Day 73: Today we are looking for free things to do in Wellington and we find the Taua Tapu Track in Plimmerton! Join us for this free bush walk in Wellington for backpackers!

Today we are in Plimmerton, Wellington staying in the lovely Moana Lodge backpackers. We notice a sign at the hostel reception for a free thing to do in Wellington right behind the Moana Lodge hostel – the Taua Tapu Track!
We gear up and head around the back of the hostel in Plimmerton, Wellington to start the Taua Tapu Track which leads us to a native forest. We follow the Taua Tapu Track in Plimmerton up to a viewpoint of the Plimmerton coastline and Wellington suburb.
The Taua Tapu Track loops through the streets of Plimmerton in Wellington and back to the coastline where we check out the rock pools and admire the view of Mana Island in the distance.
On the Taua Tapu Track in Plimmerton on our way back to Moana Lodge, we are followed by some seagulls but find refuge in the Moana Lodge.

Today we are checking out an awesome free thing to do on the Kapiti Coast, walking in Queen Elizabeth Park. We head to Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti which is just off the main highway in New Zealand to walks through rolling sand dunes with regenerating vegetation on them.
Along the sand dunes in Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti is a long stretching beach with awesome views of Kapiti Island out to sea. We head down to the beach to capture some photos and get some awesome views around Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast.
After struggling our way back up onto the sand dunes in Queen Elizabeth Park, we continue on the loop back around to the start with our shoes full of sand but still feeling epic after our walk in Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti.
Our day ends with a barbeque back at Moana Lodge in Plimmerton where we are staying for a couple of days as we explore the Kapiti Coast and the Wellington suburbs.

Day 72: Today we are heading to Adrenalin Forest in Wellington to climb among the trees! It’s an awesome thing to do in Wellington as part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities!

Today we are climbing among the trees of Adrenalin Forest in Wellington. Adrenalin Forest is a huge obstacle course in the trees with ziplines, climbing, crawling, swinging and so much more! Adrenalin Forest is a high wire obstacle course in New Zealand.
We head on over to Adrenalin Forest in Wellington to be given a safety briefing on how to use the harnesses on the tree top course. Then we are on our way gaining height with each stage. Trouble is, Robin is petrified of heights so the higher we go in Adrenalin Forest, the more Robin starts shitting his breaches.
The great thing about Adrenalin Forest in Wellington is that you have 3 hours to do as much as you can – that’s plenty enough time to complete the all the Adrenalin Forest courses slowly. For a price under NZ$50, we are not complaining.
Adrenalin Forest is an awesome thing to do in Wellington in New Zealand if you are looking for an active and challenging activity that is great value for money.

Day 70: This morning we clay bird shooting at Makoura Lodge before hitting the road to our next New Zealand destination. It’s part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities.

This morning we are squeezing in one last activity before we leave the awesome adventure lodge of Makoura Lodge. We are doing clay bird shooting at Makoura Lodge in Manawatu.
As soon as we wake up we meet one of our Makoura Lodge hosts for a round of clay bird shooting. It’s the first time we are firing a shotgun and we get full training from our Makoura Lodge host. We have about 10 clay birds to shoot so the competition is on to see who can shoot the most clay birds!
It’s an awesome way to end out time at Makoura Lodge before moving onto our next New Zealand destination, Plimmerton on the outskirts of Wellington.
The road to Plimmerton takes us through the Manawatu region with some stunning scenery of rolling green hills – classic New Zealand scenery as if we were in Middle-earth. We reach Plimmerton just in time to watch the sunset on the beach.

Riding Behind Ab 663 On The Castlecliff Industrial Line
(New Zealand) An 'Ab' class steam locomotive ventures along the Castlecliff Line, the first Ab to do so since 1966.
Ab 663 (normally based at the 'Mainline Steam' depot in Plimmerton) visited Wanganui for a Paddles & Steam weekend with a trainset borrowed from 'Fielding Steam & Rail'. While in Wanganui, it ran three short excursion trips for locals including a trip on the Castlecliff Industrial Line.
This video was filmed from the open platform of the guards van behind the tender of the locomotive as the train travelled from the Wanganui Freight Yard to a loop at 'Molten Metals' a distance of just over 4 km.
(It was a joke among the locals that 663 was off to the scrap yard!)
The locomotive's presence in the town created much excitement.
Normally the Castlecliff line is used by plain looking container trains hauled by diesel-electric locomotives. So it was a thrilling sight to see a steam locomotive and some passenger cars on this recently reopened branch line.
Many people lined their home's front porches and driveways to witness something completely different passby through their suburb.
The line is made up of light 57 pound rail in some places with heavier 70 & 85 pound rail on some of the curves. There is an overall speed restriction of 25 km/hr in place.
Ab 663 represents the heaviest steam locomotive class to have worked on the line in the age of steam.
There were some notable firsts achieved with the train in this video;
-This is the first excursion train on the branch since Easter 1993. (on that occasion Dc 4369 was accompaning the old 'Capital Connection' set)
-Ab 663 is the first steam locomotive to travel this branch since F 163 was in town in November 1990.
-This was the first excursion on this line since the line's rehabilitation in 2011. (The line had been mothballed since 2002)
-BUT the big piece of news that was on everybody's lips today, was that this was the first visit by an 'Ab' Class Pacific locomotive on the Castlecliff line since about 1966.
The roads were busy with heaps of public finding vantage points along the line to enjoy the simple past time of watching a train roll by. A younger generation happily held their iphone cameras towards the steam visitor.
Today's visit by 663 was an experience to remember and was history in the making.
