[NENG NOW]-HD:This Used to be a Refugee Camp.4/4/2019
Where I was born no longer exists…but I still came back to the physical place it once stood. Chiang Kham Refugee Camp. I'll remember this as the conclusion to the beginning of my life. So even though I will never see the actual house I was born in, I leave happy.
Thailand is a great place – and I honestly mean that. If it weren’t for its relative high political stability and economic status in Southeast Asia, I would not have been born in Thailand to begin with…and thus not have any chance to end up in the USA. The reason Thailand continues to be the refuge for many refugees, even today from Myanmar, is because of this. In a perfect world, there would be no refugee camps, or an the very least, refugees would be granted immediate and full asylum…but we’ve still a long way to go for that. So for that, I am thankful Thailand exists.
Chiang Kham is a couple hours south of Phu Chi Fa mountain, sitting close to the border of Laos. When my family crossed the Mekong, they went to Nong Khai, then Vinai, then Chiang Kham, and finally, Pah Na refugee camp before coming to the USA. In the short weeks I was here, I raced to visit family, see my Chiang Kham, and still try to have fun…so I’ve yet to visit what remains of the other 3…but I know I’ll be back to Thailand soon – for all its beauty, for all its history, for all pieces of my heart I’ve now left here
