors have always been nicer to me than temple people. Many of the church construction workers worked for free in the blazing sun. Some of them even invited me to drink some tea with them. They were proud to show off their work, and rightfully so. These churches were beautiful.
The night concluded with a meal of roasted and boiled ducks. The restaurant where I got the food from didn't have any tables left and it was just too loud and dark to make a proper video, so I bought the food back to my hotel restaurant instead. Despite being a draining day, I slept like a baby on the hard rock of a bed and enjoyed my time running around Nam Dinh a lot.
If you're in Ninh Binh. There is absolutely no reason to not stop by Nam Dinh for a day, especially if you believe in Jesus or if you can appreciate Gothic architecture. Nam Dinh is only 40 minutes or so from Ninh Binh after all.

Nam Dinh province embraces traditional values
Located in the southeast of the Red River Delta, Nam Dinh province retains many traditions, customs, beliefs, festivals, traditional crafts, and historical and cultural relics. The province has become a popular tourist destination in recent years.
Nestled about 100 km to the south of Hanoi, Nam Dinh is easily accessible by train, car, and motorbike thanks to very good roads from Hanoi. The province has nearly 4,000 historical and cultural relics including Phu Day temple, and Co Le, Keo, and Luong pagodas and Ngoi bridge and the Nam Dinh flag pole which carries rich cultural value. Many local relics are closely associated with famous Vietnamese figures including Nguyen Hien, Luong The Vinh, poets Tu Xuong and Nguyen Binh and former Party leader Truong Chinh. There are more than 70 craft villages involved in woodcarving, lacquer, rattan weaving, and ornamental tree plantations.
More than 100 traditional festivals take place in the province every year attracting thousands of visitors. The Phu Day temple, Tran temple, Vieng market, and the seal-opening festivals are among the most popular.
Do Vu Loi of the National Architecture Institute says: “Its cultural heritage and religious establishments are advantages for Nam Dinh in developing its tourism. Cultural relics and their significant values date back to the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties. Many studies on the value of this heritage has been carried out. Tapping this heritage could bring major cultural and social benefits to the province”.
Historical and cultural relics from the Tran dynasty have enabled Nam Dinh to develop a form of spiritual tourism. Festival and craft villages have also been promoted for tourists. Nguyen Cong Khuong is Head of the Tourism Section of the province’s Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism: “Nam Dinh is the homeland of the Tran dynasty. 750 years ago, the Dynasty was established and flourished here. Thus, the province has rich cultural resources. There are many traditional festivals that are closely associated with the local relics, many of them are spring and village festivals. The wet rice culture is well reflected in local festivals and the arts such as water puppetry art and the duck catching festival. Craft villages are also one of our tourist attractions”.
Nam Dinh province has a coastline of 72 km along which many marine tourist sites were set up including Thinh Long tourist site in Hai Hau district and Quat Lam in Giao Thuy district. In particular, the Xuan Thuy National Park with an ecosystem of mangrove forests is a destination for migrant birds. It is the first Ramsar site in Vietnam and Southeast Asia and also a favorite destination for visitors.
Nguyen Phuc Hoi is Vice Director of Xuan Thuy National Park: “Xuan Thuy National Park is a submerged land located on the estuary. Its typical ecosystem is the submerged ecological system representing northern Vietnam’s sea and includes mangrove forests, lagoons, and sand banks. The park still retains the ecological system of the Red River mouth region”.
Local rural villages with their customs and traditions typical of the Red River Delta civilization are ideal for tours. Local specialties such as beef noodle, the wet rice paper spring rolls of Khe village, and Siu Chau peanut candies are among many attractions of Nam Dinh province.

