In this last episode from Colombia my buddy Stefan and I are going to take you with us as we explore the most beautiful beaches in Colombia at the Tayrona National Park, do another tubing session in Palomino and hike through the green mountains around Minca where we check out waterfalls and learn more about Colombian coffee.
Starting in Santa Marta we explore the whole area - despite the fact that there are not so many things to do in Santa Marta itself there are numerous picturesque destinations all around, therefore we used the city as our transportation hub between the beaches in the east and the mountain village of Mince
In the next episode I show you how to prepare your own trip to Colombia by sharing my best Colombia travel tips followed by a packing list video.

— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

BUDGET BACKPACKER GUIDE TO COLOMBIA COAST - TAYRONA NATIONAL NATURAL PARK
Welcome to Tayrona National Park!
#ParqueTayrona
I hope this video helps provide some insight and advice if you're interested in visiting Tayrona National Park.
As a review, here are some instructions and tips for Tayrona:
HOW TO GET THERE - Near the corner of Calle 11 and Carrera 9, you will see the bus. Just know that this bus will go all the way to Palomino, so the stop for Tayrona is about 45 mins away from Santa Marta. Cost = 7,000 COP ($2.30 USD)
AT THE ENTRANCE - The cost of entry is 52,000 COP ($17 USD) per person and you can only pay in cash AND you need to show your passport (or a copy of it).
WHERE TO GO - We stayed at Cabo San Juan. There are also more places to stay like Playa Cañaverales and Playa Arrecifes... since we didn't stay there, I don't know much info about the other places. We walked past them on our way in and out, and they seemed much quieter.
THINGS TO BRING
- CASH bc they don't accept credit cards
- Bug repellent
- Your own water and food
- Adventure hat

WILD Nature In Tayrona National Park, Colombia
After a refreshing stay in Viajero Hostel Tayrona, we spent a great 2 days hiking & exploring Colombia's Tayrona National Park or Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona. The highlight of our time there was definitely swimming, camping & relaxing at Cabo San Juan camping.
In case you're wondering where to stay in Tayrona National Park, renting a tent in Cabo San Juan is in our opinion the best option if you're looking for a cool vibe, great views and one of the few swimmable stretches of Tayrona beach in the entire park.

Colombia Trike Tour - My Visit to Tayrona National Park
This was an interesting experience. Ever since arriving in Colombia I have had numerous recommendations to visit Tayrona National Park. In fact, this may the place more people have suggested I visit. I stayed in a funky treehouse hostel very close to the entrance in order to make this trip. My experience here was quite different from all the hype. I arrived on the last day before the park closes for a month. Tayrona closes every year for a month for maintenance, cleaning and to let the local indigenous tribes do sacred ceremonies in peace. The park is in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains which rise to 18,000 ft in elevation. This mountain range is the highest coastal range in the world. There are many hikes within the park to beaches and small indigenous pueblitos - or touristic facsimiles of tribal life. The hikes are of differing difficulties. You can also camp in the park. There are cabins for rent as well as hammocks or bring a tent. This is very popular. At the hostel there were many young people who had spent the night in hammocks. They all said it was extremely uncomfortable and no one slept well.
I'm not much of a hiker and, especially since I'm still dealing with an upper thigh injury, I decided to do the shortest and easiest hike to a beach. The sign said the hike was 50 minutes but it was actually closer to 2 hours which was much too far for me at the moment. I ended up turning around before getting to the beach. There were many people carrying cases of beer, food and listening to loud music as they made their way to the beach. This was a different experience than I had in mind.
The entrance fee is $22 and then you have to pay more to take a collectivo to where the hikes start. You can also rent horses. Apparently there is terrific diving off the coast as well. The nature was nice but the animals and birds were all scared away by the noisy crowd. I enjoyed the walk but thought $25 to walk for 3 hours was excessive. I guess not all experiences are what they are cracked up to be.
Here is a snapshot of my what I saw. I didn't add music preferring to listen to the natural sounds of the park come through.
