Menkemaborg, Marsum and Appingedam | The Netherlands #2
In this second episode, I take to the tracks to visit one of the Netherlands' northern provinces: Groningen. My first stop is the Menkemaborg, a fortified house turned into a gentleman's home. I then continue to the pre-romanesque church at Marsum. This church, built in the second half of the twelfth century, is situated on a man-made mound (Terp or Wierde) to protect it from floods. I finish the day in the picturesque medieval centre of Appingedam.

Aiko & Jack go to The Netherlands (June 2012)
In June 2012, we took a month off work and headed to the country where I was born - The Netherlands. When we first met, Aiko had shown me around her native Japan, and this time it was my turn to show her where I came from. We behaved totally like tourists, and had an awesome time! We stayed in Appingedam, Groningen City, and Amsterdam, but visited a few other places as well.
On the way back we stopped off in Singapore for a few days as well.
Positive comments are invited, negative comments will be deleted.

Amsterdam, Museum Willet Holthuysen 2014
The canal house at the Herengracht 605 dates from the 17th century. In 1855 the house was acquired by the parents of Louisa Holthuysen. After the death of her father in 1858, Louisa inherited the house and its contents. In 1861 she married Abraham Willet, whom she had known for several years. The couple redecorated the rooms in the basement and gave the bel-etage a complete face-lift in elegant Louis XVI style.
Walk through the Hague, Netherlands
The Hague, or Den Haag, although not the nation's capitol is home to the seat of government of the Netherlands. Featured attractions include the Binnenhof complex, home to the Dutch government, and Paleis Noordiende, the offices of the Dutch monarch. But the Hague is also a beach resort town. Its Scheveningen District lies on the North Sea coast and is a popular destination in its own right.
These pictures follow my walking route through the city from the train station to the beach along the North Sea coast.
The Photos (in order)
E09A0936 - The Binnenhof complex is home to the heart of the Dutch government, including the office of the prime minister and both houses of the national legislature; this Gothic castle was mostly built in the 1300s; it is the oldest house of parliament still in use in the world
E09A0944 - The Ridderzaal is the heart of the Binnenhof; it is home to the official opening ceremony of the parliament, and hosts official royal receptions; Ridderzaal was originally constructed in the 13th century as the manorial hall of Floris V, Count of Holland
E09A0965 - The Oude Stadhuis - the Old Town Hall - dates back to 1565; although the city has a new town hall, the Old Town Hall is where residents hold their civic wedding ceremonies and where the royal family registers family births
E09A0973 - Paleis Noordeinde is one of three official palaces used by the Dutch royal family; it primarily serves as the monarch's office for dealing with government responsibilities
E09A0989 - The city's World War II memorial
E09A0990 - Vredespaleis - the Peace Palace - houses the International Court of Justice
E09A1001 - Shops and restaurants line Keizerstraat as it approaches the coast through Scheveningen, one of the Hague's districts, and is famous for its beaches and seaside resorts
E09A1011 - Strandweg follows the beaches of the North Sea Coast in Scheveningen
De Koperen Hoogte Zwolle
The 4-star hotel De Koperen Hoogte has a beautiful location by a small lake between Zwolle and Staphorst. This luxury hotel is part of an exclusive business and entertainment centre. This centre has, among other things, a golf course, various restaurants and conference halls.
De Koperen Hoogte has so much to offer that it may not even be necessary to leave the premises. Still, those who have some time left should definitely pay a visit to the provincial city of Zwolle. In Zwolle there area many monumental buildings that have been well-preserved, among which the late-Gothic church tower De Peperbus in the heart of the city. Zwolle is also an excellent city for those who love to shop.
