Centuri is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. The village of Centuri is situated to the north-west of Cap Corse, and the Port de Centuri - the highlight of your visit - is a few kilometres along a winding road to the west. The port is the largest fishing port on Cap Corse
As with several of the highlights around Cap Corse (such as Barcaggio and Rogliano), you need to drive a few kilometres away from the main route around Cap Corse to reach the Port de Centuri. It is very worthwhile, however, so allow yourself enough time.
There is a large car park just before you reach the port, from where you can see the coastline and a small beach but little clue that one of the most attractive little fishing villages in Corsica is just round the corner. Not unlike Erbalunga in south-east Cap Corse, Centuri is a small and traditional fishing port. The port is surrounded by simple two storey buildings, many painted in pastel colours, which adds to its charm while numerous small fishing boats can be seen in the water.
We recommend you arrive at luchtime: wandering around the harbour doesn't take long but Centuri is a lovely place to sit in one of the restaurants overlooking the port while enjoying a slow Corsican lunch. Otherwise there is also a nice ice-cream shop in the harbour where you can easily pass 30 minutes. Just outside Centuri there is a small pebble beach - not perhaps the most exciting beach in Corsica, but very pleasant and with rocks to either side. Ideal for a siesta after enjoying your lunch in one of the restaurants in the port
Although most visitors never venture beyond the port, there are several historic monuments among the cluster of small villages that together make up Centuri. Thes include the neo-medieval style Château de Bellavista at Ortinola, built in the late 19th century, and the much older Tower-Castle at Merlacce. At Camera, back on the main Cap Corse coast road above Centuri, there is a group of buildings including the Church of Saint-Sylvester, an imposing belltower and a classical style chapel in a location with nice views out across the Mediterranean.
If you would like to see a more impressive beach you can continue to Barcaggio at the far north of the Cap Corse peninsula. The route, which also includes the small port at Tollare and some attractive scenery, is to the north of Ersa. Further east we also suggest you visit the group of hamlets that together make up the village of Rogliano.

Pietracorbara is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica.
Marine de Pietracorbara[modifier | modifier le code]
La Marina est un village récent, construit il y a un peu plus d'une centaine d'années, à l'embouchure du ruisseau de Pietracorbara (fiume Pietracorbara). Les quelques maisons qui existaient, avaient été ravagées en 1583 par les BarbaresquesNote 1.
Au xviiie siècle, elle était dite Marina di Sant' Antone, du nom de la chapelle qui y était bâtie près de l'embouchure du fiume Pietracorbara. En 1943, les Allemands détruisent la chapelle. À son emplacement, proche de la jonction des routes D80 et D232, un mémorial a été érigé. La marine est encore dite d'Ampuglia en souvenir de la cité de ce nom, ruinée et qui était située 350 m plus au nord.
La marine est dominée par la tour d'Ampuglia ou de Castellare, mais plus souvent dénommée Torre di l'Aquila.
Au nord de la plage de Pietracorbara, envahi par les roseaux, sont les salines et les ruines des antiques dépôts (magazzini) du port romain d'Ampuglia, ainsi que le hameau de Giunchi.

Ponticellu[modifier | modifier le code]
Tout proche de l'église paroissiale, le hameau de Ponticellu est constitué d'habitations disposées de part et d'autre de la route D232. Au centre du hameau, se situe sa jonction avec une courte route communale conduisant et se terminant au cœur du village d'Orneto.
À un kilomètre au sud de Ponticellu, en plein maquis, est la grotte de Corte souvent peu accessible car inondée.

Orneto est le lieu habité le plus remarquable avec sa tour d'habitation carrée en très bel état, abritant une petite chapelle Santa Catarina (Sainte Catherine d'Alexandrie) récemment repeinte couleur ocre rouge. On y trouve également la tour de Pizale, une tour carrée dominant le village du sommet d'une petite colline.
Orneto a compté jusqu'à neuf pressoirs à huile d'olive. Le village a été ravagé en 1583 par les Turcs.
Oreta[modifier | modifier le code]
Mairie
Oreta est un vieux village qui est le centre de la commune. S'y trouve la mairie (Casa comuna). Sa façade principale est ornée d'une plaque sculptée avec un buste et les inscriptions : « Giuliani Jean André 1851 - 1942 Généreux donateur de notre maison communale ».
S'y trouvent la chapelle Sant' Antone et une tour carrée ruinée en haut du village. Oreta aurait été fondé par les loretesi au xe siècle ; le village se nommait à l'époque Loreta.

Lake Comacchio is situated very close to the Adriatic Sea and the road cuts between the two. It is a narrow stretch of land, not much more than 1km wide. Formerly a swamp, much of the land has been drained for agricultural use, nonetheless I think that there must be a problem here with mosquitoes during the late spring and early summer. Malaria was once a major problem but has now been eradicated. I discuss a little of the historical implications of malaria during the drive. Whilst filming of this I got bitten.
It is an area popular with Italian tourists with many resorts along the coast.
I visited Comacchio in 1993 with a lady friend and it was one of the wierdest places I have ever been to. We went there as I had seen a programme about eel fishing on the lake and to try the local speciality. We felt that everyone was staring at us as though we were the unwelcome strangers in town. Not only us, but others we talked to felt the same.
The land here is so flat - who would believe that such a short time earlier I was in the mountains?
After its early occupation by the Etruscans and the Gauls, when the site lay on the main stream of the River Po, Comacchio was annexed by Rome. Under Emperor Augustus, who ruled Rome from 27 BCE to 14 CE, a canal was dug to deepen its lagoon. Part of the original wetlands were drained and divided among villae rusticae.
Comacchio enjoyed prosperity under the Goths and the Lombards, and became the seat of a Lombard duchy. It owed its fortunes to its salt pans and its strategic importance to its location: when the Lombard king Authari expanded the Lombard dominion at the expense of Byzantium, he took the fortress of Comacchio and cut off communication between Padua and Ravenna. When the Franks descended into northern Italy in 756, their king, Pepin the Short, included Comacchio in his famous donation of land to Pope Stephen II, a grant later confirmed by Pepin's son and successor, Charlemagne. In 854 Comacchio was sacked by their rivals in the salt trade, the Venetians, who laid it waste in 946. Saracen raiders burned the city in 876, but despite this Comacchio slowly recovered. The Holy See later acquired the city and presented it to the archbishopric of Ravenna.
In the 13th century, Emperor Rudolph I conferred it on Obizzo IV d'Este of Ferrara. In 1508 it became Venetian, but in 1597 was claimed by Clement VIII as a vacant fief. In 1598 the Papal States again acquired Comacchio and retained it until 1866 when it became a part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Since then, most of the swamp land has disappeared, leaving ground for the expansion of agriculture, and creating new zones for dwellings. Comacchio was once home to a factory for sugar refining, which closed in 1988. Comacchio and its seafront Lidi are a center for tourism.
