If you want to discover the coves and beaches of the Bay of Islands, Paihia is a good place to start. Cruises of all descriptions leave from the wharf daily year-round.
Paihia makes an excellent base for exploring the Bay of Islands. It has an extensive choice of accommodation and a good-sized town centre. From the wharf you can arrange a trip to the outer islands, hook into a fishing expedition or catch ferry to Russell.
Top local adventures include cruising to the ‘hole in the rock’ at the tip of Cape Brett, finding dolphins (and maybe swimming with them) and sea kayak tours. Paihia is also just down the road from the historic Treaty House at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, which marks the beginning of New Zealand as a nation. Just west of Paihia is Haruru, where you’ll find an impressive waterfall and a boardwalk.
Things to do in Russell, Bay of Islands
Russell is a quaint and historic town in the Bay of Islands, with lovely accommodation and an excellent range of restaurants. It is isolated on a narrow peninsula giving it an island ambience.
At the turn of the 19th century Russell then known as Kororareka was the first permanent European settlement and served as a shore station for whalers, a swashbuckling town full of whalers and sealers with a reputation as the ‘Hell Hole of the Pacific’. It was renamed Russell in 1844 in honour of the British Colonial Secretary of the day.
Today Russell offers one of the most romantic holiday experiences in the country, with its range of top class restaurants and cafes, abundant fresh local produce and seafood, exquisitely restored historic buildings and excellent galleries.

BEST Massage in Russel! - Things to do in Russell, New Zealand, Bay of Islands
Things do do in Russell New Zealand - Russell Massage Therapist: - call 021 0247 0564 to book a Healing Massage.
While travelling through the beautiful Bay of Isles, I came across the charmingly beautiful village of Russell. One of the prettiest places and regions I've ever been to.
One of the highlights during my days here was a beautiful healing massage that I received from Frank at Russel Healing Massage.
It was a heavenly experience and by far the most wonderful massage I've ever experienced - in all my travels around the world, incl. first class spas in luxury hotels.
Frank has that special touch. His place in the rain forest outside of Russell is quiet, serene and amazingly beautiful. It's like entering a different world.
If you want to have the most beautiful massage experience ever that will leave you walking on clouds for several days, be sure to include this Russell Massage experience in your travel plans for things to do in Russell NZ.
Frank also offers Bowen Technique, Reiki, Deeksha, Hot Stone, and Energy Healing and you can combine them with your regular massage. Partner massages are also available and he does call outs within the Bay of Isles region upon request.

TOP 3 THINGS TO SEE - Russell, Bay of Islands, New Zealand
As you stroll round, Bay of Islands today, you’re walking back in time. The town’s original street plan and names from 1843 are still intact and feature some of New Zealand’s oldest and most significant historic buildings. Russell Kororareka was developed initially as a shore station for shipping. The European population grew, with a mixture of deserting seamen, runaway convicts, and grog sellers, as well as settlers and traders. The township thus gained a reputation as a lawless and rowdy port and the unflattering nickname “Hell Hole of the Pacific”. Many of the buildings seen in Russell Township now are dated back to these times, and during your stay, you will be able to discover more about the amazing stories that these buildings hold.
