On my second day in Guatemala in partnership with the Real Intercontinental Guatemala we headed to Lake Atitlan to explore the town of San Juan La Laguna where we tried coffee, guatemalan snowcone and visited a textile factory!

Today we head to Lake Atitlan one of the most beautiful lakes in the world! It took us 3 hours to drive from Guatemala City to Lake Atitlan. On the way we passed through Solola and hopped on a quick boat ride from Panajachel to San Juan La Laguna.
San Juan La Laguna is famous for its painters, coffee and it's maya textiles. We first stopped at Cafe San Juan to drink a few different coffee roast. Maya coffee in San Juan La Laguna is unreal!
Then we made our way through the town admiring the murals and galleries. We saw a vendor selling some incredible Guatemalan snow cones and I had to try it. They put roasted corn and lime mixed with a few other flavors and its so good!
Lastly we stopped at Casa Flor Ixcaco to see how these Maya women weave these beautiful textiles. From scarfs, to t-shirts to even some incredible baby shoes. A must visit and you have to buy!!

The most stunning spot around the Atitlan Lake? 100 km hike - day 1 - Panajachel to...(sub:EN,PL,ES)
Do you want to belong to the first ones to do something around the Atitlan Lake, before it gets too popular?
Are you asking yourself a question: can you walk around Atitlan Lake? Yes, you definitely can! This is exactly what we did!
Atitlan Lake is one of the most well known tourist destinations in Guatemala, and I completely understand it, since it is one of the most beautiful places not only in Guatemala, but is also called as the most beautiful lake in the world. Imagine that!
But most of the time, the Atitlan Lake is visited for only few days, and most of the people either stay in Panajachel (I call it: the tourist town), or in San Marcos (I call it: commercialized hippy town) or in San Pedro (I call it: Israeli town). Maybe some more active travelers explore also the neighboring towns on tuk tuk, kayak or on a boat.
But Atitlan Lake has much more to offer than that! It is not only climbing the Indian Nose to see the sunrise over the lake. It is not only drinking free beer in Santa Cruz or enjoying the views over San Pedro volcano from one of the many hostels in San Pedro or buying souvenirs in Panajachel, that don't even come from the region.
I have been exploring Guatemala and its plethora of hiking opportunities for the last 4 months, and my friend, Abel has been traveling around Central America on a bicycle for the last 9 months (his views on bike travel on budget in Central America:
While admiring the Atitlan Lake from one of the usual hiking trails, we came up with a bit of a crazy idea to circumnavigating the lake on foot.
In July, August and September I was 2018 staying in Jaibalito, which is one of the smallest villages around the lake, since the only option to get there is on a boat, or on foot through hills and mountains. The next town, Santa Cruz is kind of a dead end, since from there it's impossible to get to Panajachel without using the boat.
So that is why we decided to start the hike around the Atitlan Lake from Panajachel, and get back to Jaibalito the longer way - after going through all the villages of the lake.
We calculated more or less 100 km on foot, through Panajachel, Santa Catarina Palopó, San Antonio Palopó, Agua Escondida, San Lucas Tolimán, Cerro de Oro, Santiago de Atitlan, San Pedro la Laguna, San Juan la Laguna, San Pablo la Laguna, San Marcos la Laguna, Tzununa y Jaibalito.
On the first day we took a boat from Jaibalito to one of the jetties in Panajachel, the least known, where they charge 10 quetzales and not 20! So that is a good tip: if taking the boat from Panajachel, get to the pier, which is called Tzanjuyu, it's just at the beginning of the town, before the La Torre supermarket.
On the first day we did only 14 kilometers, but some of it was a good way up. Maps.me indicates approximately 6 hours for that distance.
We went through Santa Catarina, which surprised us with the colorful blue houses and the variety of handcrafts. Then San Antonio de Palopo, where we had some difficulties in finding anything to eat.
In the afternoon we arrived at a lookout point, just 2 kilometers before Agua Escondida. The views were so stunning and the surrounding so welcoming, that we decided to stay there. Since, if a place calls you, just stay where you are.
We pitched the tent in a front line of the lake, and had some basic supper (bread with peanut butter) watching the most amazing sunset over the lake. It was an unforgettable moment!
The first day it didnt rain at all, neither during the day, nor durning the night, which was really quite surprising, since the previous weeks it was always raining at least during the night. After all, we are in the middle of the rainy season in Guatemala!
For the entire 5-day trip, we spent 152 quetzales (22 USD), so the daily expense is approx. 4USD).

