Safita is a city in the Tartous Governorate, northwestern Syria, located to the southeast of Tartous and to the northwest of Krak des Chevaliers. It is situated on the tops of three hills and the valleys between them, in the Syrian Coastal Mountain Range. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics , Safita had a population of 20,301 in the 2004 census.

It was the capital of Apamene under the Macedonians, became the capital and Metropolitan Archbishopric of late Roman province Syria Secunda, again in the crusader time and since the 20th century a quadruple Catholic titular see. Amongst the impressive ancient remains, the site includes the Great Colonnade which ran for nearly 2 km making it among the longest in the Roman world and the Roman Theatre, one of the largest surviving theatres of the Roman Empire with an estimated seating capacity in excess of 20,000. The site is about 55 km to the northwest of Hama, Syria, overlooking the Ghab valley.

Arwad – formerly known as Arados , Arvad, Arpad, Arphad, and Antiochia in Pieria , also called Ruad Island – located in the Mediterranean Sea, is the only inhabited island in Syria. The town of Arwad covers the entire island. It is located 3 kilometres from Tartus , Syria's second largest port. Today, it is mainly a fishing town. Plans have been unveiled in May 2016 to renovate the island to become a tourist attraction. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, Arwad had a population of 4,403 in the 2004 census. It is the administrative center of the Arwad nahiyah of which it is the only locality. Its inhabitants are predominantly Sunni Muslims.

A late evening view of central and southern areas of Damascus, the capital of Syria, taken from near the top of Mount Qasiyoun.

The call to prayer had just echoed around the whole city as the sun had set which still illuminated the western sky and the moon had risen. Later that night there was a moon eclipse which was fully visible from Damascus.

This mountain is fully accessible by road.

Filmed in June 2011 when the supposed anti-government protests were thought to be bringing the country to a standstill. However, the capital did not witness a single march - in fact towards the end of our stay we saw a pro-government rally occurring in the centre of Damascus. Whether this may have been to do with the authority, I cannot confirm, so any opinion on this matter is exactly that - an opinion.
