FLORES PT.1, INDONESIA - The Way Overland - Episode 15
We've now crossed our first official land border into Indonesia!
Our first destination is Kupang, the capital of the provence of East Nusa Tenggara and the island of Timor's biggest city. There is not a lot happening in the city though and subsequently is mainly used for a transit point between Timor, Flores, Rote and the islands to the North.
We had a couple of options from Kupang. Take the short crossing to the island of Rote and spend a few week surfing or continue westward to Flores. We didn’t particularly want to be stuck in Kupang for Christmas so the we opted for the latter for two reasons, its now the wet season and the onshores are blowing meaning the surf is unreliable and also as due to the increased wind and swell the crossing to Flores is often cancelled. The overnight ferry crossing from Kupang to Flores takes around 14 hours and is pretty basic. Thankfully we had our house so could retreat to get some sleep.
The ferry pulled into Larantuka at about 2:30 in the morning, so we found a spot in the ferry carpark to catch a couple more hours sleep. Then at breaky we met a lovely local, Sandy, who offered to show us around his home town.
After our tour of the markets and jetty in Larantuka, we started the 230km drive to Kelimutu, a volcano with tri-coloured crater lakes sitting at 1639m.
We found a camp spot just down from the volcano so that we could get up nice and early the next morning to go up to the summit in time for the sunrise. Unfortunately, Jolie's alarm didn't go off (or she turned it off), so we ended up reaching the top at about 8:30, which worked out well in the end as the misty morning had cleared by the time we got up there, making for some pretty awesome drone shots!
Hope you guys enjoyed the video! Next week we're driving to the north coast to a town called Riung where we have a fun day of snorkeling, then to Bajawa to soak in the hot springs and visit a traditional village, and to finish it off going diving in the Komodo National Park off Labuan Bajo.
If you have any suggestions on places we must see in Indonesia we’d love to hear from you!

Wonderful Indonesia | Kelimutu Flores
Mt. Kelimutu National Park is the smallest among six national parks in the stretch between Bali and the Nusatenggara islands. Its size obviously does not matter much when it offers one of the most spectacular wonders that nature has to offer. There are three lakes on the mountain sharing the same name, Kelimutu, meaning ‘the boiling lake’. Each has its own colors and a local name. But all are believed to be the resting place of departed souls.
Locations :
Kelimutu National Park, 3 Colored Lake, Bajawa, Ende, Caci ( Battle Dance ), Spider Web Rice Field, Bena Village, Sunrise Kelimutu, Kelimutu Trekking, Mount Inerie, Bena Tradisional House, Takpala Village, Lego-Lego dance, Rumah Pengasingan Bung Karno, Flores

Wonderful Maumere Flores The Heart of Flores
Maumere is the perfect staging place to embark on an unforgettable adventure to unveil the beauty of Flores. The town itself is blessed with a beautiful landscape of hills and mountains complemented with clear green and blue ocean.
Maumere is the biggest city in Flores, larger than Labuan Bajo at the west end of the island. The town used to serve as an alternative for tourists to go to the Komodo National Park aside from Labuan Bajo. While, those wishing to attend Easter celebrations in Larantuka, also start off from Maumere, which is more easily connected by air to other parts of Indonesia.
Located at the narrowest part of the island, from Maumere due south to near the town Nita at Koting village, one can see as far as the Flores Sea to the north and the Savu Sea to the Indian Ocean to its southern horizon.
Today, Maumere is also the stepping off point to see the Three-Coloured Lakes on Mt. Kelimutu on the way to Ende. The village of Sikka, some 30 km from Maumere is the center of weaving in this area. Here visitors can watch, on request, the complete intricate process of ikat-weaving, including dying the threats with natural colors. Another village known for its weaving is Watublapi, which distinguishes itself through the use of symbolic motifs such as lizards, horses, birds and geometrical patterns.
Maumere used to be a favorite snorkeling and diving area, made famous by the Sao Wisata Resort built by Flores’ own hero, Frans Seda. Unfortunately, the 1992 tsunami davastated parts of the sea and the city. Before that, Maumere was considered by many as the true illustration of “Flores” or Flower of the East Nusatenggara Archipelago.
Great Collaboration Video by Giri Prasetyo, Barry Kusuma, Michael Sjukrie and Budi Supriyanto.