Lago Atitlán, qué hacer y cómo llegar al lago más famoso de Guatemala
El Lago Atitlán, conisderado uno de los más hermosos del mundo, es un lugar dónde aún se preservan tradiciones Mayas como el telar de cintura. Continúa leyendo la descripción del video para saber más detalles de cómo llegar y qué hacer en el Lago Atitlán.
-Cómo llegar al Lago de Atitlán:
*Puedes llegar desde Guatemala, Antigua, Quetzaltenango etc, hacia Panajachel y ahí tomas una lancha que te lleve a cualquiera de los pueblitos que están al rededor del lago.
Si vienes de otro país, puedes llegar en avión a Guatemala y de ahí tomar el chicken bus que es el transporte más económico hacia Panajachel o si sales desde Antigua toma un autobús hacia Chimaltenango a una hora y que te costará aproximadamente 5 quetzales, una vez ahí toma otro autobús hacia Sololá que cuesta 20 quetzales y el trayecto es de 2 horas por último toma otro autobús con destino hacia Panajachel con un costo de 5 quetzales. Si deseas algo más rápido y más cómodo está la opción de tomar un shuttle que tiene un costo de $12 dólares aproximadamente, hay otras operadoras que cobran de $20-$25 dólares por persona, por trayecto. Te recogen en tu hotel y te regresan por la tarde.

-Qué hacer en el Lago de Atitlán
Toma una lancha hacia cualquiera de los pueblitos que están alrededor del lago como: San Pedro la Laguna, San Marcos la Laguna, Santa Cruz la Laguna, Santa Catarina Palopó y San Antonio Palopó y Santiago Atitlán.
También está San Juan la Laguna que fue el que nosotros visitamos, disfrutamos del café guatemalteco producido ahí mismo y además visitamos una cooperativa de mujeres mayas tejedoras que preservan el arte del telar de cintura. Nos mostraron todo el proceso de preparación del algodón, cómo lo tiñen y preparan para comenzar a tejer. Es muy interesante ver la dedicación y paciencia de estas mujeres.
En su tienda hay muchísimas cosas como ropa para dama, caballero y niños, recuerditos, accesorios en fin de tanto no sabrás qué comprarte.
Es un pueblo que se conoce caminando, si te cansas puedes hacer uso de los tuc-tuc que es el taxi local. Hay artesanos y pintores locales que tienes sus galerías abiertas al público y sus cuadros en venta.
-Dónde comer en el Lago de Atitlán
En el Hotel Atitlán se come delicioso y además tienes una vista estupenda desde este lugar. La comida que ofrece es regional e internacional, con alimentos de excelente calidad y muy frescos.
Es un lugar amplio, tranquilo y desde tu mesa alcanzas a ver los volcanes que rodean este majestuosos lago. Aquí comimos una crema de champiñones y como platillo fuerte un lomito de res bastante sabroso acompañado de verduras y para cerrar con broche de oro, un pastel de chocolate buenísimo.

The absolute 5 top places of Guatemala
I would like to share with you the top 5 places in Guatemala to visit if you only have 2 weeks. I have spent so far 6 months in Guatemala, exploring it to the fullest.
After your arrival in the Capital City of Guatemala take a bus straight to Antigua (the normal chicken buses run till about 6pm. but you might not want to wait till the last one:).
Antigua is a brilliant vibrant city. It might be a bit touristy and overprices, yes… But! It is still worth it. I encourage you to also travel off season, like me. That has many more advantages than disadvantages.
If you are into hiking, I would recommend climbing up the Acatenango volcano, with the view over Fuego. Fuego is one of the 3 active volcanoes in Guatemala (the others being Santiaguito (2,550 meters - 8,366 ft) close to Xela, and Pacaya (2,552 metres - 8,373 ft) close to Antigua). It has a big, devastating eruption (very sad for all of us, since many people lost their lives:( )on the 3rd of June 2018. Since then the eruption pattern changed. The footage of Fuego in the video was taken by me, just 2 weeks before the big eruption. And I know that it doesn’t look like this any more. It is still a great hike, but I just want you to manage your expectations accordingly.

