Archaeological Site of Philippi - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Archaeological Site of Philippi is a fascinating and thought-provoking UNESCO World Heritage Site. Named for King Phillip II of Macedon, who conquered an existing settlement and named it for himself, it's closely connected to many famous figures of antiquity. In addition to being named for Alexander the Great's father, Caesar's assassins fought (and lost) their final battle against Caesar's heirs just outside the city walls. Later, in the Byzantine era, the city became an important pilgrimage town as the Apostle Paul had preached here at one point. It's also reputedly the site of the first church in Europe, and the first baptisms in Europe as well.

Jan. 11: Today we visit the traditional site of Lydia's baptism, then the ancient city of Philippi where Paul was imprisoned and a jailor's family was baptized. Then on to Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece and home to the Thessaloniki Archeological Museum and the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Demetrius.

The best of Filippi/Philippi Archaeological Site: Part 2
To repeat: The ancient site of Filippi/Philippi is the most most important archaeological site in Eastern Macedonia. However, soon after its establishment the town was threatened by the Thracians (365 BC) and the people of Thasos asked King Philip II for help. King Philip was no dummy! He conquered, fortified, and renamed the city after himself. It could take days to thoroughly cover the entire area and for brevity sake and interest, here are more of the most interesting places we saw in the Greco-Roman and Christian sections.
My standout was the Public Toilets in the Palaestra (gym) area, otherwise known the Vespasians, after Emperor Vespasian who imposed a tax on them. Only these toilets still remain and what a sight this public restroom is with seats for 42 people at the same time! Wealthy Romans would have their slaves sit on the cold marble to warm the throne before sitting down it. Can you imagine the sight...and smell of 42 people sitting tush-to-tush?
