- Kap Kaliakra
- Thrakische Klippen (Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort)
- Botanischer Garten in Balchik

Bulgaria was more memorable than I anticipated. From Edirne, Turkey, I caught a bus to Plovdiv where I enjoy a few days walking around the beautiful city center of former Philippopolis. I walked through the city center and up to Nebet Tepe, ancient ruins that overlook the whole city. I took the train to Asenovgrad where I walked up to Assen's Fortress for nice views of the mountain and beyond. My airbnb was also the first place where I tried Rakia, an alcoholic drink you can find all over the Balkans.
After a nice slow and beautiful train ride, I found myself in the capital city of Sofia. I spend about two hours walking around checking out the numerous churches scattered around the city. I joined up with a local couchsurfer into his home playing a quick game of bomb defuse.
A whole month of travel went by and had yet to hike in nature. I spent a whole day hiking up nearby Vitosha mountain to the local waterfalls. Two hours into the hike I made my way to my destination.
After spending hours of research trying to find my way to Belogradchik, I made my way there late in the day to enjoy relaxation in a cheap hotel. Early next morning, I made my way to the beautiful Belogradchik Fortress and Rocks for some unique and amazing panoramic views of the site and beyond. This place reminded me of Utah and the Flintstones combined.
Next city was Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital of the second Bulgarian empire, a beautiful hillside city overlooking a snakelike river. The city has a massive fortress which served as a stronghold for the capital for many years until it met it's demise to the Ottoman Turks. I spend a lot of time with my couchsurfing host and his friends hanging out at the park drinking beer, exchanging laughs, and having a good time.
After VT, I headed to Shumen where I couchsurfed again with an incredible host as well as his cat. :) I stopped here to see the massive 1300 years of Bulgaria Monument overlooking the city. I also had the pleasure of catching a ride with my host to the ancient Madara Rider carving as well as Pliska, the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire.
Lastly, I made my way over to the seaside town of Varna where I stayed in a decent priced studio. I spend a whole day walking around town until I met three cool Brazilian people and spend the rest of the day with them. Unfortunately, I didn't hitchhike like I thought I would to Constanta, Romania due to fear of being stranded. So instead, I caught a train to Ruse, the border town on the Danube and cross the border into Romania to Bucharest.
All in all, Bulgaria was an incredible country. While I saw quite a bit in Bulgaria, I did miss out on many things as well. Such as Vidin, Buzludzha, Rila Lakes, Rila Monastery, and some more hiking in the mountains. But, I know for a fact, I will return. Nazdrave!
