In Nigeria, a state (Hausa: jiha, Igbo: ȯra, Yoruba: ìpínlẹ̀) is a federated political entity that shares sovereignty with the federal government. There are 36 states bound together by a federal agreement. The Federal Capital Territory is not a state and under the direct control of the federal government. The states are further divided into a total of 774 Local Government Areas.[1] Under the Nigerian Constitution, states have the power to ratify constitutional amendments.

Calabar, Canaan City in Nigeria, cross river state, electricity mast
Calabar (also referred to as Canaan City)[2] is a city in Cross River State, in south southern Nigeria. The original name for Calabar was Akwa Akpa, from the Efik language.[3][4] The city is adjacent to the Calabar and Great Kwa rivers and creeks of the Cross River (from its inland delta).
Calabar is the capital of Cross River State, and has often been described as the tourism capital of Nigeria.[5] Administratively, the city is divided into Calabar Municipal and Calabar South LGAs. The fans had gathered in a building to watch the Europa League match Manchester United-Anderlecht when the high-voltage mast switched over.
A witness tells the Nigerian Channels TV that the victims were electrocuted when the electricity cable was on the roof of the building.
How the mast could fall is not clear. One of the fans who survived the incident said to the Nigerian Daily Mail that a transformer housing was exploding in the neighborhood. He went outside because he heard a bang and then saw the mast falling over.Seaport City[edit]
Since the 16th century, Calabar had been a recognized international seaport, shipping out goods such as palm oil.[7] During the era of the Atlantic slave trade, it became a major port in the transportation of African slaves and was named Calabar by the Spanish. By the 18th century, most slave ships that transported slaves from Calabar were English, with around 85% of these ships being owned by Bristol and Liverpool merchants.[8] Old Calabar (Duke Town) and Creek Town, 10 miles northeast, were crucial towns in the trade of slaves in that era.[2] The first British warship to sail as far as Duke Town, where she captured seven Spanis
