During my trip to Jakarta, I mostly remained in the city. But Ken and Gratiana from invited my wife Ying and I to go with them and their family on an Indonesian food trip to Bogor and the surrounding region (about an hour from Jakarta).
Our first stop when we drove out of Jakarta and to Bogor was a famous place to eat Bogor style laksa at a restaurant called Laksa Bogor Pak Inin. It was exactly my kind of a restaurant, open air and local, with a wonderful friendly environment. The laksa was unlike any other laksa I’ve ever had, and it was fantastic. Laksa Bogor - 10,000 IDR ($0.72)
Next, we stopped at a place called Toge Goreng Pak Abung, which is another legendary Indonesian food stop in Bogor, Indonesia, and they are famous for serving a bean sprout snack. It was definitely a very interesting dish, including a mixture of bean sprouts and fermented soy beans. Toge Goreng - 7,000 IDR ($0.51)
Next we drove into the beautiful Indonesian countryside and to the house. After having some Indonesian snacks and refreshing coconut, we then took a hike to go look for honey. The beekeeper was sick on the day we went, so we we’re able to get any honey, but it was still a beautiful hike.
The highlight of this Indonesian food trip for me was the Sundanese style Nasi Liwet Botram family feast that we had. All the food was laid out on banana leaves, and we all sat and ate some of the most beautiful and flavorful Indonesian food. It was an incredible culinary experience.
We drove back to Bogor and stopped at Warung Nasi Ampera to eat a quick dinner, and because I wanted to try some ikan pepes. The food was alright, but nothing compared to the lunch feast we had eaten! Total price - 103,000 IDR ($7.46) for 3 plates of food
Finally, back in Jakarta, we stopped near Manga Besar to have some desserts and to finish of this incredible day of Indonesian food. Sekoteng - 12,000 IDR ($0.87), Wedang Ronde - 12,000 IDR ($0.87)
It was an incredible Indonesian food trip to the outskirts of Bogor, and a nice opportunity to get out of Jakarta for the day.
A big thank you to Ken, Gratiana, and her family for inviting us to their house country house and for the amazing food.

the 4x4 jeep took them through untouched woodlands and rugged countryside on mostly dirt-roads with a stop at the echo valley, then at a ruined medieval monastery on Samsun Mountain. then they headed further south to the Dilek National Park, a peninsula known for its wild countryside and thick forests.they made another stop at Zeus' Cave on the park’s edges. cocooned in woods, the cave, made famous with the legend of zeus and Aphrodite(the god of love), was main tourist attraction in this region. they had a swim it the bright blue, translucent water at the bottom of the cave. . then they made a final stop at Long Beach just north of Dilek where they had lunch and a brief dip in the agegean sea, before heading back to the cruise.
mythological tales always intrigue him. whether it's greek, egyptian, chinese, australian aborigine, or a simple story of the origin of mankind from cultures all over the world.
one time he said to her, you know, there's this 先秦pre-QIN(before 221bc)chinese book《山海经》SHANHAIJING - the CLASSIC of MAOUNTAINS AND SEAS, which is the oldest book in chinese geography, with subjects including places, local produce, shamanism, religion, medical practices, local cultures... many events in the book were like out of this world which baffle many a historian. now, i want to tell you the legend of 夸父逐日 - KUAFU going after the sun, or another translation - KUAFU chasing away the sun.
the story of KUAFU going after the sun
-------------------------------------------------------------
in ancient time, there's a giant named KUAFU, who was the son of XIN who was the son of HOUDU. KUAFU dorned earings shaped like yellow snake. and his hands held 2 yellow snakes. he lived a deserted mountain named CHENDUDAITIAN. one day, KUAFU wanted to see what the sun really looked like. without considering his own capability, he went after the sun, until he caught up with it in YUGU. he was too thirsty by then, he went to the yellow river to quench his thirst, but the river water did not suffice him. so he went to the big lake to look for water. before he could reach it, he was already dehydrated and died of thirst, on the way. the cane he left behind turned into a peach garden. and his body turned into a mountain named after him.
ps: there's another version of KUAFU's death. he was killed by YINGLONG, a flying dragon, which is a legendary celestial beast bringing rain to wherever with its presence. so scholars said, the 2 versions of deaths meant the same - that YINGLONG withheld its rain and caused the death of KUAFU by dehydration.
she said, wow, the chinese legends were as imaginative as the other peoples.
he said, it may not be based totally out of their imagination. there's another saying that KUAFU is not a person but a tribe, like the titans in greek mythology. and the story is about an ancient tribe looking out for the source of water(due to severe draught). this was legendised into the saga of KUAFU's chasing away(as opposed to chasing after) the sun.
she said, perhaps legends are the scifi's of ancient times. people not only live by nature, and make incremental steps in raising their live quality, but they also ventured out into the realm of the unknown to reach out for their dreams.
surely they do, other than with legends, they had shamanism, religions and beliefs and practices, substances like wine and tobacco, meditation .... which were supposed to raise them into the etherial state. apart from all these paths to heaven, i know of one way for us to reach heaven together, now.
oh, you mean.... ok. what are we wating for then?
