Winsum is a municipality and a town in the northeastern Netherlands. The town of Winsum was officially established in 1057 as the fusion of three historic villages: Obergum , Winsum and Bellingeweer . The majority of the town's 8,000 inhabitants commute to the nearby city Groningen. The town boasts two traditional Dutch wind mills, two historic churches, two canals, and one of the Netherlands' oldest taverns. The two mills, De Ster and De Vriendschap were built in 1851 and 1801 respectively. Wildlands, also known as Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, is a zoo in Emmen, the Netherlands. It opened in March 2016, replacing the Emmen Zoo. Wildlands is an adventure theme park with four main areas: Jungola, Serenga, Nortica and Animazia. Fort Bourtange is a star fort in the village of Bourtange, Groningen, Netherlands. It was built under orders of William the Silent and completed in 1593. Its original purpose was to control the only road between Germany and the city of Groningen, which was controlled by the Spaniards during the time of the Eighty Years' War. After experiencing its final battle in 1672, the Fort continued to serve in the defensive network on the German border until it was finally given up in 1851 and converted into a village. Fort Bourtange currently serves as a historical museum.

Netherlands: The Eemskanaal from Groningen to Delfzijl

The Eemskanaal (Ems Canal) connects the city of Groningen (the Verbindingskanaal/Oosterhaven, Winschoterdiep and van Starkenborghkanaal) with Delfzijl (Ems). The canal was built between 1866 and 1876 and was expanded in 1963.
The canal is a major shipping route (suitable for coasters) and is also the main drainage of northeastern Drenthe (the Hunze and the Drentsche Aa) and the area around Hoogezand-Sappemeer, where many shipbuilding is situated.
The canal is 26,5 km long and has a width of 60 meters.

Zaanse-Schans, The Netherlands

Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk in the municipality of Zaanstad in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It has a collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses; the ca. 35 houses from all over the Zaanstreek were moved to the museum area in the 1970s.The Zaans Museum, established in 1994, is located in the Zaanse Schans.

The Zaanse Schans is one of the popular tourist attractions of the region and an anchor point of ERIH, the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The neighbourhood attracts approximately 900,000 visitors every year.

Ascension Day Fun Buitenpost & Eenrum (5.17.12 - Day 686)

To commemmorate our Ascension Day route of the 1990s, Carnamom and I decided to drive the same route today to see what it looks like nowadays.
After leaving HQ with Chibi and having a flat tire along the way, a quick stop over was made at the Afsluitdijk to see the IJsselmeer, then onward to pick up Carnamom from her house.
After a while of driving through the Frisian woodlands of De Wâlden, we ended up at the flea market in Buitenpost. We spent a couple of hours, then continued to the province of Groningen, to a village called Eenrum, where a large year market (locally known as a Braderie) was taking place. Checked that, then had a couple of drinks at the terrace of the local mustard factory, a small operation run from a windmill, then casually strolled through the village some more.
When leaving Eenrum we drove back to Buitenpost to have the infamous local pizza specialty at italian Pizzeria San Marino, right by Café The Point, where chef Salvadori made us the delicious pizzas we've come to love.
Then it was time to take Carnamom home and arrive back at HQ with Chibi on the brink of midnight.
