A Day in Opunake, Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 56: Today we are exploring the Taranaki town of Opunake! Join us on the Opunake Walkway as part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand!
Yesterday - Day 55 -
Tomorrow – Day 57 –
About this video:
Today we are in the South Taranaki town of Opunake, New Zealand! We figure that the best way to explore the town is by taking the Opunake Walkway!
We start the Opunake Walkway within the town itself, colourful with murals and a quirky cinema. We then head toward a lake and the Opunake Walkway takes us around the perimeter of the lake. We then follow a river and out onto the sensation Opunake Coastline. We follow the rugged Opunake Coastline with epic views of Mt Taranaki on one side and crashing waves on the other.
Luckily, the Opunake Walkway is right next to the Opunake Holiday Park on the beachfront, so we head back down to the Opunake Beach. The weather is too grim for surfing today, but we loved doing the Opunake Walkway to get a great sense of Opunake and its surroundings.
So what do you think of Opunake? Would you stop by while doing a road trip in New Zealand? Let us know in the comments below!

About this video:
It’s time to finally have a walkabout in the city of New Plymouth, Taranaki. We begin at our accommodation at the Ducks & Drakes Backpackers and head onto the streets of New Plymouth to explore the city.
We head down to the awesome Pukekura Park with waterfalls, bush walks, lakes, birds and so many things to see. We spend a lot of time wandering around Pukekura Park in New Plymouth, Taranaki.
As well as Pukekura Park, we also check out the wonderful street art of New Plymouth in Taranaki. The city is full of vibrant art which keeps our spirits high even when it is raining on our paper map... Rain and paper maps do not mix.
We attempt to take a bus back into New Plymouth, but when the bus doesn’t stop for us, a friendly local stops by and gives us a lift. How nice!

Exploring Stratford in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 52: Today we are heading into Stratford in Taranaki to explore the town that calls itself the Shakespeare Town of New Zealand!
Yesterday - Day 51 -
Tomorrow – Day 53 –
About this video:
Today we are continuing our trip around the Taranaki region of New Zealand by checking out the town of Stratford. Stratford is famous for being the Shakespeare town of New Zealand thanks to street names after various characters from Shakespeare, as well as the Stratford Glockenspiel that does a performance four times a day.
First thing we do when we arrive in Stratford in Taranaki is check out the famous Stratford Glockenspiel for ourselves. It does a performance of Romeo and Juliet every day at 10m, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm. You can find the Stratford Glockenspiel right in the centre of Stratford.
After that, we look around a few shops and art galleries then settle in cafe in Stratford called Cafe x.o.x which is super quirky and a great way to stay out of the rain.
Finally, we check in at the Stratford Holiday Park before making our way to some walks around the Patea River including a swing bridge.
So what do you think of Stratford in Taranaki? Let us know in the comments below!

5 Things To Do In Taranaki
Hey what's up everyone, this week I traveled to Taranaki on the West Coast of New Zealand. In 2017 this region was named the second best region in the world to visit by Lonely Planet. I had 36 hours on the ground and pretty crappy weather. So instead of scaling Mount Taranaki and/or checking out their coastal walkway on my electric skateboard, I decided to visit five or so places that didn't require fine weather.
The top 5 locations were:
1. The Govett Brewster / Len Lye Art Gallery,
2. Pukekura Park,
3. Dawson Falls,
4. Normanby Dam,
5. The Surf Highway.
I also visited:
6. Paritutu Rock,
7. The Cape Egmont Lighthouse & Lighthouse Museum,
8. The Puke Ariki Museum, and
9. A small portion of the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway.

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today’s plan was to get some big air in Wanaka by doing a skydive but when it is cancelled due to bad weather we decide to do the best thing on a rainy day in Wanaka, The AirShed!
The AirShed is a skate park in Wanaka, trampoline park, climbing wall and airbag facility in Wanaka where skiers, snowboarders, surfers and skaters come to learn big air tricks, while kids jump around on the trampolines. We can’t do much ourselves, but Aaron the owner of AirShed, teaches Laura how to do a back flip for the first time!
We have a great time messing amount on the huge trampolines, trying out some skateboards, rock climbing on the Wanaka climbing wall. And discovering this hidden gem of excitement in Wanaka.
So what do you think of The AirShed? Would you consider stopping by on your travels in Wanaka? Let us know in the comments.

Day 31 - Hot Water Beach to Auckland
Transcript, credits + links
On the last day of our trip we visited Thames - the small town where I went to high school, then drove back to Auckland and said goodbye to our motorhome.
We were planning to visit the place where I grew up in Tapu Valley - but had to change our route because of the cyclone. So that's a story for another day.
Thank you for joining us on our New Zealand tour. I hope you enjoyed it :)
We'll be back with the regular show soon.

Day 12 - Kaikoura to Christchurch
Transcript, credits + links
Day 12 was cold and, at times, depressing. The highlight was finding a cool bar called Goodbye Blue Monday. Sadly, that bar has now closed. We also had a look at my old flat and the place I used to work in 1999. I also tried to find a restaurant called Mainstreet, but it seemed to have disappeared. (Does anyone from Chch know what happened to Mainstreet? Did it close? Move? When?)
We also changed motorhomes. From day 1, we had this motorhome:
From day 12, we changed to this one:
Pretty much the same ... but the new one is longer, has another seat/bed, DVD player/screen, 4 elements etc.
