For the first week of my time in Colombia I wanted to dive into the history and see the main sights in the colonial town of Cartagena, therefore I put together a list of the best things to do in Cartagena and went out to explore. Beyond the popular sights and touristic spots I found some great restaurants, went to a few picturesque Carribbean islands and discovered a beach town which is still fairly unknow by like minded people who are backpacking in Colombia.
From the historic city center to recommendable food places this video is meant to also help you find your way around and plan your stay in the area of Cartagena. All my tips can also be found on my website, this includes sights as well as restaurants and hotels in Cartagena.
In the next episode we are going to explore the various sights in and around the city of Medellin and take a look at the violent past of the country as well as at the transformation of it.
Things to do in Cartagena (Cololmbia) as shown in this episode:
Centro Historico / Old Town & Free Tour
Old City Wall / Walled City
Getsemani neighborhood
Volcano El Totumo
Castillo San Felipe de Barajas / Fortress of San Felipe
Paraiso Secreto on Isla Grande, Islas de Rosario
Rincon del Mar
Isla Mucura, Isla Tintipan, Islote at Islas de San Bernardo
— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

Church of San Felipe Neri (Oratorio de San Felipe de Neri) in Sucre, Bolivia
Church of San Felipe Neri (Oratorio de San Felipe de Neri) in Sucre, Bolivia
The Convent of San Felipe Neri is a neoclassical style church built between 1795 to 1799, by Friar Antonio de San José Alberto.
San Felipe Neri was built using stone from Mount Churuquella, and later covered with a layer of stucco. Originally a monastery, the convent now functions as an all-girls parochial school.
The entrance houses a painting of the last supper. inside, a flower-trimmed courtyard sits surrounded by two levels of white arched corridors. A large number of paintings from the 18th and 19th century adorn the inside of the monastery.
The main draw-card of San Felipe Neri is the excellent panoramic views of the city from the brick-floored rooftop and bell tower. For those after the view, but not willing to pay the entry fee, good views can be had from the rooftop of La Cite hostel or from Mooy bar.
Crypts below the convent hold the remains of important figures such as the last President of the Real Audiencia de Charcas and the last Archbishop of Charcas.
San Felipe Neri is open to the public from 2.30pm-6pm daily, except for Sundays. Entry is via the school entrance next-door (#165 Ortiz, marked “Maria Auxiliadora”). You may need to knock or ring the bell to get access. Admission costs 10Bs. The door to the rooftop is sometimes locked, so ask for the key before you head up.
