Vladimir Putin- Children's summer camp, Gurzuf, Crimea 24.06.2017
Russia President Vladimir Putin visited the iconic Artek children's summer camp in Gurzuf, Crimea, on Saturday.
The leader attended the opening of the camp's seventh session of the 2017 season, and met children and staff who are spending their summer there. Afterwards, Putin visited the recently refurbished international children's centre, and looked at plans and models for the Solnechny camp, which is currently under construction.
Children who visit the camp come not only from Russia but all over the world, from as far as the United States to Syria.
The Russian government invested 21 billion rubles ($568 million, €504 million) in revamping the camp after it became the property of the state in March 2014.
The camp is located in the town of Gurzuf, 12 km (7 miles) from the well-known South Coast spa resort - Yalta. Artek occupies a territory of 208 hectares, 102 of which are parks. Artek's coastline spreads for seven km from Ayu-Dag (The Bear Mount) to the town of Gurzuf. Over the decades, Artek has grown from a small tent camp set up in 1925 into a huge camp made up of 10 smaller camps with a well-developed infrastructure.
