VENEZUELA: TINTORERO CRAFT FAIR
Spanish/Nat
Craftsmen and women from across Latin America are flocking to the western Venezuelan village of Tintorero to see one of the most important showcases for handmade goods in the region.
The Tintorero fair brings together some of the traditional skills from as far afield as Cuba, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Mexico.
The Tintorero fair is a Mecca for bargain hunters.
Tintorero is a village in the western Venezuelan state of Lara, long the centre of artisan textile production.
Age-old traditional crafts stand side by side with more up to date work.
SOUNDBITE:
We make these hand-crafted candles. They're candles that are decorative, aromatic, and some of them you could call ecological because they've got leaves and flowers on them.
SUPER CAPTION: Claudia Yepez, Venezuelan candle maker
Craft workers have come to Tintorero from across Latin America.
SOUNDBITE:
It's made out of hand-worked resin, consisting of resin and natural stones from Brazil.
SUPER CAPTION: Cesar P. Carmona, Brazilian craftsman
The visitors from abroad are clearly impressed by the quality of the local work.
SOUNDBITE:
As a foreigner I have the chance to see Venezuelan handicrafts and I must say there's great quality here. Quite as good as anything you might find in elsewhere in Latin America.
SUPER CAPTION: Ana Maria Gonzalez, Bolivian weaver
Many of the craft workers operate directly out of their homes.
The fair provides a good market for these cottage industries.
SOUNDBITE:
We make dominos. We make them out of wood. It's a very strong wood. We make them in the family.
SUPER CAPTION: Maribel Aranguren, Venezuelan craftworker
The fair's a place for learning as well as selling.
There are daily workshops and seminars by master artisans.
These help maintain and improve the standards of the work on display from year to year.
SOUNDBITE:
The Tintorero Fair, in its fifth edition, reaffirms what we have always said: it's a unique fair in Venezuela and in Latin America because the people taking part are the ones that actually make the merchandise, and it's just craft work.
SUPER CAPTION: Sidney de Arangueren, fair coordinator
Organisers are hoping to top last year's turnover of around 200-thousand (US) dollars.

UN FAMILY DAY - Patricia Infante
The International Day of Families is a UN day celebrated on May 15th. The topic revolves around families. This topic was highlighted for the first time during the 1980’s, as the United Nations started to evaluate issues that concerned this central structure of society. Later, in 1983, the Commission of Social Development passed a resolution on the role of family. This one urged the Secretary General to increase awareness on the issues regarding families, such as the lack of basic needs. The request also demanded decision makers to take a part on this by evaluating their decision with a focus on those matters.
Afterwards, another resolution regarding families was passed by the Council. This one invited the General Assembly to evaluate the inclusion of an item entitled ““Families in the development process” in its provisional agenda. This was also an intent to initiate awareness in the development of families. It was intended to reach governments, non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations, and the public.
Later, all States were invited to share their opinions on the possible creation of an International Day to commemorate families. In addition, a report regarding the multiple opinions and possible solutions was also requested. The solutions that were requested in the report were supposed to regard the multiple measures that could be taken to increase awareness and guarantee or improve the well-being of families across the world. Later on, the United Nations General Assembly would proclaim The International Year of the family and request its observance at different levels.
Finally, in 1994, the International Day of Families was proclaimed. It was stated that it would be annually celebrated every 15th of May. On this day, the international community should promote awareness of the social, demographic, and economic issues that affect families’ well-being. Activities and workshops are usually held to commemorate this day. Most countries recognize the family Day, such include USA, Canada, Venezuela, and South Africa. However, the relevance of such date varies across countries.
