A DAY IN RIGA, Latvia - 5 Feb 2008
Over 4 years,I travelled with friends,family or on my own on 1 day return trips from London Stansted Airport to towns or cities in Europe. My mode of transport was the wonderfully inexpensive RYANAIR with prices starting at one penny each way.....including airport taxes !!! It was a wonderful way to see the world. Daugavpils (pronounced [ˈdɐʊɡɐʊpɪ̈ls]) is a city in southeastern Latvia, located on the banks of the Daugava River, from which the city gets its name. Daugavpils literally means Daugava Castle. With a population of over 100,000, it is the second largest city in the country after the capital Riga, which is located some 230 km to its north-west. Daugavpils has a favorable geographical position as it borders Belarus and Lithuania (distances of 33 and 25 km respectively). It is located some 120 km from the Latvian border with Russia. Daugavpils is a major railway junction and industrial centre.

Даўгаўпілс, ранее Дзвiнск (Дзьвiнск), идиш דענענבורג (Дененбург)) — город республиканского подчинения в Латвии, второй по величине и значению город страны после столицы Риги (расстояние по шоссе — 232 км, по железной дороге — 218 км) со 102 тысячами жителей. Расположен на реке Даугава (Западная Двина), рядом с границами Литвы (25 км) и Белоруссии (33 км).
Многонациональный и многоконфессиональный город. В источниках впервые упоминается в 1275 году.
Является крупнейшим городом восточной провинции Латвии — Латгалии, её культурный, образовательный и промышленный центр.
