Fishing Villages in Mumbai - India Travel
See a different, calmer side of Mumbai.
Mumbai, like any other big city, has many different personalities. The mix of people from various religious, social, and cultural backgrounds, is mind boggling. Even a single street can have multiple characteristics. One of the interesting, but lesser known parts about Mumbai, are its fishing villages. These have been around for hundreds of years, and they still preserve their old lifestyle. Mumbai, initially, was a collection of several fishing villages, which gradually evolved into a large city. And today, we are at the Khar Danda fishing village. Life here is very relaxed and laid back, and not hectic like the rest of the city. And most of the households in this village are very simple, without much of modern amenities.
The men go out in the sea to catch different kind of seafood. While a lot of the catch is distributed all over the city for sale, it is also kept in the village itself for their own consumption. I have two boats. We go one morning, then come back the next morning. We spend a night in the sea. You get prawns here, lobster, large as well as small fish. The women are dressed in colorful clothes, and other than doing the household work. They help the men take care of the day's catch. And if you get a meal invite from a family over here, consider yourself very fortunate. Because you will be tasting some of the freshest seafood in Mumbai. The women of the village are also involved in selling the fish in the nearby markets. I am Premjit Singh, showing you Mumbai.
Udvada
This is the land where the Parsis first settled. A land filled with rich history, cultural and legends of a community that became integral amongst Gujaratis. Walk through these lanes of ethnicity in Udvada.
