Shopping in Tokyo: Where to find the most unique items
One of the most fun parts of traveling a foreign country is shopping and checking out the products that might be completely different than those in your country. Fashion, lifestyle items, hobby supplies, things only available in Japan. Shopping in Tokyo is a lot of fun! The variety of goods is amazing...be careful not to break the bank!
◆ ◆ ◆
◆ ◆ Tokyo's prettiest luxury shopping street Marunouchi-Naka-Dori
Marunouchi-Naka-Dori near Tokyo Station is - in addition to Ginza - one of Tokyo's most luxurious shopping streets.
Especially in winter when the golden illuminations decorate the trees along the avenue it's fun to stroll around.
Since the summer of 2015, Marunouchi-Naka-Dori has become a pedestrian heaven, so no cars during daytime! As a result, the noise of cars and the city has decreased quite a bit, and the number of street cafes has increased. Not only famous international brands but also many Japanese high-brand stores gather here. You'll find exquisite fashion and lifestyle items that can only be purchased here.
◆ ◆ A bookworm's heaven: bookstore town Jimbocho
With about 200 bookstores Jimbocho area is the largest book town in Tokyo. Most of the bookstores focus on old books. They also sell authentic old maps and woodblock prints - called nishiki-e or hanga. You also find a lot of old magazines, movie posters and movie scripts, which also look nice when used as interior decoration items.
Some of the bookstores have specialized in Japanese manga, art books, or even architecture related books.
In the backstreets, you find cozy retro cafes where you can relax and read the books you purchased.
◆ ◆ Ogawamachi, a district specializing in sporting goods
Ogawamachi is all about sports. There are about 100 shops!
If you plan to go on a skiing trip to Japan, don't forget to stop by. You will find everything you need here.
Of course, there are many other shops, too, dealing products other than winter sporting goods.
For example, if you enjoy running, you can get perfectly fitted shoes. Staff will measure the size of your feet and give you advice about the best option for your feet. Some shops even offer customized shoes meaning you can choose your favorite color and design!
◆ ◆ ◆
Chiyoda ward in the center of Tokyo is a great place to go on a shopping spree. Whether you want to buy a gift for yourself or a gift for your family and friends, in this area, you'll find what you're looking for!

Our first stop is for tonkatsu- breaded, deep fried pork cutlets which are a must eat when in Japan. Ponchi-ken hold a Michelin Bib Gourmand 2017 award for their Okinawan pork cutlets which are breaded in a light panko crumb and deep fried to golden perfection. The pork is juicy and flavoursome and together with the accompanying rice and fresh, shredded cabbage, makes for a memorable meal. We suggest visiting at lunch time when the prices are more affordable for their rosu katsu set meal and where their katsu curry is on offer. Tonkatsu, half a soft boiled egg, piles of thinly shaved cabbage, pickles, rice and a thick, spicy curry sauce that will have you weeping with pleasure. Don't miss this!
We then head to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant for a sushi feast. Sushi trains can be a really affordable way to enjoy sushi in a city where it can be one of the most expensive meals to eat. Hanamaru balances affordability with excellent quality fish. It's said that Hanamaru (fish) buyers are so well respected in the trade that they have special access to top quality fish at Tsukiji fish market. The restaurant is located on the tenth floor of the Tokyu Plaza building in Ginza so you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city whilst you dine. Their aburi salmon, roasted eel and fatty minced tuna sushi are especially worth eating. English menus are provided and staff are very friendly.
Where we ate:
Tonkatsu and katsu kare at Ponchi-ken, 2-8 Kanda-Ogawamachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Open Mon to Tue 11:15am to 3:00pm; Wed to Sat 11:15am to 2:00pm, 5:30pm-9:00pm / closed Sun and 3rd Mon of every month

Combine sightseeing with running - try the Tokyo Imperial Palace running route!
◆ ◆ Do you enjoy running? If so, why don't you try the running route around Tokyo Imperial Palace and make some special memories of your Japan trip?
The Imperial Palace running course is suited even for beginners since one lap around the palace is roughly 5 kilometers. The course has a lot of sightseeing spots to offer. The lush greenery is beautiful in every season. Also, there are no traffic lights on the outer circumference, so you can run nonstop. With many support facilities specialized on runners' needs, it's no wonder this is the most popular running route in Tokyo.
◆ ◆ Use a runners station!
If your accommodation or hotel is too far away from the Imperial Palace, or if you don't want to go back to the hotel to take a shower after running, use a runners support facility like JOGLIS! These facilities have lockers and showers, but also offer rental shoes and wear. So, if you suddenly feel like running: no problem!

◆ ◆ Join a running tour: Imperial Palace Tourism Running Tour!
There are many touristic sights in the area around the Imperial Palace. Famous spots are Nijubashi (= the two bridges at one of the entrances of the palace), the historic Sakurada Gate, and Chidori-ga-fuchi, which is one of the most popular cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo.
When participating in the Imperial Palace Sightseeing Running Tour you catch two birds with one stone. Stay healthy and do some sightseeing at the same time! English speaking volunteers called OMOTENASHI Runners offer tourism guides for domestic and foreign visitors while running together around the Imperial Palace. They will do their best to show you the best sights and explain the charm of the Imperial Palace.
The Imperial Palace Sightseeing Running Tours will start this spring! For further details, please contact the OMOTENASHI Runner Association of Japan or JOGLIS (mentioned above).

◆ ◆ Are there any rules?
When running around the Imperial Palace please watch out for pedestrians. The course around the palace isn't only for runners. Bikes and pedestrians are allowed, too. The most important rule is regarding the running direction: everyone is running counterclockwise. Since this running course is very popular and a lot of people are running here at every time of the day (and even at night), running in the same directs prevents accidents and bumping into other runners.
Another important thing to know is that there are no running areas at the main sightseeing spots since they tend to be very crowded. One example is Nijubashi Bridge. Of course, it is possible to around these areas - but then you would miss out on the best locations.

◆ ◆ Buy new running shoes
If you want to buy your own running shoes, the best place to go is sporting goods town Kanda Ogawamachi! There are a bunch of shops specialized in sporting goods, so you will definitely find the perfect shoes for your individual needs. S'PORT MIZUNO offers a shoe fitting service. It's a great place to buy good quality shoes from a Japanese brand. Wouldn't that make a great souvenir?
