Welcome to the Vibrant and Versatile City of Khon Khaen!
Located in its namesake province, the colourful city of Khon Kaen is an attractive tourist destination with so much to recommend it, whether you are interested in art, culture or ancient history.
Once a historic hub of silk production and now a thriving university town, Khon Kaen is also known for its many beautiful temples, such as the royal temple of Wat Phra Mahathat Kaen Makhon, also known as the 9-storey stupa. This regal structure features stunning carvings and exquisite murals, and when you ascend to the 9th storey you will find relics of Lord Buddha and be dazzled by breathtaking views of the city.
However Khon Kaen’s allure doesn’t just lie in its beautiful historic temples. Families visiting the city are sure to enjoy a trip to Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum, where you can get up close and personal to these awe-inspiring prehistoric monsters and learn more about how they lived and how their bones were discovered millions of years later. Dino-mad kids are guaranteed to love this amazing attraction!
Another unmissable experience is a visit to Khon Kaen’s King Cobra Village, where all of the inhabitants – even the kids – interact with snakes on a daily basis, even ‘boxing’ with cobras to entertain and enthrall visitors.
Back in the city, there are plenty of other things to see and enjoy, from admiring colourful artworks in the city’s art galleries and shopping for beautiful souvenirs to take back for friends and family.
Khon Kaen also boasts a thriving nightlife, so why not end a fun-filled day of sightseeing with a tasty al fresco meal and some live music, the perfect end to a perfect day in this vibrant northern Thai city!

One of the best restaurants in Chiang Rai - Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา)
I think one of the best restaurants in Chiang Rai is Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา). You can read all the details about it here:
I really love Chiang Rai as a city - it’s peaceful, usually has fresh air, the lifestyle is calm, relaxing and friendly, and most of all, there’s a good selection of food to eat. Ranging from northern Thai food to delicious Thai Chinese food, you’ll find plenty to devour when you’re in Chiang Rai. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in the city is Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา), a restaurant located on the peaceful side of the city, near the Chiang Rai stadium and a school.
Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา) serves mostly a menu of northern Thai dishes, and they have a bunch of specials on their menu as well. I didn’t see an English menu, but the menu did have pictures to make it easier for you to order if you don’t speak Thai. The restaurant is sort of like an oversized open air shack, one of the types of restaurants that looked like it started off small and just kept growing and expanding in size little by little, until turning into the pretty large restaurant that it is today. But it’s exactly my style of a restaurants - no frills, open air, makeshift tables, and just amazing food.
Ying and I first started off with a Thai dish known as Yang Ruam (ย่างรวม), which was basically just a mixed grill plate. It included grilled pork, and some grilled pork organs like intestines and liver. The meat was grilled until almost halfway to a jerky style meat - so it had a bit of chewy texture, and it was slightly dried out - which is the way it was supposed to be. Dipped into the house-made chili sauce, it was pretty tasty. I especially liked the intestines, which were like little nuggets of sausage. The next dish we ordered was Jeen Neung (จิ้นนึ่ง), a plate of beef steamed with lemongrass and galangal, and served on a plate with fresh sprigs of cilantro and a side dipping sauce of galangal chilli sauce, known in Thai as nam prik kha (น้ำพริกข่า). The combination was masterful, the meat was slightly chewy, but along with the galangal chilli sauce and the fresh herbs, it was sensational. It honestly almost tasted like a Sunday roast, only with more flavor from the chili and herbs. The Jeen Neung (จิ้นนึ่ง) was one of the highlights of my meal at Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา) restaurant.
For another impressive dish we ordered the pla tabtim tod kratiem (ปลาทับทิมทอดกระเทียม), a fish deep fried, and topped with the most amazing pile of fried garlic that I’ve ever seen in my life. It was almost comical how much garlic they loaded on top of it. I did notice that the garlic was slightly battered before it was deep fried, so that did increase the size a bit, but nevertheless, it was a jaw-dropping mound of garlic. The fish was fried to an absolute crisp, and the sauce served was spicy and garlicky. The combination of the crunchy fried fish with the garlic and chili sauce was incredibly delicious. Our final dish, which we ordered just to wrap everything up and call it a complete northern Thai meal, was tom sab moo (ต้มแซ่บหมู), a soup of pork and herbs. It was a little on the greasy side, but wow was it extremely tasty. It was almost perfectly flavored, with chilies, lime juice, tomatoes, and cilantro, and the pork was so tender and so flavorful.
Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา) is a wonderful place to eat in Chiang Rai, and I think it’s one of my personal favorite restaurants in the city. The open air, and relaxing atmosphere could not get much better, and the food is wonderful - spicy, sour, pungent, and ultimately delicious. If you visit Chiang Rai, Thailand, and looking for a delicious meal experience that’s heavy on the meat, you should check this place out.

