150 Dollars Sukiyaki - My Private Tokyo

You can also get all the information about my secret places by becoming a patron on Patreon. See link below or in the banner. My patrons actually got the information and a longer video of this place 2 days ago.
I haven't been able to add music to this video as I wanted to, but I think it is worth uploading as the images talk for themselves!
I keep this place secret as it is a very traditional place that does not have so many seats. It was opened more than a 100 years ago and has not changed a bit. It is a 2 to 3 months waiting list to get a table... or should I say kotatsu in a private room!
In such restaurants, a Nakai takes care of the guests during the whole meal and cooks for them. It is so much better to have a specialist cook for you than making the sukiyaki yourself. They just know how to do everything with the right timing and serve you all of the ingredients perfectly cooked.
A Nakai is a lady who takes care of the guests at a restaurant or a hotel. She is the lady who will welcome you at the hotel, take you to your room and attend on you during your whole stay. At the restaurant, she is the one who will cook for you if necessary and attend on all your needs.
A Japanese meal is usually ended with starch such as rice, udon or other noodles. It is called shime 〆 or 締め the meals closing.
Usually, Sukiyaki shime is udon but here, they make ojiya which is rice cooked in the remaining broth of the hot pot. The rice soaks in all of the umami of the broth and it turns out so delicious. It is always a favorite. I must say that I usually cannot wait for the meal's shime. It might be the part that I enjoy most!
This was a 150 dollars meal. It is not cheap but worth it seeing the quality of the ingredients and considering the fact that the Nakai cooked for us the whole evening!
I hope you enjoyed these images :-)

Exploring Shimokitazawa (and more!) | 24hrs in Tokyo
This is the last video from my January 2019 trip to Tokyo! My sister had to fly back to America on Sunday afternoon, leaving me with 24hrs to do WHATEVER I wanted in Tokyo. So, here's what I did.
Places mentioned in this video:
1. Ichiran Shinbashi (Ramen)
Address: 〒105-0004 Tokyo, Minato City, Shinbashi, 2 Chome−8−8 からす亭ビルB1F
Notes: This is the famous eat-by-yourself-in-a-booth ramen restaurant. I believe they've expanded out to the U.S. too? But, it's really good and I recommend getting the egg (たまご)!
2. Bio Ojiyan Cafe
Address: 5 Chome-35-25 Daita, 世田谷区 Setagaya City, Tokyo 155-0033
Notes: The perfect place if you're looking for a meal that is filling but not heavy. Going here has made me want to try to replicate this dish at home. Ojiya is similar to a rice porridge, but is extremely flavorful. (In the video I ordered the medium size and added an egg and kimchi!)
3. Shirohige's Cream Puff Shop
Address: 5-chōme-3-1 Daita, Setagaya City, Tōkyō-to 155-0033
The cream puffs speak for themselves! You can take some to go from the bakery on the first floor, or head up to the second floor to eat in their cafe. Original custard and chocolate are available year-round, but they also have seasonal flavors! (In the video I ordered an Early Grey tea and a Strawberry Totoro Cream Puff!)
Shimokitazawa is a cool place to explore if you're into thrift shopping! It also has many cool cafes and restaurants, and because it is a little out of the way of the more popular Tokyo destinations (ie. Shibuya, Ginza, Shinjuku, etc.), it's less crowded.
Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed, and please subscribe!

About Koi Fish
Koi (鯉?, English /ˈkɔɪ/, Japanese: [koꜜi]) or more specifically nishikigoi (錦鯉?, [niɕi̥kiꜜɡo.i], literally brocaded carp), are a group of fish that are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.
Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
Carp are a large group of fish originally found in Central Europe and Asia. Various carp species were originally domesticated in East Asia, where they were used as food fish. Carp are coldwater fish, and their ability to survive and adapt to many climates and water conditions allowed the domesticated species to be propagated to many new locations, including Japan. Natural color mutations of these carp would have occurred across all populations. Carp were first bred for color mutations in China more than a thousand years ago, where selective breeding of the Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) led to the development of the goldfish.
The common carp was aquacultured as a food fish at least as long ago as the fifth century BC in China, and in the Roman Empire during the spread of Christianity in Europe. Common carp were bred for color in Japan in the 1820s, initially in the town of Ojiya in the Niigata prefecture on the northeastern coast of Honshu island. By the 20th century, a number of color patterns had been established, most notably the red-and-white Kohaku. The outside world was not aware of the development of color variations in koi until 1914, when the Niigata koi were exhibited at an annual exposition in Tokyo. From that time, interest in koi spread throughout Japan. It was from this original handful of koi that all other Nishikigoi varieties were bred, with the exception of the Ogon variety (single colored, metallic koi) which was developed relatively recently.
The hobby of keeping koi eventually spread worldwide. Koi are now sold in many pet aquarium shops, with higher-quality fish available from specialist dealers.
Extensive hybridization between different populations has muddled the historical zoogeography of the common carp. However, scientific consensus is that there are at least two subspecies of the common carp, one from Western Eurasia (Cyprinus carpio carpio) and another from East Asia (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus). One recent study on the mitochondrial DNA of various common carp indicate that koi are of the East Asian subspecies.[6] However, another recent study on the mitochondrial DNA of koi have found that koi are descended from multiple lineages of common carp from both Western Eurasian and East Asian varieties. This could be the result of koi being bred from a mix of East Asian and Western Eurasian carp varieties, or being bred exclusively from East Asian varieties and being subsequently hybridized with Western Eurasian varieties (the butterfly koi is one known product of such a cross). Which is true has not been resolved.
Etymology
The word koi comes from Japanese, simply meaning carp. It includes both the dull grey fish and the brightly colored varieties. What are known as koi in English are referred to more specifically as nishikigoi in Japan (literally meaning brocaded carp). In Japanese, koi is a homophone for another word that means affection or love; koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan.
