La ville est le chef-lieu de la municipalité régionale de comté (MRC) de Rivière-du-Loup dans le Bas-Saint-Laurent . La nouvelle ville Rivière-du-Loup a été créée le 30 décembre 1998 à partir du regroupement de la ville de Rivière-du-Loup et de la municipalité de la paroisse de Saint-Patrice-de-la-Rivière-du-Loup. La ville est un centre régional important grâce au palais de justice de Rivière-du-Loup, au Centre hospitalier régional du Grand-Portage (CHRGP), au CLSC Rivières et marées et à son campus étudiant.
