Wonderful Maumere Flores The Heart of Flores
Maumere is the perfect staging place to embark on an unforgettable adventure to unveil the beauty of Flores. The town itself is blessed with a beautiful landscape of hills and mountains complemented with clear green and blue ocean.
Maumere is the biggest city in Flores, larger than Labuan Bajo at the west end of the island. The town used to serve as an alternative for tourists to go to the Komodo National Park aside from Labuan Bajo. While, those wishing to attend Easter celebrations in Larantuka, also start off from Maumere, which is more easily connected by air to other parts of Indonesia.
Located at the narrowest part of the island, from Maumere due south to near the town Nita at Koting village, one can see as far as the Flores Sea to the north and the Savu Sea to the Indian Ocean to its southern horizon.
Today, Maumere is also the stepping off point to see the Three-Coloured Lakes on Mt. Kelimutu on the way to Ende. The village of Sikka, some 30 km from Maumere is the center of weaving in this area. Here visitors can watch, on request, the complete intricate process of ikat-weaving, including dying the threats with natural colors. Another village known for its weaving is Watublapi, which distinguishes itself through the use of symbolic motifs such as lizards, horses, birds and geometrical patterns.
Maumere used to be a favorite snorkeling and diving area, made famous by the Sao Wisata Resort built by Flores’ own hero, Frans Seda. Unfortunately, the 1992 tsunami davastated parts of the sea and the city. Before that, Maumere was considered by many as the true illustration of “Flores” or Flower of the East Nusatenggara Archipelago.

Indonesian Textile Journey: Narrated presentation about a tour with Bestway Tours & Safaris
Bestway Tours & Safaris hosted a webinar presented by geographer and travel lecturer Peter Langer on a specialized tour to Indonesia in 2015. The “Wastra: An Indonesian Textile Journey” will be escorted by Liza Wajong, a Canadian expert in Indonesian textiles.
Indonesia’s culture has been shaped by the long interaction between original indigenous customs and multiple foreign influences. This unique cultural blend is reflected in traditional textiles, which many Indonesians consider to be an inherent part of their cultural identity. Several Indonesian islands are famous for their batik, ikat and songket cloth.
Find out about the batik and weaving centres in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Toraja and Bali to gain an in-depth understanding in the creation of the fabrics from these very different regions of the Indonesian archipelago. This journey explores diverse landscapes, experiencing the culture, beliefs and traditions, and above all, interacting with the local weavers, batik makers and textile artists. We will also hear from renowned textile experts throughout the tour. In addition to this the tour visits various historical and cultural sites, including three UNESCO World Heritage sites: The Borobudur Temple Compounds; the Prambanan Temple Grounds and the Cultural Landscape of Bali.

Sumba Ikat weaving
The most popular art and craft of Sumba is woven cloth named Ikat. The word ikat itself means to tie or to bind.
Each region has its own variety of ikat motifs and patterns; in Wanokaka, Lamboya as well as Tana Righu there are kain (cloth) panggiling, pahikung and pawora while in Loli region there is a cloth called kain lambaleko. Ikat weaving throughout Sumba has social, religious and traditions of significance. The different types of ikat cloth are related to the pattern making and coloring techniques.
Woven motifs in the region of West Sumba is generally quite small and slightly abstract unlike the ones in East Sumba. Fabric motifs for male usually consist of lines, dots and mamoli (Sumba's typical ear jewelry) around the edges. While the motifs for female consist of rhombus (as a symbol of buffalo eyes) and triangle (as a symbol of ponytail). According to the experts, motifs are adopted from the objects that are given by men to propose their fiancee which is later called dowry.
The spectacular and very famous ikat of Sumba is made of cotton hand spun, traditionally dyed with local plants (Kombu Indigo) and minerals. The pattern that is required on the cloth is knotted and bound into the wrap yarn and the thread is dyed before weaving. Thread is spun from July to October, then bound for patterns until December. After the rainy season, they collect indigo plants and kombu tree leaves for dying. In Summer, after harvest, women began to weave and it can take one year for one piece of textile.
On some kind of ikat, cowrie shells and colourful beads are intricately apply in keeping with old artistic tradition. Ikat textiles are used for exchange at important ceremonies and show one's social status. At funerals, the most exquisite textiles are placed in the grave for use in the afterlife.
Like craft or art form, ikat varies widely from country to country and region to region. Designs may have symbolic of ritual meaning or have been developed for export trade. Ikat is often symbol of status, wealth, power and prestige. Perhaps because of the difficulty and time consumed to make ikat, some people believe the cloth is imbued with magical powers.

Singing and spinning cotton in traditional style, in India
Rengma women singing and spinning cotton in the traditional style of the Nagas.
Nagaland, 'The Land of Festivals' and the warm Naga people, lies in the North Eastern part of India.
Sometimes Nagaland is also referred to as The Switzerland of the East. The region is primarily hilly and has a pleasant climate all through the year. It is perhaps the best place for the adventurous at heart and makes an ideal place for trekking and camping.
The area is also known as paradise on earth. The Dzukou Valley is the most famed valley of Nagaland and the natural beauty of the area is absolutely captivating.
Another attraction for tourists is the Kohima War Cemetery. The cemetery is a tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives pushing back the Japanese army during World War II. The bodies of approximately 1,100 British and 330 Indian soldiers are buried here.
One of the biggest cathedrals of North East India is located at Aradura Hill in Kohima. Its magnificent architecture makes it an important landmark of Kohima.
The Hornbill Festival is named after the Hornbill, a large, magnificent forest bird.
Held every year at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama about 12 kms from Kohima, the festival is held over a period of 10 days annually. The entire Heritage Village was built for the sole purpose of hosting this festival and the16 tribes of Nagaland each have their own representative hut in the village. Organized by the Govt. of Nagaland, the festival showcases the entire spectrum of the rich culture of the various Naga tribes.
The Hornbill festival was created to bring together the various tribes of the State to display their culture and tradition in the form of dances, songs, sports, foods and many other colorful events. People from within India as well as foreign visitors experience and witness the colorful festival with great enthusiasm.
Delicious, mouth-watering and typically Naga food from the different tribes is served in huts or morungs. Each Morung also has its own restaurant, which serves a specific tribal delicacy. Rice beer is always in great demand and tourists don't mind standing in long serpentine queues for a taste of the same.
