From Bodiam station to Bodiam Castle
We stride out in the direction of the castle which is just a short walk from the station over this old stone bridge with wonderful views across the countryside.
Built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dallingridge, the castle is encompassed by an impressive moat with the biggest carp I have ever seen. Some were two or three times bigger than the Mallards that swam above them. I can’t begin to imagine what live was once like for the knights and ladies who once walked within these walls. And how many servants did it take to run it? What feasts must have been held here once upon a time. The castle fell into disrepair and became uninhabitable in the English Civil Wars but thanks to Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India (amongst others) its exterior was restored. The Viceroy left Bodiam Castle to the National Trust in 1926.

We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the castle and the fabulous views from on top of the towers including the one above which shows hops growing, just as they have done here for hundreds of years. You can also see the tops of three conical-shaped roofs on the horizon. This is an oast house where the hops were dried. Although no longer used for this, these building are still a common sight in Kent and East Sussex where there was once a thriving brewing industry. There’s plenty to see outside the castle but it wasn’t long before the tea rooms were calling us. We had a tasty and inexpensive lunch. The homemade cakes there looked delicious

GREAT DIXTER:
Made famous by Christopher Lloyd - raised and died at Great Dixter - one of the most remarkable gardener and brilliant garden writer. His father, Nathaniel Lloyd, bought the estate in 1910 and with the help of the renowned architect Sir Edwin Luthens he extended the house and laid out the new garden in the Arts and Crafts spirit. In 1954, Christopher Lloyd returns to Great Dixter perpetually creating new test-beds for new plants and new arrangements. His Long Border (4.5m deep and 60m long) is 'an exuberant, constantly changing array of plants, with foliage of different kinds, and a very long season of interest, at least from April to October' (Taylor, 2008, p:126). One of the greatest charms of Great Dixter is the mixture of formality and informality as Lloyd respected good ideas from the past but also looked into the future, pioneering a new taste for dramatic and brilliant. The gardens exhibits several meadow-like areas with countless crocus, primroses, quamash, snake's head, narcissus; the tropical garden showing 'cannas, brilliant dahlias, tender hedychiums and bananas, and New Zealand flax, all revealed through diaphanous veils f tall Verbena bonariensis.
BODIAM CASTLE:
One of the most famous and evocative castles in Britain, Bodiam was built in 1385 as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the moat. Enough of the interior survives to give an impression of castle life. There are spiral staircases and battlements to explore, and wonderful views of the Rother Valley from the top of the towers. In the impressive gatehouse is the castle's original wooden portcullis, an extremely rare example of its kind.
