The peninsula is notable for its olive oil and olive production. Also various types of wine are produced.
Tourism[edit]
Chalkidiki has been a popular summer tourist destination since the late 1950s when people from Thessaloniki started spending their summer holidays in the coastal villages. In the beginning tourists rented rooms in the houses of locals. By the 1960s, tourists from Austria and Germany started to visit Chalkidiki more frequently. Since the start of the big tourist boom in the 1970s, the whole region has been captured by tourism.[7] In the region there is a golf course and there is a plan for other four in the future.
Mining[edit]
Gold was mined in the region during antiquity by Philip II of Macedon and the next rulers. Since 2013, a revival of mining for gold and other minerals was underway with a number of concessions having been granted to Eldorado Gold of Canada. However, critics claim that mining would adversely affect tourism and the environment.[8]
Administration[edit]
The regional unit Chalkidiki is subdivided into five municipalities. These are (number as in the map in the infobox):[9]
Aristotelis (2)
Kassandra (4)
Nea Propontida (3)
Polygyros (1)
Sithonia (5)
Prefecture[edit]
As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit Chalkidiki was created out of the former prefecture Chalkidiki (Greek: Νομός Χαλκιδικής). The prefecture had the same territory as the present regional unit. At the same time, the municipalities were reorganised, according to the table below.[9]

Nea Roda, 130 km away from Thessaloniki, was built on the southern part of the Athos peninsula. A picturesque village has a paved narrow streets and traditional stone houses with flowery gardens, but recently, many new buildings have sprung up. While strolling through the place, you will be pleasantly surprised by the huge number of archaeological sites which testify about turbulent history of the location. A small harbor lies at the opposite side of Nea Roda, where local fishermen sell fresh fish and seafood at very favourable prices. You can choose either hotel or apartment accommodation with a sea view and friendly service. There are also daily boat trips to the Athos peninsula. Closeness of Ouranopolis (9 km), Ierissos (5 km), the Holy Mountain, Ammouliani (the only inhabited place on entire Halkidiki), Serbian monastery Kakovo and multitude of surrounding paradise-like beaches, are reasons more why you should choose Nea Roda for your summer destination.

Mount Athos - Greece HD Travel Channel
Mount Athos is a monastic republic, which under international law belongs to Greece, but it is managed autonomously. The access for women is strictly prohibited - out of reverence for the Virgin Mary. In recent years, the modernization of the monasteries were funded by the EU with 150 million EUR, although it is rumored that the assets of the monasteries could cover the Greek debt. Furthermore the monks are not always picky in their choice of methods. During the annual election of the supreme chairman, truncheons were used and to declare opposition, a monastery was occupied, too. At present, approx. 2.000 monks live on Mount Athos.
Apart from that, the monasteries around the holy Mount Athos are worth seeing. They house art historically unique objects, such as icons, manuscripts, frescoes and relics. The monasteries are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The steep northern flanks of the 2,000 m high Mount Athos are visible over a long distance.

Ca. 2.000 Mönche leben derzeit in Athos.
