Zelenchuksky Churches in the Republic of Karachay Cherkessia
Arkhyz is a village in the valley of the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River, in the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, Greater Caucasus, Russia, about 70 km inland from the Black Sea shore.
The Zelenchuksky Churches are an archaeological preserve extending for 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) around the ruins of Nizhnearkhyzskoe gorodishche, tentatively identified as the medieval capital of Alania, a Christian state destroyed by the hordes of Möngke Khan in the 13th century. No Byzantine document mentions the name of this city, whereas al-Mas'udi refers to it as Ma'as, or Maghas.
The North Church is supposed to have been the cathedral of the diocese of Alania between the 10th and 13th centuries. The dome rises to a height of 21 meters; the western wall is twice as long. The narthex formerly contained a baptistery. A 19th-century traveller described the faded Byzantine frescoes that were still visible on its walls.
The Central Church appears to have been conceived somewhat earlier than the two others, in the form of a regular cross, but was extended to the west during or shortly following the construction. It is much larger than the South Church, which was built of coarse rubble masonry, extensively restored by the monks in 1899, fell into disuse during the Soviet years, and was reconsecrated to Saint Elijah in 1991. The South Church bears the distinction of being the oldest functioning church in all of Russia.

I bet not many of your friends have had the opportunity to travel here to Russia. It's a country that's been locked up for centuries but it's just starting to realise that people from right around the globe are just itching to come here and discover some of her incredible Secrets.
Our next port on our scenic adventure here in Russia is Goritsy.
It's really hard to picture life back when these villages of monasteries were in full swing but opening up your imagination is just part of Russia's charm and some of our stops are nearly impossible to believe, Kizhi island is a shrine to wood crafting over the centuries and if you think your wood whittling skills are impressive take a look at this.
It's incredible to think that the craftsman who built this place use nothing but timber. What's even more astounding is not one single nail was ever part of construction the skill of these ancient builders is mind-blowing and beautifully preserved on the island.
Legend has it that the single axe used to build the cathedral was tossed into the river never to be used again.
While Kizhi is all about timber and Drogi is all about village life there's two ways that you can get around Mandrogi. One is the traditional walking method and two is to hang out with Batili.
The island takes you back to the traditional trade roots of Russia and guess what there was vodka. Three thousand varieties of the stuff.
There's a whole range of local artwork being produced and a few visitors showing why they didn't live back in the Middle
Ages.
All this action can make a traveler very peckish so

Back on the mighty Scenic Tsar we learned some of the finer points about Russia's true passion. Vodka has been a Russian staple in one way or another since the 9th century and so there's no way you'll escape without this important history lesson.
Which somehow ends up as a Scenic bonding session and while all the action goes on inside the Scenic Tsar navigates its way through some of Russia's enormous inland lakes and on to our final stop of St. Petersburg.

Tbilisi Drone Flight: The Caucasus or Caucasia is an area situated between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and occupied by Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Russia. It is home to the Caucasus Mountains, including the Greater Caucasus mountain range, which has historically been considered a natural barrier between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Europes highest mountain, Mount Elbrus, at 5,642 metres is located in the west part of the Greater Caucasus mountain range. On the southern side, the Lesser Caucasus includes the Javakheti Plateau and grows into the Armenian highlands, part of which is located in Turkey. The Caucasus region is separated into northern and southern parts – the North Caucasus and Transcaucasus, respectively. The Greater Caucasus mountain range in the north is mostly shared by Russia and Georgia, as well as the northernmost parts of Azerbaijan. The Lesser Caucasus mountain range in the south is occupied by several independent states, namely, mostly by Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, but also extending to parts of northwestern Turkey, northern Iran and the partially recognised Artsakh Republic.
