Exploring Stratford in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 52: Today we are heading into Stratford in Taranaki to explore the town that calls itself the Shakespeare Town of New Zealand!
Yesterday - Day 51 -
Tomorrow – Day 53 –
About this video:
Today we are continuing our trip around the Taranaki region of New Zealand by checking out the town of Stratford. Stratford is famous for being the Shakespeare town of New Zealand thanks to street names after various characters from Shakespeare, as well as the Stratford Glockenspiel that does a performance four times a day.
First thing we do when we arrive in Stratford in Taranaki is check out the famous Stratford Glockenspiel for ourselves. It does a performance of Romeo and Juliet every day at 10m, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm. You can find the Stratford Glockenspiel right in the centre of Stratford.
After that, we look around a few shops and art galleries then settle in cafe in Stratford called Cafe x.o.x which is super quirky and a great way to stay out of the rain.
Finally, we check in at the Stratford Holiday Park before making our way to some walks around the Patea River including a swing bridge.

A Day in Opunake, Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 56: Today we are exploring the Taranaki town of Opunake! Join us on the Opunake Walkway as part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand!
Yesterday - Day 55 -
Tomorrow – Day 57 –
About this video:
Today we are in the South Taranaki town of Opunake, New Zealand! We figure that the best way to explore the town is by taking the Opunake Walkway!
We start the Opunake Walkway within the town itself, colourful with murals and a quirky cinema. We then head toward a lake and the Opunake Walkway takes us around the perimeter of the lake. We then follow a river and out onto the sensation Opunake Coastline. We follow the rugged Opunake Coastline with epic views of Mt Taranaki on one side and crashing waves on the other.
Luckily, the Opunake Walkway is right next to the Opunake Holiday Park on the beachfront, so we head back down to the Opunake Beach. The weather is too grim for surfing today, but we loved doing the Opunake Walkway to get a great sense of Opunake and its surroundings.
So what do you think of Opunake? Would you stop by while doing a road trip in New Zealand? Let us know in the comments below!

Grant's Getaways: Most Dangerous Bar
It's one of the most dangerous places on the planet and the Columbia River Bar is often termed the Graveyard of the Pacific. Here, the wind, weather and ocean conditions can change in a heartbeat and it becomes a place where mistakes can mean disaster. In nearby Astoria, visitors gain a new respect for the dangerous bar indoors on a visit to the Columbia River Maritime Museum. The center tells many stories that surround the place where the mighty Columbia meets the sea; historic tales of development following Lewis and Clark's exploration -- the transport of goods, the salmon fishing industries, the timber mill industries, the US Coast Guard -- Oregon history is are all here and set against the dramatic backdrop of the Columbia River.
Māori Magic: World's Hottest Meal
Our lunchtime feast of green-lipped mussels, prawns and corn is cooked in the steaming geothermal waters of Ngararatuatara, the world's most unusual — and hottest — cooking cauldron, at Te Puia, New Zealand's Māori Arts & Crafts Institute. See the chef sweat; hear why the boiling spring is named for a native lizard; savor beer made from a traditional Māori medicinal plant.
Kai Iwi Beach, Whanganui, New Zealand
A great place for a family get-away, Kai Iwi Beach has a fantastic children’s playground, complete with a flying fox over a stream, pirate climbing ship, and more… There is a large toilet block with changing rooms, cold water showers, and wood burning BBQ’s as well. Kai Iwi Beach has it all, and has been a favourite with locals and tourists for generations! There is also a well-established motor camp located in the Mowhanau village. Read more:
