In South Dakota they don’t just carve stone, they carve entire mountains! In the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore is one of the great icons of America. A few miles away, is a work in progress, The Crazy Horse Memorial. The dreams of man manifested by the determination of a single family’s hard work & perseverance. One of the greatest events of the year, takes place in Custer State Park. The annual Buffalo Roundup attracts over 8000 spectators to watch the display of cowboys on horseback (and in a wide variety of other vehicles) herd 1500 of the stubborn beasts to the pens for sorting, vaccination and potential sale. Once out of the Black Hills among the prairies is ranching and farming country. A must see is Wall Drug in Wall, the Pioneer Auto Show in Murdo, Hansen Carriages in Letcher, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s childhood home in De Smet, Terry Redlin Art Gallery in Watertown and the Corn Palace in Mitchell. October is pheasant season, a monument to which is the World’s Largest Pheasant in Huron, which is also home to “the city of murals”. Pheasant hunters from all over flock to this area to pursue the state bird, the Chinese ring neck pheasant.

Badlands National Park in South Dakota is an amazing geological landscape of rugged beauty. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world's richest fossil beds. The park's 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs live today.

Driving from Watertown, SD to Omaha, NE via I29
This day takes us from somewhere around Watertown, South Dakato, through Sioux Falls, SD, then to Sioux City, Iowa, and finally to Omaha, Nebraska. I was surprised to find another Gretna just outside of Omaha, so I spent the night there. It was just like being back home, except I didn't know anyone, and I slept in my car. :)
I was ready for another show, so I drove into Omaha and found The Down Under Lounge where a great band from Fort Collins, Colorado was playing, Post Paradise. Watch for video from this show soon.
My Sony HXR-NX100 rode shotgun on a tripod shooting at 4 fps. The tripod was held in place using bungee cords giving it I nice smooth feel, even on bumpy roads. I also used this same camera to shoot various scenes around the country, and to interview folks.

Ranchers during DQ® Relief For Ranchers November 4-10
Sales benefit Ranchers Relief Fund
Belle Fourche, S.D.. -- Dairy Queen® restaurants in South Dakota have joined forces to
help their neighbors who lost livestock during the October Atlas Blizzard. The DQ®
Relief For Ranchers week will be November 4 -- 10. At least $1 from every burger sold at
31 participating Dairy Queen locations will go to the Rancher Relief Fund.
We realize that the Dairy Queen restaurants wouldn't exist without the back
breaking work that our farmers and ranchers in South Dakota put into their trade, said
Tara Knapp, owner of the Belle Fourche DQ Grill & Chill® restaurant and Designated
Marketing Area (DMA) Chairperson for Rapid City area. Ranching is not just a business,
but a way of life. It only makes sense that we help our friends, neighbors and business
partners in their time of need.
The goal for the week-long event is to sell 25,000 burgers across the state and
raise at lease $25,000 for the Rancher Relief Fund, a cooperative effort of the South
Dakota Cattlemen's Association, the Stockgrowers Association, the Sheep Growers
Association and the Black Hills Area Community Foundation.
Participating DQ locations in the Rapid City area include: all locations in Rapid
City, Belle Fourche, Custer, Hot Springs, Martin, Spearfish, Sturgis and Wall.
East River participating DQ locations include: all Sioux Falls location, Brandon,
Brookings, Canton, Chamberlain De Smet, Eagle Butte, Groton, Huron, Madison, Miller,
Mitchell, Mobridge, Sisseton, Redfield, Vermillion, Watertown, Winner, and Yankton.