Hanh Thien village- a unique architectural complex in Nam Dinh
Hanh Thien, a 600 years old village in Nam Dinh, is famous for having a lot of successful laureates. The village still retains traditional architectural value which reflects the wisdom and vision of the village founders hundreds of years ago.
It takes about an hour to travel by car from Nam Dinh city to Hanh Thien ancient village, which looks like a carp heading to the sea. It is surrounded by the Red and Ninh Co rivers creating a beautiful landscape and serve as waterway in the village. There are 14 hamlets which are 60 meters away from each other. In the center of the village are the communal house, a temple, and a market.
Keo Hanh Thien in Nam Dinh province and Keo pagoda in Thai Binh province are twins. Associate Professor Doctor Pham Hung Cuong of the Construction University says Hanh Thien village has a complete architectural design in terms of transportation and environment.
The village map was made thoroughly reflecting the qualifications and wisdom of the village predecessors: “Usually, through dozens of years of development, villages in the Red River Delta have evolved forming small alleys. But in Hanh Thien all alleys seem to be deliberately designed in the early days of the village formation”.
Architects say that in the early days, all houses in Hanh Thien village look toward the Southeast showing the villagers’ respect for their living environment. The village is surrounded by artificial canals which have roads above them- an evidence of the scientific planning by the village founders.
Mr Cuong again: “The river that was dug around the village replaces many ponds inside the village because all the canals have natural flows in and out. Such design facilitates the water release through two sides of the river”.
Walking along the riverside in Hanh Thien village gives you a peace in mind. Hanh Thien village with its unique architecture and planning has become a precious heritage. Le Thi Luyen is a third year student at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology: “This is my first visit to Hanh Thien village. I’m so impressed. It’s a friendly, ancient village that embraces Vietnamese identity. I feel peaceful when I come here.

These are the top 5 places to go and things to see when you are in Ninh Binh, Vietnam.
Ninh Binh is a beautiful area not far from Hanoi. You can go to Ninh Binh on a day trip but I highly suggest spending a few days there to enjoy the lush green landscapes and tour the countryside. My favorite things to see in Ninh Binh are:

Catholic churches in rural Nam Dinh Province, Vietnam

Surprising concentration of churches in the coastal area of Nam Dinh province of Northern Vietnam, a 3-hour drive from Hanoi. My estimate is, there is a church or big chapel for every square kilometer of inhabited area, open field space notwithstanding.
The country had been evangelized starting from the mid 16th century when in 1533 a Portuguese missionary first set foot there. Many churches may date back to that period, although not many of those are still standing. Most are baroque roman-iberian styled, while a newer few are in the neo-gothic favorite architecture of the French.
In 1659 the Catholic Church established the first two dioceses in Vietnam, one right at the area we are visiting, another centered around Vinh Long in the Mekong Delta South of Saigon, now HCM City. The former was called diocese of the Dang Ngoai, the other diocese of the Dang Trong. Dang Ngoai and Dang Trong mean Northern Country and Southern Country, respectively.
The people around those areas have been until today fierce devotees to the Catholic Faith. A total of 117 Vietnamese christian martyr saints have been canonized by the Church, more than any other nationality in the world including ancient Romans and Japanese. Other martyrs not canonized numbered by the tens of thousands.
The area could very well be a pilgrimage destination for Catholics in Vietnam and elsewhere. It is not well-known as of yet to the general public, but you can hire transportation and guides in Hanoi. A day-long visit can be worthwhile, while you have time in Hanoi, or on your way to Hai Phong Ha Long area.
The MOST BEAUTIFUL place in VIETNAM is CAO BANG.
Traveling Far North Vietnam continues with Cao Bang Province's majestic Ban Gioc Waterfalls and one of my favorite caves called Nguom Ngao. Leaving Meo Vac by private car and arriving six hours later to Cao Bang, we didn't have much time to spare. We dropped our bags off at the hotel and got another car to drive us three hours to the caves and the waterfalls which are minutes from each other. I have been dreaming of this moment for a long time. This was one of my most highly anticipated places left in Vietnam to visit. I was in awe at just how natural the cave was without anything too touristy or colorful. It felt like a real dark cave and not an amusement park. The waterfalls are actually used as a natural border with China. Chinese tourists can be seen just across the waterway. At the end of the night we wrapped things up with some northern pho.