Khon Khaen Dinosaur
Long before there were humans here in Isaan, this area was ruled by dinosaurs. Many fossils and dinosaur artifacts have been found here, and ever since then Thailand’s had major dinosaur fever. That’s why there are many tourist attractions around Khon Kaen devoted to dinosaurs. We’re going to take you to around!
This is Phu Wiang dinosaur museum, around 15 minutes outside of Khon Kaen. It’s Thailand’s first dinosaur museum, and it’s filled with artifacts and dinosaur fossils found in the Isaan area. It’s home to the first dinosaur discovery in Thailand, a four-legged plant eating dinosaur with a long neck and a tail called a sauropod. He was found by accident in 1976. Tourists can come here to learn about fossils like this one and the process of fossil conservation.
From Thailand’s first dinosaur museum we are here, at Thailand’s first dinosaur excavation site. This is Phu Wiang National Park. This is the home of a numerous amount of paleontological sites where fossils have been found. It’s one of the world’s largest dinosaur graveyards.
Today you can come to Phu Wiang National Park and go trekking to excavation sites like this one. This is where a partial skeleton of one of T-rex’s early ancestors. Some say that if you get off the beaten track here in Phu Wiang, you can even find dinosaur footprints. From the viewpoint, you can see all of the national park from a fantastic perspective.
On the road to Phu Wiang National Park is the Si Wiang Dinosaur Park, around 70 kilometers outside of Khon Kaen. This museum is a great introduction to learning about dinosaurs, with models of various species that can make sounds and move. Don’t be scared, even though they may seem quite real.
As you can see, Khon Kaen is a wonderful place to learn about pre-historic times… and you’ll even get to see the real places where dinosaur history was made here. Don’t miss out on the Phu Wiang dinosaur museum, Phu Wiang national park and Si Wiang dinosaur park. It’s sure to be a lot of fun!
A Tourtist's Guide to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle

My pal, Colin, and I fly into Chiang Mai, gateway to Northern Thailand. After a couple of days sampling some of the life, we hire scooters and ride East for 3-hours until we hit Chiang Rai. From there, we head north to the Golden Triangle, the old opium centre during the 60s.
Then we head across the border into Myanmar.
See Part 2 to see what we got up to across the border.
My Thai Neighborhood
I've just moved to a new house 10 minutes from the Chiang Mai moat. This is a first walk around the 4 nearest blocks, focusing on the more interesting houses. Shot at 6:30 on February 27 – late Winter.

Dinosaur Daytrip tour - Northeast Thailand (Isan)
Khon Kaen province is famous for dinosaurs and this tour travels to the heart of dinosaur country in the Phu Wiang mountains where several important paleontological discoveries have been made, including two previously unknown species: Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae, a 15-meter (49 feet) long sauropod named after Thailand's beloved princess, and Siamotyrannus isanensis, an ancestor of Tyrannosaurs Rex named after Thailand and Isan. This is what accounts for the abundance of dinosaur sculptures in Khon Kaen city. We'll visit the dinosaur museum, stop for photo-ops with life-sized concrete statues, and see some actual fossils still stuck in the bedrock. But, even without the dinosaurs as a draw, Wiang Kao district is a wonderful place to visit. It's a very traditional region with few modern concrete houses and no 7-11s; and once you turn off the short main road you may feel you've taken a small step back in time. Plus the microclimate of the curious ring-shaped mountain range, which has just a single pass leading to its interior, makes the area highly productive, so you'll see lots of fruits and flowers being grown. We'll visit villages where women weave banners to hang in temples and make handbags from recycled coffee wrappers. We'll also climb a soaring tower to take in the awesome 360-degree view of the mountains. The combination of attractions makes this a great tour for both kids and adults.
We also have a two-day Dinosaurs & Dragon Fruits version of this tour.