And to go to Pacaya in the early morning. And since you have to go there with a guide anyway, well… I paid 60 quetzales for the Pacaya tour (with transport and guide).
From Antigua, go to the Atitlan Lake. On the Atitlan Lake there are 13 villages that have a direct access to the lake. Plenty of information about the Atitlan villages, as well as the 5 day hike around the Atitlan Lake you can find under the following link - and see the description under each of the videos:
From Atitlan Lake you should go to Semuc Champey. It is a very tiring journey so you definitively should rest before! For this stretch - take the shuttle!
In Semuc Champey and around the Lanquin area there are plenty of hiking options. But what you should not miss out on, is of course - the waterfalls and pools of Semuc Champey. The entrance is 50 quetzales for foreigners.
I would probably stay close to Semuc Champey (and not in Lanquin), so that you can go early in the morning and avoid the crowds. When I arrived there around 8.00 am there were not many people around and I was able to enjoy it much more than when all the tour groups arrived. Ahh, and in Semuc Champey it rains a lot.
So - go early, hike up to the Mirador, then go down to the pools.
Take a padlock with you, so that you can safely lock your belongings when you will be splashing and swimming in the pools. While choosing where you put your stuff, make sure you chose the locker which is undamaged!
You can visit the Kanba caves on the same day. the last guided visit is at 3pm. It costs 60 quetzales and is well worth it! You have to go with the guide, and actually for this type of situations, I do fully agree it is organized this way.
After the cave experience, go for tubing - that is just 10 quetzales more. You won’t be that long on the tube, but in my opinion, that is long enough for the experience.
After Semuc Champey go to Flores. Flores is an island in the Peten state, close to the Tikal ruins. I think you might want to stay there the afternoon you arrived from Semuc, walk around the island, try some food on the bridge food stalls (las Mesitas) - 3 tostadas or mini portions of salads for 5 quetzales. Enjoy the spectacular sunset and go to the other side of the lake - San Miguel to the lookout point. Also, you can use the afternoon to plan your tour to Tikal. I personally would do it with a tour. So, for the morning tour with a guide you can pay 70 quetzales, 60 without the guide. The local transport in the morning to and from Tikal will cost you at least 40, plus a transport to the Santa Elena bus terminal if you don’t want to walk at 5 am in the morning… So - in this case - the option with the guide is a good one, cause you will get the basic understating from the area and s/he is going to accompany you till 10-11am. And after that - you can just walk around the ruins by yourself. Till the last transport (which tends to be around 4-5pm). Which is great.
If you can stay more time in the area, I would go to el Remate. It is a much less popular and has much more beautiful surrounding than Flores, is closer to nature (plenty of howling monkeys there).

Today we head out on a Guatemala City tour where we visit all the top attractions and we eat really authentic Guatemalan street food that you can only dream of.
Our first stop is the Guatemalan Typography Map where you can see what the country looks like with mountains, volcanoes and low lands. Next we head to Zone 1 (the historical center) and visit the central park. There we tried some fresh goat milk, saw the national palace, metropolitan cathedral and then head over the central market.
The central market is the biggest artisan market in Guatemala. We did a little shopping and then went to the lower level and ate some authentic Guatemalan street food. Here is a list of everything I tried:

What to Do in Guatemala - Lake Atitlan and Antigua 2018
Earlier in the year, Amy and I visited one of the most beautiful countries of the world, Guatemala. To be honest, I didn’t know much about the country before my research. However, I am so grateful that I was able to experience it first hand. On our trip, we went to two locations - Antigua and Lake Atitlan.
Antigua is an old colonial town that has a really unique blend of Central American and European culture. The city is paved with cobbled stone and is filled with bright colorful buildings. Antigua is very walking friendly is known for its restaurant and cafes. There are abundant hospitality options, but we really enjoyed staying at the AirBnB Calle “Casa Girasol” and eating at Los Tres Tiempos restaurant. The city is known for its pictureqsue landmarks- Santa Catalina Arch, Central Park Plaza, Central Market - and they are all really close to each other. If you want to see a gorgeous view of the city, the hike up to Hill of the Cross is absolutely worth it. You can definitely walk there from the city, but we recommend taking a tuk-tuk.
Lake Atitlan is a massive body of water with breathtaking views of multiple volcanoes. There are really diverse communities scattered around the Lake. Some of the villages range from a yoga center for hippies to a local fishing village known for ceramics. Its definitely worth to visit all (or most) of them. However, we de-prioritized going to the touristy towns like Panjachel. Public transportation is fairly easy to navigate. Every half hour, there will be public boats or lanchas that will take you around the lake. We stayed at one of the most beautiful AirBnbs, the Lakefront B&B owned by a woman named Dita. It was truly a magical experience. Everything from the modern room aesthetic, private access to the lake, and curated breakfast/dinner selection made the stay remarkable.
