Golden sands Bulgaria 1965. Златни пясъци, Zlatni pyasatsi.
This film belongs to ‘British Pathe News.’ Golden Sands (Bulgarian: (Златни пясъци, Zlatni pyasatsi) is a major seaside resort town on the northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, about 16 km from the big town of Varna. I’d have loved to seen this beautiful place back then as portrayed in this 1965 film, Resort development began in the late 1950s and was privatized after the communists lost control .this is an excerpt from a British Pathe film about ‘Bulgaria’. I have been to this beautiful place on many occasions mainly the mid-80s to early 90s when it was part of the communist bloc. It has changed dramatically since then, the 1990s seen huge investment that swept away most of the old hotels although most have been rebuilt to modern standards and retained the same names. I then stayed at the ‘Metropol, Luna, International and Shipka . Back in 1988 the most popular tourist was the Germans most likely due them controlling Bulgaria during WW2. The hotels catered for their gourmet desires much more than the English speaking tourists, to get roast chicken and chips was not easy lol, some of the waitresses would have escorted us to our tables and announced “Tonight you will have chicken” which of course was a big fib as it was the usual pork steaks that were delicious served with many side dishes, starters would have been Shopka salad with goats cheese. The currency was the ‘Lev’ prices were so cheap for everything it was hard to not come home with lots of unspent cash. There was an official exchange rate for the Lev and an unofficial rate which was usually 2 or 3 times the official rate so the only time the official rate would have been used would have been 1st time in the country until you got to know the ropes. The unofficial currency changer would have been the lifeguard on the beach or someone pointed out as trustworthy, a blind eye was turned on this practice. The sandy beaches are almost pure golden quartz, long and wide with many hotels fronting onto the beaches. The ubiquitous ‘Stasti ‘ type police were always hovering about policing and bullying the hotel staff in case they were enticed to escape to the free west and tell secrets lol. The Bulgarian secret services were very hard-core and much feared around the world, they were more KGB than the then Russian KGB the waiters and waitresses were usually quizzed about any conversations with patrons. They were a damn arrogant nuisance.(Stasi).This little film is for all who were captured by the ambiance of that era in this beautiful place.
